First, you are very talented at making videos. Don't stop. This is one of the most thorough drz oil change videos. But there were a few mistakes. 1 - Using new crush washers every time is not as important as you say. Many thousands of drz owners, including myself, can attest to that. Yes, it's good practice but most certainly not necessary (assuming it isn't damaged). 2 - There is no reason to remove bolt and hose entirely from the screen's nipple. Only loosen the hose bolt to give play in the hose (and drain a very tiny bit of oil). You can easily remove hose from nipple and replace after cleaning screen without removing hose bolt. 3 - There is an obvious oil drain plug bolt below the oil filter. Drain that first before opening filter cover. This eliminates that big mess you made :P

I appreciate the compliment, and love discussion, so I'm glad you brought this stuff up, I will retort. 1. all true, especially if you use washer style washers, a true crush washer should not be reused. 2. my DRZ is a '03, and the hose is too rigid for me pull off and put back on the nipple without me taking off the banjo bolt assembly, I've tried. 3. I've seen this drain plug housing crack on 3 separate clutch covers, so I don't ever remove the bolt, I'll take the mess over cracked cover. Thanks for the discussion!

You should drain the oil from the filter using the provided drain plug.

If you use aluminum foil to guide the oil where you want it to go there is no mess. I use this technique on all sorts of autos, ATVs and motorcycles. This way the oil does not get in weird places that it shouldn't go.

Thank for the vid. Just bought a used 08 drz on Saturday with 1000 mile. It probably could use an oil change. I'm getting excited about riding around and exploring the central valley.

@@CTGromer PROPER job CTG. Exemplary level of detail and technique all round. Plus, most vloggers don’t know what a torque wrench is, let alone how to use one... Only one tip... get yourself some tight fitting (better ‘feel’) nitrile gloves to stop that used oil from getting on your skin.

Thank you for the tip's on servicing the DRZ 400 as we are looking at used one now ! That's interesting about the Shell 15/40 oil as we use it in about everting else . 👍 Although I'm also looking at a 1979 suzuki RM 400 and kind of on the fence on what bike to go after ? Ride mostly in the dirt .

hi, when checking the oil level does it matter if the bike is stood up or on the side stand?? asking for a mate!! ;o))

Good question, it must be stood up perfectly straight or on a dirt bike stand and on level ground, it will be incorrectly on a side stand.

Three bikes is too many for me just because of physical space, but other than that, heck no! The DRZ is such a great jack of all trades bike. I love mine! I can take it around town, on the freeway, and on single track. It will do it all.

Isn't the screen a 24mm?

That sounds right, I was able to get it with a 15/16s.
@mt1885
@mt1885 3 жыл бұрын
24mm is the size of the oil tank screen and it has a COPPER Crush Washer - Part# 09168-18007 Needs replacing - contact cleaner works great no residue ALL of the COPPER crush washers are 1 time use need to be replaced on the oil lines. Re-using them is asking for trouble and use MOTORCYCLE OIL not Diesel it is not the same as it is NOT made for transmissions muchless high rpms and clutch packs. Plus, it is ALL sorts of additives for SULFUR from DIESEL fuel (but people will never learn).

@@crooney82 If you look up the differences and 1,500 rpm vs 12,000rpm it is cheap for a reason as it is the wrong oil. It has poor lubricating properties as it is the incorrect oil for the motorcycle engines with tight tolerances and 12,000 rpm engines. Do you run diesel oil in a car that requires 0-20 ?? Why not internet said it is in spec?
