Do you drain til empty?

Its the lowest point in the system. If there is water present, it will appear in the first point in the draw. A clear mayonnaise jar or equivalent mason jar is adequate. You don’t have to draw a bucket sample. A clear glass jar is perfect because you will see the water bead up on the bottom. Now if there are gallons of water in your tank (freak case), you will not see separation of the two liquids because its all water. But you will not smell the fuel and the color will not look like diesel fuel. In that case, keep drawing until you don’t see water. And then figure out why there is such a large amount of water in your tank. Perhaps replace the fuel due to contamination.

General question on draining that filter/holder. How much to drop into a jar? On my 8.3 cummins i drained a few ounces once and got maybe 1/2 oz of water. No more since. My 21 350 is new to me @ 16k miles. Havent seen any water pulling like 4 oz @ 1 shot.

Water comes out first, so I think u are draining enough.

Yes, draining the water fuel separator in a Ford F350 diesel on a regular basis, such as monthly, is generally recommended as part of routine maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the engine. The water fuel separator's primary function is to remove water from the diesel fuel, which is crucial because water in the fuel can lead to corrosion, poor engine performance, and even damage to the fuel injection system. ### Reasons for Draining the Water Fuel Separator Regularly 1. **Prevent Water Contamination**: Water can enter the fuel system through condensation or contaminated fuel. Regularly draining the water fuel separator helps to ensure that any accumulated water is removed, preventing it from reaching sensitive engine components. 2. **Maintain Engine Performance**: Water in the fuel can cause misfires, poor fuel combustion, and decreased power output. Keeping the separator drained helps maintain smooth and efficient engine performance. 3. **Avoid Corrosion and Damage**: Water in the fuel system can cause rust and corrosion, particularly in the fuel injectors and other metal components. Regular maintenance helps protect these parts and extend their lifespan. 4. **Reduce Risk of Fuel System Issues**: Allowing water to remain in the fuel system can lead to more severe problems, such as microbial growth, which can clog filters and lines. Regular draining helps mitigate this risk. ### Steps to Drain the Water Fuel Separator 1. **Locate the Separator**: The water fuel separator is typically located near the fuel filter. Refer to the vehicle’s owner’s manual for the exact location and instructions. 2. **Prepare for Draining**: Ensure the engine is off and cool. Place a suitable container underneath the separator to catch the drained water and fuel. 3. **Open the Drain Valve**: Open the drain valve or plug on the separator. Allow the water and any fuel mixed with it to flow out completely. 4. **Close the Valve**: Once the fluid has stopped draining, close the valve securely. 5. **Dispose of the Water and Fuel Properly**: Dispose of the drained water and fuel according to local environmental regulations. 6. **Check for Leaks**: Start the engine and check for any leaks around the separator. Ensure everything is properly sealed. ### Manufacturer Recommendations Always refer to the specific maintenance schedule and recommendations provided in the Ford F350 owner's manual. The manual may specify the exact frequency and procedure for draining the water fuel separator. While monthly draining is a good general practice, the manufacturer's guidelines should take precedence if they suggest a different interval. In summary, regular maintenance, including draining the water fuel separator, is vital for the health of a diesel engine, especially in a Ford F350. Adhering to a consistent maintenance schedule can help prevent issues and ensure the vehicle runs smoothly.

My 2024 F350 owner's manual states "Check every month the fuel and water separator monthly. Drain if necessay or if indicated by the information display." Given what I saw in this video there doesn't appear to be any way to "check" the separator without actually draining it.

One of those steps at the end should include the fuel priming instructions. If you start that engine without priming, I’m sure you’ll have problems. Why wasn’t that added to your instructions?

You need to prime until you don’t hear air. Keep cycling toll the girgle is gone.

12 minutes video just to drain the water from separator? I don't want to disassemble an engine and have it to a video....
