sounds... i think a mechanic can tell the diff in noise between diesel and gasoline; he should; --- sounds is the right word: gas in a running diesel **sounds** WAY different, it knock, after the diesel in the filters and lines gets consumed and the gasoline gets to those pistons....can't miss it yeah, seen that a few times, you SAVE the engine and the injection system IF you shut it off right away when the big knocking appears (is your radio off '? LOL) and have it towed, but few do that, most toast the engine; that is one the reasons why most pumps (All of them in Europe) went to self-service.

As a former fuel transport driver for a major North American truck stop, the likelihood of mixed product is virtually impossible. Each underground storage tank fill hole has a colored lid (Red-White-Blue for various gasoline grades, and Yellow-Green for Diesel Fuel). Not only are the lids color coded, but underneath that lid inside the hole is a locking rain cap with padlock on the fill tube, and nearby a brass tag that identifies the product inside that tank. The locking rain cap prevents flood waters from entering the underground storage tanks should the ground area above become flooded. Anyhow with all this redundancy, it is very unlikely a transport driver would mix product. In major truck stops the location of the diesel fuel and gasoline drop points are in two different locations so that there is no confusion. I will assume small gas stations are built the same way. It is very common for consumers to put gasoline in a diesel tank, however it is impossible for them to put diesel in a gasoline tank as the fill nozzle spout will not fit the opening. At the retail pumps, all grade gasoline use a single nozzle with a small spout with a black cover over the handle with grade selection on the pump. The diesel nozzle has a green (or sometimes yellow) cover over the handle and the spout is much larger so that it will not fit in the fill opening of gasoline vehicles. If this customer placed gasoline in a diesel vehicle, their loss and an expensive one.

Those have to have been made of strong metal orherwise it wouldn't be able withstand 1000psi+ injection pressures while lasting 250k miles or more. The real problem here is operator error. You might get lucky if the engine hasn't been running on that gasoline /diesel mixture for long. Also, the less gasoline in the tank, the bigger the chance that the pump and injectors have survived.

I once accidentally put unleaded into my diesel Mazda 626 years ago... at the time I had 2 cars, the other was petrol and I was in that early-morning haze. Luckily the tank was almost empty, I realised when I had only put a half gallon in, so I stopped, paid for it, then filled the tank with diesel. I then drove it away, and treated the car gently until the next fill-up. The amount of petrol wasn't enough to cause problems. Made me pay more attention in the future.... :D

Being in the gasoline business for 30 years. I've seen the transport drivers put fuel in the wrong storage tanks at the gas station many times. It's possible the driver dumped unleaded in the diesel tank in this case. The customer should go back to the location he filled up at and see if others have complained. Most of the time the transport company will cover the cost of repairs. If the customer used a credit card when they filled up. Their receipt should indicate which pump they used while filling up. Some receipts show the type of fuel, but the price they paid per gallon should be enough to tell if they were on a diesel pump or not.

What happens when running gas through a diesel system is that it will wear the pumps and injectors. Diesel injectors have extremely tight tolerances and the diesel fuel works as a lubricant and cooling. How much damage depends on how much gas is in the system, the fact that it runs at all gives hope that draining the system and refilling with diesel will fix the problem. The lift pump is making noise because it is pumping thinner fluid than designed for. The service life of the injectors and high pressure pump may have been compromised by the lower lubrication of the gas/diesel mix, but they are a lot tougher than you think. Before you tell me I don't know shit, I have been a diesel mechanic for 50 years.

My Dad owned two early 70s Volvo diesels, both station wagons. They were comfortable and good looking, both Sky Blue. The first went down after being heavily T-boned at a controlled intersection. The second was sold after it started needing $1500 in repairs every four-to-six weeks, and the one Volvo mechanic in town always had a large backlog of work. It doubled as a daily driver and his delivery vehicle for small print jobs, and Dad needed a more reliable vehicle, with lower cost of upkeep. I've never been able to understand the diesel owners who keep their engines running, idling for 30+ minutes at a time in the Texas summer heat, stinking up the area. Those Volvos started right up every time, with only a short glow plug wait in the coldest weather.

Have a 40 yr old Miller welder powered by a Waukesha 4-cyl diesel. Brought home fuel once not long after getting it & didn't register for a few minutes why it was running lousy. I had poured ~5gal of gas into a tank that had maybe 2+ gal of diesel left. Thought I had used the diesel pump & failed to notice the lack of green-tinge when filling welder. This was well before my DD became a diesel too which cemented the habit of grabbing the green handle by default. FORTUNATELY didn't appear to be any permanent damage as it went back to normal after draining as much of the fuel as possible then refilling with fresh 5 gallons of diesel + new filter. Later down the road I had to pull the DB style rotary as it was fouling...between diesel algae growth & whatever the gas managed to break loose & left behind. Purely mechanical systems can be more forgiving at least as long as you catch it fairly quick.

I work as diesel tech at ambulance Co. and very common they put gas in 2018 and older ram cummins or 7.3 powerstroke when they hire new drivers . I usually just drain tank, blow out all fuel lines from tank to injector, fill new fuel filter with atf or diesel fuel conditioner and usually no issues . But we're talking about 2018 and older cummins cp3 pumps and 7.3 heui system that are more resilient to contaminants.

Just a few years back, I filled up with petrol in my girlfriend's small Peugeot 4-cylinder diesel on a Monday morning - my car was a petrol engine. Realised after about 20 miles when it started to 'cough'. It cost about $700 to drain and pressurize the system and no other damage.

In the UK some filling stations use yellow hoses for both diesel and E5/98+ Ron and green hoses for the cheaper E10/95 Ron, My mate filled his CBR600 Fire-blade with diesel. Luckily it was on carbs. so, some fresh fuel and me blowing an airline from a foot away to force feed it solved the problem, (Lots of black smoke followed by some mega flames) I now find myself screaming at random bikers in fuel stations like a loony, But I've saved a few others from the same fate.

Great video. I started a diesel fuel refill at a station and the flow rate was extremely low at the pump. The color of the fuel was too clear for diesel. I stopped fueling at less than a gallon and rolled on. May have dodged a bullet that day. Attendant said they just received a new supply of diesel.

Lift pump is not bad drain all the gas and refill with diesel. Gas is thinner then diesel and the pump has trouble picking up the thinner fuel hence the noise coming from the lift pump and delayed start. More than likely it did not damage the high pressure pump (Cp4) but could do to the fact gas has no lubrications (oil). I have seen many people do this with no future troubles.

Wow, once I owned a 1979 Mercedes 300D and I could not imagine making that mistake. Driving the car, I always knew where the filling stations were that sold diesel, especially the ones with a fair price. The previous owner, my older brother, told me that an attended filled it up with gasoline by mistake but he caught the error once he got the receipt; close call.

We've seen this before at work, if you're *lucky* you can turn it around by changing any faulty components and priming the system with fresh diesel. The worst part is that you might fix it and send it away running fine only for it to gradually crap out over time as the high pressure components start to fail from premature wear. This is another example of why people should just own up to their mistakes when they make them. It could be the difference in cost between a tank of fuel and a new set of filters and replacing every part of the fuel system. Don't be an idiot folks, if you do something stupid, and we all do stupid from time to time, like putting gas in your diesel vehicle then call a tow truck and get it drained and taken care of - *don't* try to run the engine!

This is why you should install a fuel disaster prevention kit like from S&S. Get a CP4 failure and you’ll get this repair bill too. Change the fuel filters every 10k. You need to cycle the fuel pump to purge the air after doing the filter at the tank and then again after the engine filter change BEFORE trying to start the engine.

my first thought with the long start and misfires on all the cylinders was the dreaded DEF in the diesel tank. that stuff is nasty in a fuel system. you have to basically replace lines and all or you'll get DEF sluffing off any component left after you get it running again.oh and Ford is going to laugh him out of the office when he ask for a warranty!

The stuff draining out of the primary filter looks a lot like gasoline to me. Das gonna be an expensive repair. Been there done that. I stopped at a gas station on the way to Texas one time to fill up my truck. Went up to the diesel pump. Pumped it up. Made it about 10 mi after and it just started misfiring and then it wouldn't even start. Turns out the gas station had accidentally filled the diesel tank with unleaded.
