What Nog didn't realize then was that Martok just gave him a lesson in leadership. Courage is good, bravery is good, but choose your battles wisely. If Nog didn't admit his stupidity along with his bravery, Martok would have wiped the floor with him, and that is what he respected.

I love how they portray him as a Klingon. People often believe Klingons have only respect for strong warriors and that strength is the most important trait in Klingon society. But actually it is courage. It does not matter that you are not the strongest or most skilled warrior, it is more important that you face challenges with courage.

Better than that my friend. Just watched that final scene back and Martok doesn't notice when he almost bumps into nog. Nog doesn't move and when Martok does notice Martok actually adresses Nog first not the other way around. It might not be much but it says so much more that Martok wasn't just answering back out of respect but in fact held Nog to the same level of respect that he would want to be respected by addressing him first.

Nog learned a lesson that when dealing with other cultures you have to meet them on their own ground to make any connections. Martok and Nog both new that in a fight Martok could end him in 2 seconds. The fact that Nog stood up anyway is why the general was impressed. Such fine writing and acting.

Martok was truly an honorable Klingon. Many Klingon's, maybe most, would have dismissed him, or worse. Martok weighed all of Nog's traits and capabilities, and treated him honorably, not because Nog could demand it in a fight against him, but because he stood up to Martok and earned honor despite the fact he couldn't. Few of all of the Klingons ever shown on the show were truly honorable, and most of the few that were pale in comparison to Martok.

I once was at a convention and "Rom and Nog" were there. While there were other "bigger name" Star Trek actors at the same panel (such as William Shatner and LeVar Burton (Geordie La Forge), Rom and Nog were the ones that came out dressed as their characters, and stayed in character throughout the panel. They were in my opinion the most entertaining and interesting of all the panel guests there. They were so much fun to watch and it is such a lovely memory. I'm glad I was able to be there and see them. I never kept up with Deep Space Nine, because at the time that it aired I was a teenage girl just starting her first job, and I just happened to always be working at the time Deep Space Nine aired. At the time I only knew that Rom and Nog were on Deep Space Nine and that was all I knew of the characters. Now, decades later as a 40 year old woman I'm just now starting to watch Deep Space 9 for the first time. I am heart broken that this wonderful man I saw at the panel, Aron Eisenberg, has passed on. Never again will I see him in person, but I will see him at his best, playing the role and character that he loved, in this fan-loved Star Trek series that till now I have missed out on. Rest in peace Aron, you will be missed, but your legacy will live on.

I was on Deep Space Nine once, speaking with some of my officers on the Promenade, when a Ferengi ensign interrupted and tried to hurry us away. It was a surprise, but even greater was my surprise that the ensign stood his ground- and even threatened to arrest us, though he knew that he could not defeat any of us, had we defied him. Seeing this, I instructed my crew that we would indeed move along. The Ferengi worship money, their dead are revered for earning profit. Well, I know little of their 'Divine Treasury'... but I know that bravery is a coin that cannot be purchased even with latinum, and in that the Lieutenant was among the wealthiest of his kind." -Chancellor Martok of the Klingon Empire, statement to the Federation News Service on the passing of Lt. What Nog realised and Martok acknowledged in this scene is a sentiment I first heard expressed in a "story within a story." A person playing a character in a Role Playing Game says, in-character, "you only have the right to that which you are willing to defend." Note that the key phrase here is "willing to defend" and not "capable of defending." Nog was willing and Martok gave in not because he had to, but because he respected that willingness and the bravery behind it.

Nog had lobes of solid latinum to stand up to Martok like that. Martok himself was impressed because Nog earned his respect by being straightforward and no-nonsense about his duties nut handled it with honor and respect. I think after that, Martok came to have great respect for the young cadet who would one day become a damn fine officer. Nog even earned Sisko's respect and admiration. DS9 was the most three-dimensional of all the Trek series at the time. When it began, Nog was a troubled kid and Jake was a scared and confused child who'd just lost his mother. Over the years the stories targeted them and all the major characters and even a few minor ones. Nog became an exemplary Starfleet officer and Jake became a respected writer and journalist. The show's writing was solid and despite the obvious sci-fi, some of the stories could have taken place in our world and in our time, especially the ones that dealt with political intrigue, which is what drew me to the show. Best damn Trek series for me.

"...despite the obvious sci-fi, some of the stories could have taken place in our world and in our time..." But that's true in so many cases. This show had an excellent supporting cast- very rarely have I ever seen a recurring cast that all feel like staples. Nog, Martok, Garak, Rom, Ross, Vic, and even the villains like Dukat, Weyoun, Kai Winn, the Female Changeling, Damar and Brunt really made this show feel fleshed out. I love how the side characters can have entertaining side plots that can be enjoyable to anyone

One of the marks of a truly great show is that you don't really care what characters from it are going to be in that week's episode. It might even be two background characters you don't care all that much about, but you're intrigued by what kind of chemistry might result, or what kind of unexpected situation they might find themselves in. The only other show I felt it as much in was Adventure Time, and while that's a totally different animal, it's the only other example I can think of.

Martok was a very wise Klingon who would fight only if the enemy is really aggressive and rival. Honor wasn`t just a word for him, unlike many other Klingons who would attack Nog with a knife without hesitating. Also I know it would be near impossible but still I imagine what would happen to house of Martok if Ferengi dude placed Counselor under arrest, and there will be news spread all over the quadrant

I don't know why Deep Space 9 and Enterprise got such a bad review from everyone in the day, but they both had some excellent characters and wonderful stories/plots. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of both. Nog and Garak had to be some of the most dynamic characters on DS9, not to mention Archer,Tripp, and T'pal. I sure would like for the writers on the new stuff to do a better job of research when writing a new episode for their series.
