What Nog didn't realize then was that Martok just gave him a lesson in leadership. Courage is good, bravery is good, but choose your battles wisely. If Nog didn't admit his stupidity along with his bravery, Martok would have wiped the floor with him, and that is what he respected.

Martok was truly an honorable Klingon. Many Klingon's, maybe most, would have dismissed him, or worse. Martok weighed all of Nog's traits and capabilities, and treated him honorably, not because Nog could demand it in a fight against him, but because he stood up to Martok and earned honor despite the fact he couldn't. I once was at a convention and "Rom and Nog" were there. While there were other "bigger name" Star Trek actors at the same panel (such as William Shatner and LeVar Burton (Geordie La Forge), Rom and Nog were the ones that came out dressed as their characters, and stayed in character throughout the panel. They were in my opinion the most entertaining and interesting of all the panel guests there. They were so much fun to watch and it is such a lovely memory. I'm glad I was able to be there and see them. I never kept up with Deep Space Nine, because at the time that it aired I was a teenage girl just starting her first job, and I just happened to always be working at the time Deep Space Nine aired. At the time I only knew that Rom and Nog were on Deep Space Nine and that was all I knew of the characters. Now, decades later as a 40 year old woman I'm just now starting to watch Deep Space 9 for the first time. I am heart broken that this wonderful man I saw at the panel, Aron Eisenberg, has passed on. Never again will I see him in person, but I will see him at his best, playing the role and character that he loved, in this fan-loved Star Trek series that till now I have missed out on. Nog had lobes of solid latinum to stand up to Martok like that. Martok himself was impressed because Nog earned his respect by being straightforward and no-nonsense about his duties nut handled it with honor and respect. I think after that, Martok came to have great respect for the young cadet who would one day become a damn fine officer. Nog even earned Sisko's respect and admiration. DS9 was the most three-dimensional of all the Trek series at the time. When it began, Nog was a troubled kid and Jake was a scared and confused child who'd just lost his mother. Over the years the stories targeted them and all the major characters and even a few minor ones. Nog became an exemplary Starfleet officer and Jake became a respected writer and journalist. The show's writing was solid and despite the obvious sci-fi, some of the stories could have taken place in our world and in our time, especially the ones that dealt with political intrigue, which is what drew me to the show. Best damn Trek series for me.

One of the marks of a truly great show is that you don't really care what characters from it are going to be in that week's episode. ...Ok, I've been a fan of this series for years... How did I just catch the "Don't tempt fate" while Martok's pointing at his missing eye, i.e. "this could happen to you," and not make the connection to Nog's later losing his leg in the siege at AR 558?! Seriously, I love this series!

I love how reluctantly impressed Martok is by Nog's tenacity. It's like he's thinking there's a bit of a Klingon in him.

It reminds me a lot of when Quark was in the Great Hall and he dropped his sword on the ground and stated ( paraphrasing) " this was never going to be fight it is an execution so that's what you'll have to do. and when you tell your grandchildren of the Glorious story how you took This Woman's house from her, remember to tell them you did it by murdering an unarmed Ferengi half your size" Chancellor Gowron then stopped the guy found him guilty and look down at Quark " a brave Ferengi, who would have thought it possible" Gowron respected Quark for the balls he showed that were half bravery and possibly half stupidity LOL kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHalcpmMd8Sie7s

I always liked Martok for this. It's such a little thing, and could have easily fallen into a klingon trope where they laugh at him and ignore him.

The acting is so epic....especially Martok. He understands "good" when he sees it. I love how he moves the group away at Nog's request in the end. Like...the crap man....Martok's seen cra shit compared to Nog...and for Martok to react like that is epic...and a reflection of his character...no matter his rank.

Martok was a very wise Klingon who would fight only if the enemy is really aggressive and rival. Honor wasn`t just a word for him, unlike many other Klingons who would attack Nog with a knife without hesitating. Also I know it would be near impossible but still I imagine what would happen to house of Martok if Ferengi dude placed Counselor under arrest, and there will be news spread all over the quadrant

For me, one of the most memorable vignettes of the entire series. This scene, together with a subsequent one where Martok now acknowledges Nog as they cross paths near a turbo lift.

Martok knew exactly what he was doing here....he was guaging Nog's heart and courage....he knows he could break him without breaking a sweat, but basically told his guys "you know what, this kids got guts, gotta hand it to him...let's go get a drink at the bar."

I don't know why Deep Space 9 and Enterprise got such a bad review from everyone in the day, but they both had some excellent characters and wonderful stories/plots. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of both. Nog and Garak had to be some of the most dynamic characters on DS9, not to mention Archer,Tripp, and T'pal. I sure would like for the writers on the new stuff to do a better job of research when writing a new episode for their series.

Nog has balls of solid rock. A 5'0"+ Ferengi facing a 6'5"+ Klingon . Nog evolved wonderfully during DS-9's run, serious & dedicated. He has his father's knack for engineering. I would be proud to have him serve on my ship if I were captain 🌌🚀👽👍

Nog here brings back memories of an episode I well remember from 8th grade when I noticed three thugs of 17 or older standing near my favorite tyre swing. Remembering this very DS9 scene I went right over there and suggested they were standing there just to insult me. Fortunately, I landed on a nest of tables stacked outside the Dunkin' Donuts cabin which broke my fall.
