Hello Dave and Nige, from an old spark from the 60's. I just love your long fault finding video's Dave, I was totally engrossed again, you must be a genius being able use a new piece of test gear with all those sub menu's straight out of the box. as for powering up for fireworks display, sometimes it's the only way to pin-point a fault, in the old days we had very little test gear only a wind-up Megger and neon screw driver, but I think you did extremely well to find all those hidden JB's and the faulty cable, well done, your top man as far as I'm concerned. Peter.
@peterrobinson8503 жыл бұрын
Dave, just replying to myself, I wonder if you could just correct me if I'm wrong, when you was doing calculation of the 5.5 metres of 2.5 should it have been 19.51 rather than 7.41 milli ohms per metre, I couldn't see too well what you was measuring (R1+R2), not being critical just curious if I've got my facts wrong. Peter.
@dsesuk3 жыл бұрын
@@peterrobinson850 Well spotted Peter. Ironically, I didn't have my On-Site Guide on site and I pulled the number from memory, but you're right, it's 19.51 for 2.5/1.5 and it was an R1+R2 we were doing. I also cocked up the decimal point by entering it as 741 milliohm instead of 7.41 which is why the number returned was close to what the tester reported. I'll have to pin this as there's not enough characters left in the description to issue an erratum!

Well they do say that when something blows up you know what the fault is lol. We had a lot of failures at work where we found that bypass capacitors on boards have gone short circuit but they were visually ok so trying to find out what was pulling the rail down was a right bastard lol. If there was a nice shit stain on the board you'd spot it in seconds lol.

Excellent video as always guys. Great to see a common sense approach. Back in the olden days when I was an electrician we did a lot of live testing and no sophisticated test equipment. We did have windup meggers and a lightbulb with a couple of croc clips to test for power! It does seem though that even today the industry appears unregulated and evryone and his mother are doing wiring jobs. I would stress that if getting any electrical work done the best way is by recommendation. A friend of mine who runs a charity shop recently employed a PAT guy and it appears he got his qualification via a 30 min internet course! he got an impressive certificate and a bunch of labels but after meeting him I wasn't sure he could tie his shoelaces.

I didn't expect to watch the whole sodding video, but it was time well-spent. One factor which you might have omitted from your risk assessment when repeatedly energising the faulty cable, is the chance of a fire starting within the wall. I'd have watched for another hour if that had happened.
@dsesuk3 жыл бұрын
We'd have diligently filmed the fire brigade putting it out for you. I think in this case, the sparky stuff was down to just how wet through that cabling was. Had things been drier, combustion may have been more likely, but then without the water it may have clicked on and stayed stable without any fizzing at all.
@TheChipmunk20083 жыл бұрын
Bang testing can be valid if you know what you're doing. My only addition would be, after testing, change the breaker. because repeatedly closing it on a fault can damage it. We found one on a ring final.... because bob the wan...err builder had wired an outside light 'lantern', upside down, onto the ring. Upside down filled the E27 holder with water, and the thud was audible from the livingroom... so i had colleague keep turning the breaker back on. I may have had him energize it twice more just for the really cool flash up the side of the lamp, after i'd located it ;)

Not much you can do with Class II - you'll have a transformer brick I suspect, the LED string then being ELV. A visual test of the brick is about as much as you can do, although you could IR test the plastic case if you really wanted to waste your time. When we're asked to PAT things like phone chargers or other such 'wall warts', the visual inspection is about as much as we do. If it has a DC jack with enough metal on it, you could IR it with the clip on the metalwork, but it would have to be pretty cocked-up internally to fail that test!

@@dsesuk Hi David. Another great video ( as always ) About metrel, would You recommend it ? I need to replace my old Unitest and looking at Mi 3152 and TIS MFT - Pro. Which one would You pick between two ?

Plot twist they didn't survive, they just don't know it yet but it doesn't matter they continue to do good work?

Great video Chaps, a wonderful feature-length presentation full of suspense & good old logical fault finding, it made my day. Thanks for all the hard work that goes into these videos they are very much appreciated. I have never seen such a lash-up by some brainless bathroom fitter presumably & what do they think the CPC wire is ?

⚠️ Use wago connectors on bare wire ends when testing 👍😁 I think it was a wire to an old wall / mirror light.

Could have been. I'm thinking though that because we had to break out the fan liner to get to it, chances are it's been there since the bathroom was fitted and never did serve any purpose. Something perhaps that was put in for future use and then forgotten about?

This was excellent, even just for the amateur dramatics.
