The first couple recordings are used to think it was the battery that was imposing this limit. I’m doing this for KZbin so I guess this forces me not to over record but the truth is I typically will sit there and record 2 to 3 different intros and Altro‘s so that when I go to the editing portion I’m not realizing that the footage was bad and then going back and trying to set up and re-record parts.

I have a Canon Rebel T6 and my camera will only record clips around 12 minutes opposed to 30. My first assumption was my card is too small, but after doing some research, any class 10 card (which is what I have) should have no issue recording for 30 minutes of length, I then tried to re-format my card which also didn't help. Now i can't figure out why I cant get my recording to last 30 minutes. I'd love some guidance if you have any.

Magic lantern doesnt remove the limit, it only restarts it automatically after the limit has been hit within about 1 sec. There are other ways like using an intervalometer and setting ur shutter button as the record button in custom button settings, and setting the intervalometer to 29:59 or like 30 minutes to hit the shutter button and it will automatically restart video recording at that time. There are several videos on it, watch it to make sure I didnt say wrong time. Last but not least, that whole tax reason is bs, as cameras are built differently for different markets to begin with, and software / firmware are different in different markets also. From a coding perspective this is a non issue, as Let's say canon for instance has cameras that are only meant for canon usa market and vice versa for many other markets. Hence the reason for grey market cameras that are actually built by canon but often not to the same specs or different parts used for some foreign markets like with the 5d mark iv, and same thing for lenses, is it a quality difference I dont know. But electronics built with different features in different markets are nothing new, like dvd players etc... There is a limit because they figure it cuts into there camcorder or video recorder business model by letting u record infinite amount of time same as one of those devices from a device which is designed primarily for photos.
@CamberFilmSchool3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the clarification.
@ylliimeri2 жыл бұрын
Magic Lantern doesn’t have a record limit. I have recorded 31 minutes one time with my 5D mark III and there was no cut at the 29:59 timestamp. It was all continuous, no 1 sec in between. It stopped at 31:20 only because I ran out of storage.

Absolutely, I was using a Canon 5 during an event when I realized that it was always stopping everyone and a while. Magic Lantern "can void warranty" is a bit misleading because it doesn't change the machine it's self. It runs off the the memory card. Some variations have been known to brick your camera but just moving the SD card will get rid of the infringing software and boom your warranty can't be proven to be voided. (My background is in software development and physical systems testing... wheres that degree now lol) I rock the BMPCC4k now no problem since, couldn't recommend that camera any more... haha pretty much a blackmagic fan boy at this point.

One of the biggest reasons I chose my Lumix G85 was because it could record continuously as long as I had power and memory. It does chop up the files in 4GB chunks, but they are easily combinable in Premiere. Since I was doing some concert recordings, I needed that continuous feature. One day I would love to upgrade to a Canon or Nikon, but I won't as long as they continue to put that silly artificial time limit on there. Hopefully it's true that the tax will go away one day. I have a Canon EOS 4000D. It stops recording after about 12 minutes. This is the first I've heard of built-in recording limits. My online research led me to the conclusion that my SD cards weren't fast enough. I've upgraded the card a couple of times. I'm currently using a ProGrade 128GB, with 250MB/s read and 120MB/S write times. That hasn't helped. Neither does lowering the resolution of the recording. I'm very frustrated over this. I'm pretty tech savvy, but new to DSLRs and not sure how to proceed.
@CamberFilmSchool2 жыл бұрын
That’s because a lot of entry level DSLRs also have a max GB recording limit that corresponds to around 10-12 minutes when in FHD. Unfortunately Canon keeps plaguing their cameras with these video limits. Sony and Panasonic have done away with them for the past couple years.

This artificial limit ruined some of my events that I wanted recorded. It was all volunteer work, so I didn't lose any money on this, right? Wrong. I put down thousands of bucks to record events (basketball games, musical dramas, and Boy Scout events like Pinewood Derby). It's very frustrating to splurge on this equipment only to have a British Import Tax artificially limit my equipment purchased in America. Thank you for providing a way to get around it with an external monitor/recording device. Hopefully that'll help.

How I found out about this limit through producing comedy as a service to my performers I use my Canon Rebel SL3 to record their sets, which since it's a show I produce and use my own equipment for I give them for free. I thought if I just pressed record and left it, I could focus on hosting and front of house stuff. Luckily around the 30 min mark I checked the camera, saw the message and pressed record again in a panic. Now the problem specifically in this case is that when comedians are sending their tapes to Bookers for local shows and clubs, it is a requirement the footage is uncut, edited, or manipulated. To ensure laughter isn't being canned or they haven't removed a joke from their set that didn't land. So now this comedian who I had to re-press record for can only use half of his 10 minute set to send to Bookers. Which especially sucks if they had any call backs riffs or were in the middle of a setup.
@CamberFilmSchool Жыл бұрын
Yea, that’s a definite downside to using cameras with the limit. That’s why I always recommend people test their gear before using it for productions.

Yeah, it is a pain. But the external recorders are pretty expensive so you may be better off just selling what you have and getting something like a Sony a6100.

My current Nikon B700 only does 13 minutes and 59 seconds… but I RARELY record over that so this is an upgrade. Thankfully it allows me to just press the button again.

Thank you I learned some new things from your video I have a Nikon DSLR 3100 and it records for 10 minutes. I'm looking for a way to record at least half an hour or even longer if possible
@CamberFilmSchool4 жыл бұрын
A lot of older DSLR cameras have shorter limits because they were designed with video just being an added extra rather than a serious part of the camera. So there are some limits you just won’t be able to get past with older cameras.

I’m currently looking for a camera! I’m tired of using my phone, I’m just starting out on KZbin and so far I’m loving making content! Would anybody recommend this camera for beginners or others? I watched the video, just looking for other options! This video helped clarify what I DID NOT know about this camera too! Thank you!

I don’t have that issue anymore on the Panasonic LUMIX GH6. That’s a thing of the past. Overheating was another problem I had with the Sony when shooting videos. That’s gone with the Panasonic LUMIX GH6 too. I’m just shooting kick ass workouts longer than 20 minutes now.

With the GX80/GX85 being the same camera but for different geographical regions Panasonic were able to drop the limit on 4k on the GX85 as that was for the US market, whilst the GX80 was for the EU market and had the limit on it. They were also able to seperate the firmware so that you couldn't install the GX85 onto the GX80. This market split also meant that frame rates were limited according to the regions - the GX80 could do 25fps only but the GX85 was 30fps only - despite the fact that frame rate wasn't an issue with the tax.

I learned this the hard way, after buying a Lumix DC-FZ1000 mark2 - exactly like you described; on its maiden voyage I had to apologise to everyone that it hasn’t recorded, like it was my fault! I’m like wtf, cameras classified as video cameras cost more? The only difference being that video cameras are less capable at taking still images, you’re paying more for less functionality??

Yea, that’s one of the worst ways to find out!

I'm a noob but my daughter graduated with a degree in cinematography so when I decided to move from taking pictures of my retail store items with my cell phone and move up a bit in the world, she recommended the Cannon M50 MII perfect for that and blogs, youtube videos, etc but even she was unaware of why there was a limit on my camera of 30 minutes recording time when I just bought a 512GB card. You explained it very well and answered by the question but why we in the USA are restricted by an EU restriction if I understand you correctly "is lame"! Damn, I thought I was upgrading only to find my cell phone records longer? I usually run several recording devices around me simultaneously for B-Roll film for my KZbin channel and this just sucks! But thank you, I was wondering if I got scammed by the company who made my SIM card thinking they were faking the actual size of memory in it. Mystery solved!
@CamberFilmSchool2 жыл бұрын
Yea. Unfortunately the Canon M50 m2 is a pretty bad camera when it comes to video. Aside from the 30 minute limit, autofocus is absolutely terrible when using 4K because of the huge crop added when in that mode. Something like the Sony ZV-E10 or a6100 both hand NO crop in 4K with great autofocus in ALL modes plus no recording limits.
@PatriotCoinRings2 жыл бұрын
@@CamberFilmSchool Sucks for me. I knew nothing of them and it was the one my daughter suggested for me as a beginner. I've already learned 4k is almost pointless on this camera as you said and that 30k may be the breaking point of my selling it to start over again.
@CamberFilmSchool2 жыл бұрын
I’d go with selling it because there really aren’t many good lenses for that camera either without having to use adapters.

Only thing I’m aware of is an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja. But it’s probably be cheaper and easier to use to just get a newer camera that doesn’t have the limits.
