DSLR Webcam vs Logitech c920: What's Best For Your Streaming Content? 👀

The DSLR (actually, it's a mirrorless camera!) image has a definite color cast as compared to the webcam. I suppose this could be corrected for, but really, I was not convinced by the video in this presentation that buying into a DSLR or mirrorless system is worth the investment UNLESS you also plan to use the camera for other things. One might also consider that for casual users of webcam technology, setting up the DSLR apparatus each time takes time and effort compared to a webcam, which you clip onto the monitor and away you go.

The logitech looks great when the lighting is prioritized. Stressing a $80 webcam and comparing it to a mirrorless camera, which is purposefully designed to compensate for low light and focus, isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison. I don't believe one positive thing was said about the cheaper alternative. Didn't even mention the specs required to run a camlink to your PC or Laptop. Quad core and I7 is the minimum which many console players may not have because there may not be a need for a new laptop or PC. The webcam is perfect for this scenario.

Hey @Alec/ @Preacher - do you mind please elaborating about the bandwidth that Camlink / USB from camera takes up? I’ve been using a DSLR setup but my video and audio sync has been an issue + the image quality DURING a stream which I suspect is the case (told my CPU is extremely overwhelmed by Restream.Io) - had looked into upgrading to a MacBook M1 Chip but lo and behold Canon Webcam Utility is not compatible with Big Sur! What a dilemma! If you were me what would you do? Downgrade to a Webcam? Upgrade to PC? Would love to know what device you’re using to stream from Preacher! (Non gaming needed in my case) Appreciate the advice!

@@SarahChenGlobal a few questions: what is the current specs of your pc/laptop? Are you using streamlabs obs or obs studio? What is your bitrate and overall internet connection looking like? Would need a bit more info to help (if I can).

@@ajs6036 so appreciate it! (and sorry for trolling Preacher but I'm pretty desperate since no one from Apple/Restream are "experts" on the full setup! "I can't advice you beyond our products..) current specs is 1.6GHZ Intel Core, 8GB, Mojave Version 11, bit rate, is 2946 kbps, internet via Ethernet looks good. Using Restream only (is that terrible?) - UI pretty good so for a non-techie, appreciate that. I did run a test with Apple support that showed it took up 91% of my CPU, though.

@@SarahChenGlobal yes your issue is probably stemming from your CPU not being powerful enough to encode the image/video coming from the camlink through the software you’re using. The minimum requirements of using the camlink is having a quad core processor. Your 1.6ghz is about 2 cores, half the cores needed to properly use the device. Upgrading to the M1 chip would likely fix your issue, but, if you’re not fully committed to apple and Mac OS, I’d highly recommend upgrading to a desktop pc, more bang for your buck and much more powerful than a MacBook. Totally up to you though. Before you buy the m1 MacBook make sure it has at least 4 cores but I’m sure they’re pushing 8 cores with that chip which should be plenty for what you’re working on. Also, if you’re using restream to stream on several different platforms at once you may want to stick with it, but, if you’re only streaming to 1 platform, you should give OBS studio a try. It may be intimidating at first but it relieves a lot of strain on your CPU and is optimized for complete efficiency. Before buying the m1 MacBook id give this software a shot it might work for you since you’re not gaming and don’t need AS much CPU power.

What about mics? Some people use fancy cute mics that they hold in their hands, some people had standalone mics that were fixated on the surface What about not just a separate mic at all? Like using your laptop's mic or a Bluetooth airbuds mic? Or a usb camera's mic

This is a bet of pedantry, but the A5100 isn't a DSLR, it's a mirrorless camera.

You're exactly right. It can't be a Digital Single Lens REFLEX if it doesn't have a mirror.

Thanks, I have a Mirorrles and was thinking about going for a webcam, for the mirrorless, I just need to consider a power adaptor ( a dummy battery ) for my sony a7ii so that I can make it into a webcam. Great points on the end by the way.

What's the deal with those massive mic and arm setups? It's bizarre that people are so concerned about visual quality that they don't realize the goofiness of how those massive mic and flex arms present? Or do they think they add some sort of "pro" look to the video. Why not just get a cheap lav and get the hardware out of the frame? Or get a C-stand and a short shotgun and get the hardware our of the frame. As it is, all these arms and massive mics look like the ultimate boys with toys mentality.
