While this movie played fast and loose with history, the thing about it that was so good is that it always felt correct and real. The people who made it really must have a love for racing in addition to filmmaking. The only thing that really ever struck me as off was that all the dash gauges in the cars were shown mounted the 'right way' they would be in a passenger car, whereas so many old race cars I've seen have the gauges turned so that the needle is at the 12 o'clock position when they are either at the limit or their sweet spot or whatever to make it easier on the driver.
@terrylessmann22742 жыл бұрын
Funny how in Hollywood, the driver ALWAYS has a gear in reserve, just waiting to pass the competition at the last moment. And funny how the shift always sounds like a bolt action rifle.
@tanall59592 жыл бұрын
In this case it actually made at least some sense though. As Miles was sandbagging to ostensibly save the engine, he likely wasn't using the full gearbox when he could. And in the last straight he was trying to push the engine to the edge of the power band before shifting to get as much out of the gear as he could, and also get as far as possible into the next gear's power band when he shifted.

@dsnitris20072 жыл бұрын
Leo Beebe was in real life very supportive of Miles and Shelby. The movie completely made up the conflict. His family was understandably very upset about the portrayal. As for the finish, I've heard many different versions of how it came about. One version says it was Henry Ford, another says it was Bruce McLaren (who was leading, not Miles) and another that says it was Miles himself. Everyone's dead now, so who knows. The Ford contingent did order their drivers to slow down for the last hour of the race, because McLaren and Miles were racing each other, and the last thing Ford wanted was for them to blow up or crash out before the 1-2-3 finish that they had in the bag.
@bbb462cid2 жыл бұрын
@@dsnitris2007 Yes, to make a good film there needs to be conflict and resolution. That is why films get made "based on a true story". Even very realistic portrayals get tweaked for conversational flow and to help the audience get the message of a scene.

@@dsnitris2007 now that is just messed up! It feels like they did steal it from miles, even to have first and second if he had blown up, while breaking his own records. I do now feel guilty they made up the conflict like that, especially for the "based on a true story" aspect of the film.

They really played fast and loose with the facts to create "drama." Miles wasn't left in the US for Le Mans in 1965. He shared one of the 7 liter cars with Bruce McLaren. No surprise he was there, since he had co-driven the winning car at a 2000km race at Daytona and won the prototype class (2nd overall to Jim Hall's Chaparral) at Sebring. There was no dramatic comeback at Daytona in 1966; Miles and Lloyd Ruby led for the last 20+ hours of the race and won by 8 laps over another Shelby car driven by Dan Gurney and Jerry Grant.
@dsnitris20072 жыл бұрын
Anyone looking to Hollywood movies for an accurate portrayal of history is on a fool's errand. To me it doesn't seem like they do in this one. Many times we see them shifting they are going down for a overtake as they get more horsepower at higher RPM leading to faster overtakes so when they are basically cruising they use a higher gear so the engine doesn't explode but then they go down for corners and overtakes and immediately go back to save the engine.

This is a great homage to the golden age of racing. No traction control, no ABS, and no automatic gearboxes. Just the machine and the driver's skill/determination. While modern day dual clutch automatics may perform better, it takes away a huge portion of racing which was driver skill. Anyone can get into an automatic car and make it go fast. Only true racing professionals can do that with a manual transmission.

Back in the early 70s the father of a buddy of mine was a bank manager and had a Plum Crazy Barracuda with a black top. It was a bank repo and they needed somewhere to store it. So Greg's dad offered to make the sacrifice to take it off their hands and took possession. We all have to make sacrifices once in a while I guess...

No cap they robbed tf outta Ken bro which is disgusting, but I tell ya what Enzo Ferrari tipping his hat to Ken not only showing him respect but acknowledging that he knows Ken won that race. That alone would did it for me

non conosco i modelli usati nel film , ma la mia ( personalissima ) classifica delle auto più belle vede al primo posto shelby cobra 456 , ferrari GtO , lancia Montecarlo , a me piacciono queste qui

You’re not doing the Ford Jr. scene justice when you leave out the line “I wish my daddy were here to see this…..to feel this.”.
