A combo's a pattern all right, but I think he means when he says 'pattern play' is that the other player moves his character towards phils and presses buttons in a sequence or 'pattern' that is optimised to limit the options that phil has to interrupt that pattern, like walking up and jabbing at him, something hard to interrupt. But doing so is perfectly legitimate for the other player to do, so we'd all appreciate him not whining about it. Another phrase he's made up is calling jumps or supers "random"- it's supposedly random from his perspective, but obviously the person meant to jump or perform the super at that instant in time, so it's weird to say it that way.
