I “upgraded” my roval slx40’s to the 36 tooth after I convinced myself it was what a sprinter would do. I thought it was great but in races everybody commented they always knew exactly where I was... it is a bit loud. For kicks I just went back to the old 16’s. Probably a better upgrade for a mtn bike.

The 54T was worth the upgrade, do it....Not noisy at all, kinda sweet sounding. Grease is OIL (Different viscosity's) + SOAP (+ Other ingredients), the soap is what 'STICKS' the grease to the surface. Most soaps are hydrophilic (Absorbs water) causing the grease to get that grey foamy look. Marine grease is oil + lithium complex with anti rust and corrosion additives that REPELS WATER. Boat trailers that load regularly that don't use marine grease in the wheel bearings....I don't want to be the person driving behind them down the highway. Anything on the transom, bottom gears or internals on a boat, this is the stuff to use...WATER is repelled by this product (Marine Grease) and is great on anything exposed to water. Works @#!%&! great on a bike and isn't over priced, repacked product (Phil Woods). I have the 54T upgrade and use Marine Grease on the ratchet....Pretty blue color as well.

Hi, I like to thank you for producing this great video that's educational and easy to understand how ratchets work. I like to ask you a question. Appreciate very much if you are able to clear my doubts. I have recently bought a Giant Defy Advanced Pro 2. I understand from my local Giant distributor that the hub used on its SLR carbon wheel disc is having 18t ratchet. However, they do not want to reveal if the hub is a DT Swiss hub. Any idea on this? If it is a DT Swiss, I like to purchase my own ratchet upgrade kit from 18t to 54t. Thank you in advance.

Great for Mt bikes, but how does a DT Swiss hub perform on a road bike freewheeling down a steep hill? I can tell you that compared to a wheel, such as a Zipp wheel with a 188 hub on a spin test, the Zipp will spin at least 10x longer, and you don't need ear plugs. DM

Here's a fun idea: since 36 is an even multiple of 18. What if you installed an 18 star meshing with a 36? in theory, you still get the 36 position 10degree ratcheting, but now instead of just throwing away the old stars, you have created two identical sets; one as a spare. double the value?

One thing I don't know is, what did I just watch? what is a rachet system, do other brands have the same? how is this a thing? I know what ABS does in a car's braking system but, what does a rachet system do in bike hubs rather than screaming to the world, "look at me!, I am alive, recognize my existence!"?
@sickbassdrop
@sickbassdrop 5 жыл бұрын
It decreases the distance your cranks turn before they engage the hub. This makes technical climbs, where you need to stop pedaling at some point then begin again, much easier. You don't eat up all of your pedal stroke before you engage your hub making for a more efficient power transfer. Your ignorance is ok, but the way you ask your question is not. You're condemning something without having any knowledge of it. You would do well to carry this lesson throughout all aspects of your life.
@sickbassdrop
@sickbassdrop 5 жыл бұрын
Also, no, other brands use other configurations of ratchet systems. Most use a pawl and ring system wherein the internal spring loaded pawls engage against a ratchet ring around the circumference of the system (e.g., Hope, Industry 9, Novatec). There are a few brands that are "silent". This is accomplished using a sprag clutch. Go educate yourself!

That said, culd you tell me, what system was the winner/winners of the XC racers been using for the past 10years or even 5 to make things easier. Since DT-Swiss rachet is so good that we gotta have it. Tell me are the winners using this system? if not, maybe it just ain't all that, have you thought of that?

I would need a point to defend first, correct? You must be in serious need of conflict because you're really reaching to accuse me of throwing a tantrum. I'm convinced now that you never actually read my reply. Ok, I'll bite. The last 10 years of UCI XCO World Cup championship have been dominated by both Nino Schurter and Julien Absalon with the exception of Kulhavy, in 2011, I believe. The system and equipment that top pros use means nothing to average Joe riders. Nino Schurter could beat any of us with a Wal-Mart bike. But to answer your challenge Nino has run DT Swiss XMC (or XRC) 1200 wheels in almost every race for the past 3 years and he uses the DT Swiss 36 tooth ratchet system. I have a better upgrade for all those DT swiss riders. It's free! It involves a cardboard and the spokes. You take a small piece of cardboard and fold it. Then you place it between the fork and spokes. It makes even more annoying noise. However I know: you won't accept free because you love to overpay 10x for simple things.
