Albin Irzyk. A true hero and warrior he was. When I was a kid (11-12 years old)I had a history project about Ww2 and watching Greatest Tank Battles as a kid I thought, " Wouldn't it be something to send a letter to Mr. Irzyk on TV and who knows maybe he'd send something back". So I wrote him a letter and sure enough he sent back a reply applauding my interest in Ww2 at such a young age. Also he sent me a signed copy of his book "A Warriors Quilt Of Personal Military History". It's one of my prized possessions to this day. That generation truly is the greatest and we should all never forget their heroics and sacrifice. Rest in peace Brigadier General Albin F. Irzyk

This generation had about 96% of the world's Nazis of all time and this generation tried to tarnish the reputation of the boomers by publishing hit job articles on 'generation me' in times magizine. After the war when the allies and nazis became fwends they would sit around and talk about how they could fire up the human death ovens and camps and start throwing boomers in them and at no point would the selfish boomers rise up to stop it. Thats how great the ww2 generation was really.

My father was a Sherman driver in Patton's 3rd Armored Division. They were part of the relief column sent to Bastonge during the Bulge. Shermans armed with the short-barreled 75mm rifle were utterly useless against Tigers and/or Panthers at any range beyond 600 yards. The Germans used to laugh at them, calling them Ronsons. American attacks had to proceed with what was called warfare by committee, wherein the Germans had to be completely softened up by massive airstrikes and artillery fire missions, lest any attack led by Shermans be bogged down in a grisly debacle of fire, blood and steel. American doctrine dictated that US commanders had to be prepared to lose 4 Shermans to destroy one Tiger. The Israelis got it right by figuring out how to shoehorn the brilliant British L7 105mm gun tube into that tightly cramped Sherman turret, thus creating the legendary Super Sherman, capable of killing a Russian T-55 out to ranges of 3,000 yards.

The biggest problem for the Germans was that by 1944 more and more of the German tanks were being built by slave labor which meant that the tanks that were not sabotaged were so shoddily built that they constantly broke down. Also worsening shortages of gasoline meant that the Germans had to stage their aircraft by pulling them with believe it or not Oxen and could not get enough planes into the air to challenge allied air superiority. Consequently the German armored units remained vulnerable to allied fighter bombers which when the weather was clear enough simply pasted the Germans. Patton being the first U.S. tanker- from the first world war- had always stressed fire and maneuver which was about the best tactic to use given the Shermans speed advantage , lighter armor, and mostly inadequate guns. best Bruce Peek

I do somewhat loathe the fact they forget to mention that only some of those M4s were the earlier ones with 51mm thick frontal armor (they also forget to mention the extreme angle that made it close to 80mm effective) and that they also didn't all carry the short barrel 75mm gun M3. Patton's Third Army had it's fair share of M4A3E8 "Easy Eights" which had the thickness and arrangement of their frontal armor changed (upped to 63.5mm, sloped reduced for more interior space, finally effective armor close to about 92-95mm) and more importantly had the vaunted long barrel High Velocity 76mm gun M1A2, the same gun that armed the M18 Hellcats. They weren't the only ones carrying 76s either. They also had their fair share of M4A1s that were outfitted with the earlier M1A1 76mm gun, the only difference with the gun being the lack of a muzzle brake. For example I believe they got Abrams' tank completely wrong because at this time I believe he was commanding the tank he'd become famous for. Thunderbolt VII. And M4A3E8 Sherman not only with an M1A2 High Velocity 76mm gun but double the frontal armor of a standard M4A3E8 Sherman. They quite literally welded on armor plates off of knocked out or otherwise scrapped Shermans to increase their armor. And while the standard M4A3E8 had decent front armor despite what you might think, flat out doubling it was a whole other beast. This was basically making a homemade M4A3E2 (sometimes erroneously referred to as a "Jumbo" which was not a term used during the war) but ironically better because M4A3E2s only welded addition 32mm plates on the front and side of the hull and had a somewhat thicker gun mantlet. Most E2s also came standard with a 75mm gun. Thunderbolt VII however, like a lot of field modified M4A3E8s, not only had the gun...it had the armor to back it up.
@thegreatdominion949
@thegreatdominion949 Ай бұрын
I think it's a bit too early for E8s. They were just starting to come off the assembly line at the time of this battle. They didn't appear in any numbers in Europe until well into 1945. Besides that, 4th Armoured preferred the 75 mm Sherman and resisted use of 76 mm Shermans as long as they could, unlike some other armoured units, particularly those in 1st U.S. Army. 4th Armoured didn't come up against enemy tanks very often and therefore improved AP capability wasn't that important to them. The HE shell of the 76 mm gun was inferior in damage potential to that of the standard Sherman 75 mm. Consequently they didn't see any point in 'upgrading' at this point in the war.

There were 10 things a tank needs: 1. Producability / low cost. 2. Reliability 3. Speed 4. Efficiency - good miliage 5. Good at taking out infantry in trenches & foxholes 6. Good at going around static defense (bunkers). 7. Good at avoiding or destroying enemy artillery 8. Good at destroying enemy tanks at close range 9. Good at destroying enemy tanks at long range 10. An anti-aircraft weapon. The Sherman had 9/10. It absolutely sucked at #9 though. Fortunately, the US airforce existing forced the Germans attack at Arracourt to occur in the fog, which turned it into a close range knife fight instead of a long range slugfest.

The American tankers barely met any of the best German tanks in Europe, it was the British and Canadians that met up with Tigers and Panthers... Those tanks could kill Shermans very far out. The French Army was already there. They were Vichy French. Allied to Germany after France signed the Armistice. We just took over supplying arms and ammunition to them. Some came with De Gaulle from England, but most of them were picked up in N Africa, and later in Southern France after Operation Dragoon, and were attached to the US 7th Army! Part of the problem with them during Operation Torch was that they didn't want to fight with/under British Command. (Something about retreating from Dunkirk. Lol.) They werent too happy with De Gaulle either, but the British, and Eisenhour forced him on them.

I've said that too. After Operation "Just Cause." It's terrible. Some got physically sick, but I found it completely fascinating. It's a terrible sight to watch someone die by burning, but I was fascinated to the point of not being able to look away. I almost want to say it was an amazing sight, but I think fascinating is a better description of what I felt. I think it might have been different if it were Americans burning, but maybe not. I didnt think about putting them out, or even shooting them. I just watched/stared in silence. I couldn't turn away. I hope I never see it again, but,,,,,

Arracourt was not the biggest tank battle in the NW Europe Campaign. It came after 8 Panzer Divisions had been destroyed in the battle of attrition around Caen. Also the US 8th Air Force took credit as many German armoured vehicles were destroyed by air attack rather than Patton's Shermans.

The American's had "shot their bolt" out of the Falaise Pocket, heading for Germany. Which happened due to the rivalry of Patton & Montgomery. Montgomery changed Patton's plans for the invasion of Cecally, because the Germans had worked out Patton's plan, & because Patton had been suspended from duties for hitting a man, with PTSD. Patton, big on gestures, crap at logistics.
