Just finished the book, it was absolutely phenomenal! I have read both The Girls and Daddy by Emma Cline and The Guest has to be my favorite! And same, Emma, I LOVE Alex. Obviously not her ethics but as a character she's just perfect. I was hooked and the ending killed me. Thankyou for this interview and this incredible work! LOVE that Dua asked about the theories!! She served us what we wanted!!!

i felt comforted by this video. very appreciative that dua gets so into the plot. great guest too. i'll probably watch this one a few more times but im looking forward to the next one too.

I LOVED The Guest. It was one of the best things I've ever read. I even feel like I know what happens to Alex after it. Because the book seemed to take place back when there was sex for sale on the back page of the community newspaper, and when there used to be a great deal of pharmaceutical painkillers around everybody's house, I couldn't help but think of Alex as one of the victims of the Long Island Serial Killer (circa 2007-8 maybe?) I hope that never happens to her because we never get to read The Guest 2.

Try Milorad Pavic "The Dictionary of Khazars". There are 2 editions, male and female. The difference is slight, but they are connected, there is a message. When I did my degree in English lit at Cambridge, my medieval tutor really liked it. It is not an easy read. All Pavic's books are very esoteric, and the imagery is so unique, style wise, I never read anything like that, and I read a lot. I read his complete works. It is almost like you have to break the code. And it is not only comprehending the characters, but you are having a relationship with the author (not the narrator). I highly recommend him. However, only Khazars I read in English, all the others I read in Serbian. So I don't know how well they translate. We'll done with this book club.

Thanks for the episode. I like the part when you are discussing social classes, it reminds me of Pierre Bourdieu's theory "Education, social and cultural reproduction," which was inspired by Karl Marks. Alex represents what the middle class has been undergoing through history : escaping poverty to reach the well-off living, which does not come true to everyone's illusion 😉 "one day I will become well-off". I do respect ambitious people, but in the real world, even ambition has to be realistic-something you can do, not just dream of. French say " arrêtez de vivre dans le monde des Bisounours 🐻"
