But isn’t that part of having a brand? Take Beyonce for example, she’s known for having choreography in her tours/artistry because that’s what she wants. So when people go to the concerts, they expect that from her. Then we have someone like Adele, who is not know for having choreography. She just sings her heart out. ED for example, isn't trying to make you shake your ass in a club, that isn't his music. If you ever go to a rock concert, they are working their asses off to play their instruments, sing, and make you feel alive in the crowd. Women who put out dance club tracks are expected to dance because that is what they want you to do in the crowd or in the club... If you can sing/rap really, really well but don't dance, that shouldn't be a problem. A lot of amazing singers, writers or etc. (for exemple Adele, Mariah) don't dance. Imo, they'll be remembered more than just a normal singer who can dance. But I do agree about expectations people have for women about dancing... But at the same time, those expectations are here for people who, maybe, are mediocre at singing and who NEED dancing to be interesting...

I feel like if this was coming from Megan it would make some sense. Black women are rarely allowed to flourish in mainstream music, so having these elaborate dances is a way for us to stand out. It's almost become a requirement for Black women in pop, rappers and singers alike. But coming from Dua Lipa this feels so disingenuous. I have never in my life watched her and thought, "You know what this needs? Some choreo." And her dances never added anything to her performances imo so idk. It feels like she's trying to gaslight us into thinking "pretty good singing + not so good dancing = great performance" when you can easily point to artists with the same gimmick who pull it off so much better. Megan is literally one of them! Anyways, she can't dance and it's fine but why keep adding choreo to performances if she knows it's not her strong suit? It just makes zero sense to me.

i get that dua lipa feels that way, but some of the men that “just stand there” actually write their own music, she doesn’t. it’s also ironic that harry styles is in the thumbnail when he dances the whole time EDIT bc i’m going to elaborate on what i meant when i said dua doesn’t write her songs: Dua Lipa has song writing credits on many of her songs, but she’s not in writing sessions most of the time. she works with well-known writers who can easily churn out good “radio pop” songs. She might tweak things here or there, but she helps edit things that are written for her. using harry styles and Taylor Swift as examples (bc it’s a male and female example who sing with instruments, but also dance on stage) both have people they write their songs with (harry has Mitch Rowland and Kid Harpoon, Taylor has Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner. these are examples from many behind the scenes documentaries that look at how harry/taylor write their stuff) both harry and Taylor bring notebooks full of nearly completed songs and their co-authors will help tweak things or add additional ideas to make it better. It’s the other way around with Dua Lipa. If someone were to ask you to think of a female lyricist in the 21st-century, you would not think of Dua Lipa, you would think of someone like Taylor Swift. to think of Dua Lipa as an extremely talented lyricist is just not true. she’s a talented singer and a wonderful performer, and she doesn’t need to write her own songs to do that. However, the songs she writes are mostly written for her, while she changes a little bit after. I agree that women are not treated fairly in the music industry, but I would also argue that it’s not fair to the band that Dua Lipa‘s team ripped off levitating from🤷🏻♀️

I think there's some truth to her comment. that said tho, I feel like the entire dua lipa brand was built on top of money and big budget from the label / mgmt. she's a great pop star, but I haven't yet seen anything that's so distinctively hers and unique. She doesn't have the best singing voice and needs a vocal coach at the studio. She had close to no stage presence until they hired her probably the best choreographers in the industry. She has a team of ppl handing her great beats and tracks that would have gone popular regardless and she just sings generic melodies on top of those already made tracks. With all of that external help (not limited to top choreographers, writing camps consisting of absolute talents, a vocal coach, top hair and makeup team, top line music video production and show production) supported by a big budget, nearly anyone could become a pop star...

I think the terms 'stage presence' and using 'choreography' are often classified as going hand-in-hand when this is definitely isn't the case. You don't need to be able to do choreo to be a good performer, but you need stage presence. I agree with what she meant but not how she worded it. The bar is really high for female performers to sing, dance/play an instumrent, and to have visuals, but as honest mentioned playing an instrument is as taxing as dancing. Her mentioning the guitar discredited her point, but I think she was more so talking about the visual aesthetic aspect and playing an instrument isn’t visually stimulating. Also there are more female celebrities that play an instrument and dance during their shows, she could be referring to that. Dancing does not make you a musician. Most so called artists these days are not really musicians. I would call them entertainers. Someone like a great violin player who has spent their life being able to make an inanimate object express human emotion has earned the right to stand there. The audience is appreciating his or her skill and musicianship with an instrument. When half of your performance and artistry is based on what your wearing and how you shake your behind it is not comparable in anyway to someone whose artistry is based on the ability and skill with a musical instrument. As such a distinction should be made between a musician and entertainer ( a musician can be both). A musician doesn't need to shake their behind to be appreciated. Anyway I love Dua and her songs and of course dance ability but I can't really compare it musically with a great instrumentalist who does not need to shake their behind vigorously. Joshua Bell, Hendrix, Segovia, Paco de Lucia, do not need to dance around because half of their artistry and talent doesn't reside in their hips. Obviously it is my opinion and I have a preference for instrumentalists as musicians. If I'm a pop/rap singer/artist whose dancing and hip shaking is my draw I would not want to compare myself with a real musician. I would just be happy that most of today's music listeners can be satisfied with dancing, simple melodies, and tight clothes. And that they are making these types of artists lots of money. Maybe all this money could be used later in life to learn an instrument and then gain a better understanding of why they can just stand there; it's not a double standard it's a distinction between how two different types of art can be appreciated one doesn't depend on body movements.

If you have that it factor, you can stand there and let your talent do the work. If not, you best be dancing and putting on a show. If you’re talented and have presence, it won’t matter what you wear, how much surgery you’ve had, or if you’re dancing. Sadly most artists today just don’t have it.

I think it’s just an activisms issue thing that all these celebs need to take up so they can fit in. Dua has just taken this feminist cause and I don’t believe she genuinely believes in all the aspects of it, just something she has to do. Remember when Taylor Swift just kept to herself during the 2016 election and the following years. She got slammed by the press and even got accused of being a white supremacist. Then Taylor was pretty much forced to act and she endorsed that Democrat senator candidate running in TN (lol which lost badly to a very conservative woman btw) then she released “you need to calm down” and “the man” appealing to LGBT and feminist activists. We have come to a point where these public figures are indirectly forced to take up anyone of these leftist issues otherwise left wing media outlets will come after them (as they did with TS) I think in reality Dua is way more focused on her art and developing her sound to become a new unique pop star and maybe reach Lady Gaga influence level one day, but it’s way too early for that now, she’s got a lot more time. So yeah I think that’s her priority, these activist issue things I wouldn’t take so seriously, again it’s just a thing they need to do. This video was correct in it’s analysis. But to be fair to Dua other similar celebs have said way worse dumb stuff. Dua is actually very intelligent and the political issue she actually believes in is advocating for her people in Kosovo.

I don’t think it’s a leftist thing, it’s just a marketing thing (corporate pandering). Dua’s and most popstars’ target audiences are younger than 25 (i.e. the people who form political views based on naivity rather than experience). Some artists like Katy, Taylor or Beyoncé never once spoke for gay rights but after most of the fight was over (I.e. gay marriage being legalized) and the years since now it’s almost universally accepted in the western world to be gay they can pretend to fight for it now. Meanwhile the likes of Gaga, Madonna, and to a lesser extent Christina clearly aren’t being controlled on puppet strings, which makes them controversial but also very influential. While I don’t think Dua is some plant, it’s painfully obvious she doesn’t have control over things like her image or her music (no matter how good it is)

I do see where Dua was coming from, but ultimately I think you’re right. I think it's about how you present your artistry

💯 Agreed. Dua already has good stage presence and shouldn't feel pressured to conform to the caliber of other dance/ pop artists. Tbh if she toned down the elaborate dancing and focused more on vocals she could be an even greater performer imo.

I know miss thing who literally got called out many times by audiences for her lack of stage presence and dance, ain’t talking. Miss Dua, someone with a guitar can have an impact and it’s not all just about a grand performance sometimes and vice versa. She really thought she did sum.

She's a dance pop artist. Of course she has to dance. Apparently, Ed Sheeran should breakdance while playing guitar or strap Adele in a harness to do air flip while singing "Easy on Me". I get that artists should have stage presence while performing but different genres comes on different mode performance. Many rock and metal bands, even rappers can give great performance without dancing or whatever. I'm sick of people complaining about "man with a guitar" or "men getting away with anything".

For live performances: Every artist male or female including Dua Lupa just needs to find their rhythm on stage and stick with it. Its not meant for everybody to be dancing , having choreo, movin around or being hyper on stage now if you want that in your live performances thats fine but remember: know your artistry and create your own presence.

I feel like female pop stars are expected to dance and put on performances simply because a lot of female pop stars are lacking in the vocals department. When you look at modern-day pop stars, they usually don't stand out because of their vocals, so they have to make it up in other areas. Dua's vocals are good, but they're not great enough to make up for her stage presence. That's why amazing vocalists usually don't put on a dance performance because the focus is on their vocals. Honestly if any artist that's popular for their "get up and dance" music isn't on stage dancing, it would be a very boring performance. Dua doesn't release emotional songs like Adele, Demi, Kelly, etc. She needs to do more because her music calls for it.

Didn’t she just learn to dance last week Chile 😂😭✋🏾 why does it always have to be a competitive thing like can’t you just be good on your own ?? why do you have to compare yourself to other artist or even men at that …. I mean I kind of get what she was saying low-key but I’m just so sick of this like worry about yourself.
