There is a version of the same dual bay enclosure (from either Yottamaster or Orico...they seems to use the same OEM) that only require a single cable to access both SSD, instead of two separate cables as what was shown here. That's a better option, IMO

Perhaps the APFS support combining multiple physical disk into a single volume. I managed to add an extra volume to an external SSD which Time Machine is running on, I don't even have to dismount/eject the Time Machine drive while adding the volume, the newly created volume is immediately usable, WOW.

Cool. This thing can be used for TimeMachine backup for a couple of Mac’s. Or use 1 drive for TimeMachine & the 2nd for file/folder transfers. It’s as fast the Samsung T7. It’s Not as fast for use as an external hard drive though like the Acasis tool free ‎TBU-401E Thunderbolt4 enclosure using Thunderbolt ports & cables. I like the idea using it for Drive1-TimeMachine & Drive2-files/folder transfer. Since they are the PCIe NVMe Gen.4 M.2 SSD compatible. Thanks for sharing this.

You don't need to buy top tier SSD for enclosing gen 3 is plenty because u will be bottlenecked by the USB 3.2 gen 2 or 1 whichever u have the more expensive version is thunderbolt 4 case which gets you closer to max speed from nvme.

I found this on Amazon among the first few results and wasn't too sure because I've never heard of Yottamaster before (I think it's referring to Yottabytes by the way, which is 1000 Exabytes which is 1000 Petabytes, which is 1000 Terabytes lol. Basically it's a crap load of storage). Good to see it's actually pretty decent, I'm in the process of replacing my old iMac with a new Mac Mini M2 Pro set up and wanted to replace as much of my external spinning disk storage with SSD as I could. Given how cheap NVME drives are now even compared to the much slower and larger 2.5" things I thought why not get an enclosure that could handle more than one of the things. It's kind of a shame it doesn't combine them with some kind of hardware RAID with a single connector, though for that I'd expect to be paying quite a bit more. I could sacrifice two ports and RAID them in Mac OS I guess. I'll want to use it as my media drive. My iTunes library is like 3.5TB thanks to all my Blu-Ray rips from the days before streaming was a thing haha. I'd want to RAID 1 it so it's copied to both drives at the same time.

Thanks for the info and good luck with everything. The enclosure is fairly inexpensive and not bad for the price. There are better enclosures out there but they will cost quite a bit more. I do wish you can use this in raid too, but in the end you need to use 2 different cables with this one so it's not really an option on this unless you have both connected at the same time. So not sure how that would even work with built in Mac Raid if you raided that way. But, if you want two different SSDS completely isolated from each other then this is a good option. In some cases that is not a bad idea because if people mess up raid (pull the wrong failed drive they can really cause issues), they can be in a bad place. So this is a good option to keep the data isolated and safe and it's basically like having 2 enclosures built into a single chassis.

Have you tried encrypting the disk using the standard APFS encryption via Disk Utility? I've noticed significant speed decreases (-50%) for my USB-C SSDs if I directly connect them to a port of an Apple Silicon machine. Oddly enough, not so when the USB-C drive is first connected to an external Thunderbolt 3 dock. 🤔

Yes, you will get slower speeds when using the APFS encryption but I'm not sure that is due to the enclosure. I have not seen what you are describing though.

But the difference is night and day if the drive is connected directly via USB-C to a Mac or while taking a detour to connect the same USB-C drive (!) first to a Thunderbolt hub which is connected to the Apple Silicon Mac. I am not talking about the ~5% toll for using encryption. I am talking about the 50% drop when using it straight via USB, which isn't occuring when first connected via TB.

@@ometofu raid can be good as I work in a data center. But this is a simple device and for most users who are not familiar with raided devices they tend to be riskier. For example pulling wrong drive during failure and erasing data. I may do a few raided reviews in future but this is a great device for under 50.

I use it so that I have 2 different drives to back up to for various reasons. I can backup to one and then move the copy to the other with a script and have 2 backups of all my data quickly.

Thanks for that! One question - i am not that into ssds and enclosures. Is the speed capped because of the nvme, the enclosure or the cable? It says up to 10Gbits which would be about 10000 Mb/s if im correct you only get 1/10 of that. I don’t need to full 10Gbits but between 5-7 would be nice. Do i need a faster cable? better nvmes or is the enclosure the limiting factor?

You are getting the bit and bytes wrong. You need to divide 10 Gbps by 8 for that conversion. So 10,000 / 8 = 1,250 MB/s and that is before the overhead of the enclosure or cable. So expect about 800 to 1000 MB/s in most cases. I hope this helps.

@@craigneidel I don't *NEED* 2800 MB/s but over the years the operating systems get bigger and slower and require faster machines to keep up with the bloated OS features. Of course, manufacturers have an incentive to bloat their software so they can sell newer machines. Getting the fastest today allows it to be tolerable 5 years from now on the same machine. Also my goal is to work off the external drive ( lots of Xcode work ) directly. Since my internal drive is ~5,000+ MG/s, it would be a really noticeable slowdown going to 900 MB/s. Plus Xcode is not the fastest software even on good machines.

Apple silicon has really screwed the end user in upgradeability terms now, and as if that wasn’t enough, their storage upgrade costs are criminally extortionate! Looking to get one or two external thunderbolt enclosures myself for a Mac Studio M1 Max I got a 25% discount on, and the Acasis models seem to get brought up a lot on KZbin. Waiting for a decent price before taking the plunge as have plenty of spare SSD’s since the cost dropped markedly.

Thanks for watching and the comment. The one thing I do and mention is that I do product showcases. I'm a small creator and like to find products that are different and I think are interesting and then do a product showcase (not a full review). So I did test the other side myself but my videos are not about specifications or extreme hardware testing. My channel is more fun and about just showcasing a product so people know these small products exist. I always tell people to research before buying but I normally won't do a video on a small tech product unless I like it. I'm only one person so I actually don't feel comfortable doing extreme testing on things, or calling things out as 100%, since I am human and make mistakes. In the end though I just like to show people different tech, and a bunch of Mac stuff, but don't get into extreme testing or benchmarks. I try and keep it lite (don't want to get into a Linus Tech Tips situation that is going on today - kidding). The other bay does work fine but keep in mind you need 2 cables to use both and they don't show up as one drive etc. (no raid). Thanks for watching.

i might consider it for 2 reasons, one dedicated to mac backup machine, one for storing data, currently my external drive has one major issue, when i leave my imac on 24/7 but put it to sleep at night, i get random disconnects and they say drive not ejected properly, and i can't eject what is not visible so i just unplug it and plug it back since i cant eject it after that or idk the orther method, if drive is visible i can eject if not i cant thats what i know.ill try to shut down my desktop daily to attempt to solve the issue even though it is a pain in the ass to. but in all honestly i only got external drive because i had poor storage 256gb, proba lly did not need it but when i buy imac pro or macbook pro i will get 512 to 1tb option and also buy icloud storage because i dislike the machine backup or external ssd/nvme crashes. and its not expesnive imo, right now 200gb icloud is 3 euro per month, honestly that for me is more than enoigh because i look at my current use and i don't go past that even externally where i can easy remove the data, reason i do not is i have installed apps that take extra space but not icloud space,

Not sure why it would be doing that. I have tested it with a few drives and I don't get that. Try reversing the cable or using another cable. Or it could be a bad board but that is unlikely since there are two boards in there so test both sides.

I just started considering an external setup. I was just gonna Get a Samsung t7 or something like that but would serious like this be much less likely to have failure and loss of data like the regular external ssds from popular companies that are already made ? Also do you typically need software to run this kind of setup like you would with premade ssds, like Samsung for example? I just want something that is least likely to fail and curious if this lasts longer than the other option , also if it’s easier to retrieve data . I read sandisks have a firmware update that won’t even let people retrieve their data

These are just a different way of doing it. If the enclosure fails then you can remove the SSD and if the SSD fails you still have the enclosure. But if you get a good M.2 for this it will be the same quality as the ones you buy and maybe even faster. You just need to format the M.2 Drives when you add them to any external device like this for the computer you will be using them on.

Hello. I'm looking for dual NVMe M.2 or dual sata 2.5" via 1 cable + RAID, high speed is not needed, but it is necessary to support 4tb ssd (total 8tb). I don't want a NAS, they're all bulky and rated for 3.5", although I want to put a pair of 2.5" or m2 ssd. I know about the asus for 6 m2 ssd, but so far such a volume is not required. it is very surprising that ssd has been around for a long time, but there is nothing designed only for 2.5 ". P.S. I hate hdd, lonies are noisy, bulky, fragile, and die like flies.

You do have very unique videos I really like it for some crazy reason I like these external drives to have a bunch of them and I don’t even really need them. I am working on putting together a whole new back up program for my home computer set up I may go with an hours I’m just not sure yet actually before I invest in SNL Jean as I think I’m going to just use all of the drives I have because I got several 2 TB drive that are brand new and they’re nice you know I got some Samsung’s brand new ones I’ve got some Sandisc drives so I think I’m gonna train you, so I’ve got first

That would be on a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure and I have done that also but this is only a cheap 10 Gbps enclosure. So you can't get those speeds here but it's still fast enough for 95% of people.

I would avoid the crucial P3 or P2 plus 4tb as they only has a TBW of 800TB, there only advantage is that they run fairly cool as they are PCI 3 devices. I like the fanxiang S880 4TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD M.2 2280 for $30 more it is PCI 4 and has a TBW of 2800TB for the 4tb model 1400TB TBW for the 2tb model and 700TB TBW for the 1tb drive. I prefer single drive caddies to duel drive units, for size, and cost, but each to there own. I would avoid any PCI 5 NVMe drives as are really pointless as no normal system for the for se able future can use there speed anyway, they are overpriced by a massive margin, they have issues with running so hot you really need active cooling or they thermal throttle and that will shorten there life span.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I use the SN770 and it works great and runs fine in this system. I would argue that 800 TB life is more than most people will ever need. Plus they normally can last 2 times as long. In the end somebody would need to be writing like 50 GB per day for 40 years to reach that and while it's possible depending on use most would be nowhere close to that.

Yes, usually (on average) the PCIe 4 will be hotter than the 3. They run faster and produce more heat in most cases but not all. Cooling make a big difference and can be done so many ways. Finally, I don't have any experience with the Apacer line of SSDs so I'm not sure if that would be compatible or not. I'll need to check out that line.

Funny, yes you can but those are 40 Gbps enclosures and much more money. This is a 10 Gbps enclosure like 90% of the ones out there and a very reasonable speed for that. In fact 800 MB/s (not Gb per second like you said) is fast enough for 90% of all tasks and I can even edit 4K videos on this easily. So it's fast enough for most people unless you know that you need the speed for specific thigs. Then you can spend normally about $100 more for the enclosure and get the 40 Gbps enclosure that goes up to the 2,800 MB/s. I have many videos on those enclosures.

Then use raid. I have seen many people lose data with raid over the years working in a data center so it's just another option.

Terrible, how fast do you need? 98% of the population could use this and be happy with the speed. I can edit high codec 4K HD video off it. I know there are faster enclosure and I review them, but in the end what do you do that warrant's a higher speed. And having to wait 2 more seconds doesn't count. What are you doing where you need 2,800 MB/s and that is a fair question. I try and help people and people love to waste money on expensive stuff. In the end they don't need it and for an external drive 875 MB/s is more speed than 98% of the population would need and even the people that need to wait another 5 seconds can do that in most cases. So I just need to follow up on this comment because people always say that but what do you do that warrants a faster speed?

The speed is fine, and not slow for what it is. It’s advertised as 10Gbps USB. The typical max throughput for enclosures of that type is 850-950MB/sec in the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. Craig’s result is exactly in that range. Sure, the SSD itself can go much faster…if you mount it internally. But we are talking about an external enclosure, and that means you are restricted to external protocols. The only way to beat this enclosure is to step up to a 40Gbps protocol like Thunderbolt 4/USB 4. But you are going to spend 3 to 4 times as much money. And even then, 40Gbps is not enough to use the full speed of today’s best NVMe SSDs, like the ones that can reach 7000MB/sec. That’s about one-third faster than what Thunderbolt 4/USB 4 can achieve. So for lots of people, getting around 900MB/sec in a cheap enclosure is great, and works well for all kinds of things. It’s more than good enough for my photo and video editing. Especially because…in real world use, many tasks, including backups, don’t even come close to exceeding 10Gbps USB3 due to things like file system overhead.

@@brightboxstudioYes but why buy a pcie gen 4 x 4 high end drive to put in an enclosure like that? Just buy one of the cheapies like a 4TB Lexar that you can probably get for the same price as the 2TB WD. Will still be bottlenecked by the interface.

@@mondotv4216I don’t buy the super fast SSDs for my 10Gbps enclosures. Like you say, there’s no need. I just get something affordable at the right capacity, since most now comfortably exceed 10Gbps. I was replying to the comment that seemed to want something a lot faster than 10Gbps. If they really need 2800GB/sec, then like I already said you can’t use 10Gbps USB 3 anyway so they shouldn’t even be watching this video, they must pay 3-4 times as much for a USB4/Thunderbolt enclosure.
