Thanks! I've done plenty of Ubuntu Server installs before, but I was a bit insecure about the partitioning when doing it in dual boot without seperate physical HDDs. Ubuntu Desktop has a feature that recognizes a Windows installation and does this all automatically for you, but Ubuntu Server requires you to do it manually. This helped me out a lot!

For people who are having issues at 13:02 where you dont get the /boot/efi option, here are some steps to make it work. 1) If your windows is in legacy bios you need to convert it to GPT. You can do that by logging into windows, running cmd at admin level and they typing the command mbr2gpt.exe /convert /allowFullOS. Now if you get an error here you need to fix few things. There is a video "A Solution to "Cannot find OS partition(s) for disk 0" - MBR2GPT". Follow that. Then after correcting the errors, rerun the mbr2gpt command. Then redo whats mentioned on this video. You will see the /boot/efi option. You dont need to download any software to fix this

For anybody that has a Mac, after you make your bootable USB, plug it in, reboot your computer, hold down the option key as soon as you hear the startup chime until the screen displays a list of drives. Double click on the EFI Boot option (most likely an orange icon), and your Mac will boot from your USB.

And by the way I also ran into an issue with the partition shrinking. Windows stores immovable files(like the pagefile) at the end of the disk so you can only shrink the partition by 0 Bytes. There are multiple ways to fix this, but this video fixed it for me: "kzbin.info/www/bejne/jl6Tg2qHlNubo9k"

Yupp, no special UEFI based system, an ordinary 2015 American Megatrends ROM Monitor. Does that have any effect on the Ubuntu Server installation?
@SavvyNik2 жыл бұрын
Yes it does effect the installation, this was meant for a UEFI based BIOs system, although, there's not much difference.. there are a couple of locations for the bootloader that make all the difference. I suggest looking for a video that shows MBR (legacy) install.

Make sure you have UEFI enabled on Windows, and not Legacy. Check this in system information If you have legacy, you need to switch to UEFI. First make sure your drive has 3 or fewer partitions Then make sure all those partitions are Windows readable (no ext4, only NTFS or FAT) Then reboot windows into recovery mode (Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Restart now) Go to to troubleshoot > advanced options > commmand line Log into your admin account after the reboot Check if you can convert using the command "mbr2gpt.exe /validate" If the check are succesfull you've done the previous steps correctly and you can convert to UEFI now. Run the command "mbr2gpt.exe /convert" and wait for the prompt to finish. If you get an error about WindowsRE or Recovery Environment, I wasn't able to figure this out, but it didn't seem like a problem. Now you can install Ubuntu server. You might want to adjust your partitions again now, as they need to be done before you do the installation. I do this with a live-USB of Ubuntu desktop, and launching GParted. First select your main drive (the entire drive, so the device itself) as the boot-drive. Then select the partition you want to use for Ubuntu Server root directory, and format it to whatever filesystem you want. Install as normal.
