Such a mundane thing but even after several decades working on bikes I just learned a couple things about something I've worn out and replaced without much thought. For one, I never flipped the lever for Presta valves unless the rubber fitting was getting worn and I assumed it was just a sign I needed to replace the head (and I'd always swear that I had replace the entire valve for just a small part). But I come from a Silca world where there was no lever to flip. Second, I never really considered how they work! They just did and I moved on to bigger things. I do think when I swap my gaskets next (soon), I'll be smearing a very thin coat of silicon grease on any rubber parts just to be sure everything moves smoothly. Thanks RJ!

Thanks alot dude! My pump head was only feeding the schrader and not the presta. After disassembly i found the rubber ball was gunked up with tubeless sealant and was effektively glued in place! After cleaning and reassembly works like a charm! Who knew valve heads could be serviced? :D

This morning, I went to the bike shop to get a new dual valve (it's leaking on the Schrader side, which was seldom used...it's still usable on the Schrader side, but not on the Presta side. They did not have it. I went to the local hardware shop, which suggested the bike shop... Then I found this video ! Thanks a lot!

This helped me make my pump work again. The problem: I had air coming out of the wrong side. Because I now understand how the pump prevents air coming out from both sides, I thought: "what if I place the pumphead sideways?" This fixed my problem, because now the ball inside the pumphead was doing its work again. Thank you! 🎉

I have a similar pump and it stopped working on the schrader side. Took it apart after watching this video and cleaned the internals and the rubber ball and lightly oiled everything before putting it back together. Now it works like a dream again on both sides of the head. There was just so much dust and grime inside the ball valve that it was stuck to one side.

I'm so glad I found your video! The hose on my unit got broken close to the head and your disassembly helped me to understand that I can just reconnect the head again. The hose is just a little shorter, but it beats buying new pump. There is one more fault that I wasn't able to fix though and that's the lever dropping down, breaking the clamping force on the valve. It looks like the piece is just worn down too much. What I do is I wedge a piece of wood in the head which fixes the lever in place. Thanks and have a like!

I had some fun the other day trying to pump an inner tube, which had been taken off the bike to find a slow-ish leak - and the air kept on coming out of the wrong hole on the pump. Now I know why. I had tried putting my finger over the wrong hole to stop the airflow - but probably reinforced the flow to that hole. I ended up using another pump, but now have wisdom on my side -- for next time! Great Vid.

The presta side is also a Dunlop side. I have dunlop and auto-schrader valves. I use floor pump at garage. I have also short travel pump that has turnable head. One head is for presta-dunlop and other is for auto-schrader. Thanks for the hint, i can turn the pump gum sealing around for new contact! 😄

Could you flip the positions of the holes so the presta valve goes on the end of the head?
@RJTheBikeGuy4 жыл бұрын
Probably not. Why? You are second person to ask this. Why???
@brauljo4 жыл бұрын
@@RJTheBikeGuy Well I kinda feel like the schrader hole is placed at more prominent position, probably because it's a more common valve. But if you primarily or exclusively use it for presta, then it'd be a bit nicer to switch their positions. You'd also have an easier time using it on a disc wheel where the valve sits in a cut out.
@ber29963 жыл бұрын
the ball was the key on why when the other nozzle is in use the pump air doesn't just come out on the other nozzle, because when there's a greater pressure from outside (air from tire) the ball is pushed to the other nozzle hole effectively sealing the the other nozzle air hole. As for why the air doesn't simply go back to the pump it's because there is another "one way" ball mechanism at the base of the pump. Amazing how they can think of such mechanism.
@SosiskaTheHorrible3 жыл бұрын
That’s a better explanation than RJ, I wasn’t getting it at first, cheers 👍🏼
@GenePavlovsky Жыл бұрын
I think this is the correct explanation. And when you try to pump up a completely flat tire, there's no back-pressure from the tire pushing the ball, so there's a high chance the air will just come on the wrong side...

Great & informative video. Something that you use all the time but had no idea how it worked, now I do. For those that plan on working on theirs, if you want to extend the life of the rubber seals 303 Protectant works great & when re-assembling the parts, spraying some rubbing alcohol will make things much easier.
