Dang, been running dual rank RAM since as long as forever. I didn't KNOW why at the time, but I ALWAYS chose 4x4GB or 4x2GB set ups back in the day until I finally learned about dual rank. I preferred the lower timings of the RAM and always seemed to have better performance than everyone else with two sticks. Dunno if it was a dual rank thing OR if it was just the lower timings. everyone always moaned about the memory controller struggling but I never had issues with that. Sure, I didn't have an upgrade path for more RAM, but I always threw in more than enough to hit that sweet spot that was always more than enough until the system was obsolete. Now I'm running 2x16GB DDR4 3600 C16 dual rank RAM (G.Skill Ripjaws ending in GVKC). But does Zen 3 support quad rank or not? I'm curious because I'll buy another identical kit just to have quad rank lol. Just not sure if Zen 3 consumer chips support it... I'm on a 5900x. Obviously Zen 3 consumer chips only support dual channel, but what about quad rank?

@@pottsinozadventures1930 yes, you may get a performance increase by increasing your ram capacity (16GB vs 32 vs 64). I was referring to channels and rank which max out at quad channel (2 dual rank or 4 single rank). Once you have reached a quad channel setup, the performance will not come from adding more sticks in itself, but the capacity of memory in the sticks.

@@_Booker_DeWitt I actually got 2 more sticks a few months back, 64gb now, I'm unsure whether it's the 4x2 ranks or the Ram upgrade, neither are obvious to me, but I tested some games and my minimums were better on 64gb. Now I've heard that upgrading Ram generally improves things as there is less stress on the drive, can store more stuff in Ram, and it will compress stuff less, but idk what actually caused it. Far Cry New Dawn also had massive stutters on 32gb not apparent on 64gb. I'm guessing like you said, it was the Ram capacity. This is a weird one, nobody seems to talk about 4x dual rank sticks.

Having 4 dual rank sticks also stresses the CPU’s memory controller and can limit max ram overclocks.
@deleater

I don't understand one thing. If the data bus width is 64-bit per channel and in a dual channel platform you have 128-bit wide bus together regardless if there are two of four stick of ram then how can having a single or dual "rank" make any difference in effective memory bandwidth? Please someone explain! May be I am missing something!?
@ToTheFuz
@ToTheFuz 3 жыл бұрын
@@deleater I'm definitely not a professional so take what I say with a grain of salt as this is my 2 cents. Ram has a refresh rate, so it can only be addressed by the CPU as fast as that refresh rate allows. If you have two sticks of memory in dual channel, the CPU can pull a string of information from one channel (one stick of ram) whilst the other channel is refreshing (the second stick), and then in the next clock cycle the first stick of ram refreshes, and second stick is able to be addressed. In the case of 4 sticks of ram. The CPU can pull 2 strings of data from the same channel per clock cycle rather than just the one as the CPU can now fetch from two different addresses in two memory modules. Of course this wouldn't exactly double performance or anything, but could help in memory dependent applications.
@RicochetForce

@@ToTheFuz You nailed it. IIRC dual rank memory enables memory interleaving which I think is the name for what you just described.
@kognak6640
@kognak6640 3 жыл бұрын
@@ToTheFuz Each memory channel works independently from each other. They work simultaneously just fine, you wouldn't get combined bandwidth out of memory otherwise. Memory ranks are different thing, they are sets of memory within one channel. A 16GB dual rank module has two 8GB sets. Two single rank modules(in one channel) does same from memory management perspective. Performance benefit comes from ability to access different rank while first one is still doing previous memory operation. But still same bus at same clock speed so it's not big difference. Quad rank means there's 4 sets of memory in one channel, you need two DR modules for that. It's not memory interleaving, interleaving is between memory banks(subset of rank).

I always heard that was kind of a problem on the FX Bulldozer/Piledriver CPU's. I wonder just how much it actually effects stability on, say.. 4th gen Intel CPU's or 7th gen Intel. Or 10th gen. Not gonna name 'em all but, yeah, just curious. I always preferred having 4x sticks. I purposefully bought 4x4GB DDR3 1866mhz for my FX-8350 rig years ago. Only one game in my life ever needed more than 16GB (DCS: World), but it ran fine with 16GB for the most part. But, yeah, if I wanted more than 16GB, that wouldn't have made things easy. Then, again, that system had Windows 7 Home Premium so 16GB is the max supported RAM for that OS, anyways. Not really a problem on Windows 10, anymore. Home supports 128GB or something and Pro supports 2TB. But, yeah, I've always preferred 4x sticks despite the warnings out there of it being too stressful on memory controllers. I never had any issues. I don't overclock RAM. Anyone that's OC'd for enough years has to come to the conclusion that OC'ing RAM will corrupt your OS at some point. I just buy what I need/want.

If you want to get even more detailed, you need to look at the topology of the ram slots on the motherboard. If it is Daisy Chain, then 2 DIMS of dual rank ram will hit the fastest speeds (in the correct dimm slots). If it is a T-Topology, then having 4 single rank dimms or 2 dual rank dims will be about the same performance and reach about the same speeds (other than lower memory dimms can achieve higher frequencies easier).

Hi Sir, i was looking into RAM and motherboards and while i read that most motherboards have a daisy chain RAM topology, i was looking at 16x2 Gb RAM kits at 3200mhz and 3600mhz for ryzen cpu since i aim for 32gb and 2 dual ranked modules are best for daisy chain RAM topology. But the problem is i could only find kits at cl16 for 3200mhz and cl18 for 3600mhz and not cl14 or cl16 respectively which is considered to be kind of the sweet spot though more expensive. While on 4x8 kits i could find the desirable cl14 at 3200mhz or cl16 at 3600mhz. Does that mean i should search for a T topology motherboard and use a 4x8 kit to get the best of both worlds? I was looking on the b550 motherboards and btw i did manage to find a hyper x fury 16 gb single module at cl17 and 3600mhz but i cannot be sure if it is dual ranked but most of them are so i guess it will be as well, its the (HX436C17FB3A/16). The Question is: Are 4x4GB faster than 2x8GB of the same clocks and CAS if they have same amount of Ranks. Let's say rank 1 since it makes more difference. The x570 Tomahawk has a daisy chain ram Topology. This means the fastest RAM speeds you will hit are going to be with 2 dimms of dual rank ram. If you had a T-topology motherboard, you should be able to achieve the same speeds with 2 vs 4 dimms. The topology refers to how the RAM is connected to the CPU daisy chain has 2 slots that are most efficient, and the next two take a performance hit. The T-topology is equidistant for all 4 slots and should have the same speeds with 2 vs 4 dimms. @@thekids_callmeboss6577 Go with option # 1 (and get the same brand / clock & timings of RAM), it is the best bang for your money. having 4 dimms may reduce the total OC of the ram you can do 3600 MHz vs 3800 MHz, but you will see improved performance with a total of 4 Ranks of ram. Option #2 will cost more and will have no significant improvement (~3-5%) over option #1. If you didn't have 2x8GB ram already, I would recommend option # 2.

I put in a 4x8 32 gig kit in my new rig in 2020. One of the sticks went bad recently. Okay. Out goes two sticks and i still have 16gb dual channel. IF I had two 16gb and lost one, I would still have 16gb but in one channel. So in a way, 4 sticks is better IMHO.....even though I ended up purchasing two 16gb as a replacement. Which may have been kind of dumb but I didn't want to risk mixing ram stick types. I couldn't find an 8gb stick with Cas latency of 16, I would put the other two 8gm strips in to make 48gb , but that's not optimal.

I have question what is your mother support duel channel. So it would be better to get 2x16 so you get 4 ranks and dual channel? ( so everything is in sink) And if your mother board supports quad channel would it better to get 4 single ranks so 4x8? So the end goal is 32gb or ram but for max to in sink with ever other component. I have been so confused about this thanks for video and clarifying the ranks but now how does ranks and channels coincide together? Thanks for only one who can help me

This video is unfortunately wrong. Buildzoid made a video "Why X16 memory chips have less bandwidth than X8 memory chips" that explains it. 4 SR DIMMS =/= quad rank. On a dual channel motherboard, which basically all consumer boards are, it's the same as dual rank memory. The CPU doesn't see DIMMs, it sees channels. 4 SR would be 1 DR per channel for a total of 2 channels.

this is incorrect. if you put in 4x16gb dual rank sticks you get quad rank on consumer desktops which is faster than dual rank (4x8gb single rank or 2x16gb dual rank). the downside ofc is more ranks more imc stress lower max ram speeds.

@@stevetb7777 depends. Let's say a ryzen CPU can run memory at 4500mhz (yes I understand it's way too high over the infinity fabric humour me). And let's say with quad rank it can only run 3933mhz. Well that's okay because the memory on ryzen should only go up to 3800mhz so you get the benefits of quad rank, the fastest rank config on consumer desktops, and the highest 'good' speed for ryzen. On intel however you can normally outclock the benefits of quad rank so normally dual rank of higher speed is the best config. Obviously the board and bios also plays a large factor in what clock speeds you can achieve with quad rank.

Btw are you using a dual slot board? If not is there any particular reason why you want to only populate 2/4 slots of a 4 slot board? I am assuming you are using a consumer motherboard, not like a threadripper or something, with a consumer specific recommended rank cap as well, which if you arent why only 2x64gb instead of 4x64 or maybe even 8x idk. Also if you put in more than 128gbs of ram, you'll go over quad rank per channel and it may not work, or you may get performance deficits. Many boards have a official ram cap of 128gb because of this. Also why do you need 128gb of ram? And for first impressions, I would probably take the 4000 cl18.

It's a difference you'll never notice in anything other than benchmarks. The CPU wouldn't be affected. The CPU simply requests data and then waits for that data. Other things like the memory controller handles actually getting it from the RAM sticks, or storage, if it's not in memory and gives it to the CPU.

Yes and this is why you don’t need 32GB even in new systems. A 4x4 of single rank DIMMs will perform as well as 4x8 ones, given that you aren’t maxing put your 16GB (something I’ve never done). I just installed 4 identical 8GB ram sticks in my Ryzen and it’s running perfectly now, literally night and day faster than before with just 2 of the identical sticks.

They may "perform" just as well, but 32gb of RAM is still 32gb of RAM. Saying that the 4x4gb "perform just as well", so you don't need 32gb, is misleading. When they say the performance is the same they are talking about the RAM's speeds. Not it's capacity. 32gb is still double the amount of RAM as 16gb. So if you need 32gb, you will still need 32gb. Saying, "you don’t need 32GB even in new systems" because "4x4 of single rank DIMMs will perform as well as 4x8 ones", is very misleading. That 4x4 of single rank DIMMs is still only 16gb of RAM.

Could you please make a video (maybe just a common live-talking clip) about dual-rank vs quad-rank memory per channel? I know it's off-topic for most people but, since you suggest 64GB sometimes, I wonder if it would end up being quad-rank per channel. Would quad-rank reduce memory frequency (in a relevant way, maybe for intel since ryzen is capped by fclk)? Decrease gaming/editing performance? Affect CAS latency? Different behavior from Intel and AMD? Would 2x32 be better than 4x16?
