Brett, this is a GREAT video! Thank you for producing it and making it straightforward and clear. I recently did this exact thing myself. But I could not use TP-Link as their routers are not fast enough. I had to use either my Ubiquiti UDM Pro or a "custom" PC with OPNsense so I did both. LOL I tested out both and settled on OPNsense. It handles all of the WAN interfaces and LAN interfaces flawlessly. The Ubiquiti UDM-Pro WAN does go up to 10Gbps (and a slower 1Gbps) so it worked fine but my requirements of routing SOME traffic to the 1G and SOME to the 10G was very difficult using the UDM-Pro. And their CPU cannot handle wire-speed routing w/ACLs. :( OPNsense on a decent chipset can handle multiple 10G WAN without dropping using full ACLs. And eight LAN interfaces without a single drop and full saturation. I placed all of the TP-Link (switches--love them!), AC, and Omada controller behind the OPNsense. Works great! If they would just add SFP+ on their routers with a faster CPU, it would rock.

I have a Firewalla Gold with two WANS hooked up to it. Xfinity 1200/40 and Verizon 5G at 200/10 and the Firewalla does an amazing job at handing it and changing it on the fly. I can even require things to use one or the other even though I have the Verizon set as a failover.

I wish they have SLA that can also consider jitter, latency, and packet loss because if you have 2 WAN links connection and you configured it in Failover mode, the primary link will be used as long as the connection is up and will not failover even when the primary link is degraded. It is also true with load balancing, imagine you are load balancing with a 2:1 ratio with 2 on the primary, even when the primary link is degraded it will still distribute the traffic as is.

If load balancing it's on, and it's always splitting the packages (both active wans) would't the fail over be instantaneous? Or at least never perceived?... Or it still takes a minute to find out that 1 link is broken? That Is really unfortunate considering that 1 ping every second should be cheap and the other connection Is ready
@Doesntcompute2k
@Doesntcompute2k 2 жыл бұрын
Load balancing balances the (outgoing) connections, not the packets. If you (for instance) open up Facebook webpage/App, it forms a connection to the FB servers. This will be on ONE WAN port. If that port goes down, a reconnect has to happen. After all, think of it this way: each WAN port has a unique WAN IP on the Internet. So FB servers know of only one inbound connection from one of the WAN (public) IP. Some apps/services fail over very fast, some slower, some not at all (you have to "sign in again"). Any web pages which are 100% connection-less and not session-based will only need a refresh.

Could this work the same as a splitter? Where you have a fiber line in (I have 2 gigs down, 1 gig up) and have 2 static IP addresses with different sub masks? This would allow me to run 2 separate networks, 1 for the house for normal use, access points, wifi, etc, and the other for a home lab/home business use.

I have this load balancer model, and my issue is that if I disconnect the primary WAN, I lose connection for about 1 minute before it switches to the second WAN port. Is there a way to avoid losing connection, meaning that if the primary connection is lost, the WAN 2 is automatically assigned? For example, to be in a video conference and have the connection remain stable despite disconnecting WAN 1 at that moment.

Question ❓ the Internet speed is only 50mbps so I pick up 2 separate connections. Will this auto use both connections to increase the speed to 100mbps and help the throughput? I hoping that it does because even though they are running fiber it will be while and if it takes to long I might do a 3rd to help it out some more. I'm coming from a 1GB line and was feeling like I stepped back 10 years in time dude.
@RaidOwl
@RaidOwl 2 ай бұрын
Yeah it can do a 50/50 load balanced split so that it’ll use both 50mbps connections evenly. However, this doesn’t mean that a single device will get 100, just that your total coming in will be 100. A single device will still be limited to 50.

This is great for me, since I not only wanted some of the controller-based features (fast roaming) of their WiFi access points, but was also potentially going to purchase yet another dedicated bit of hardware for a multi-WAN setup (in my case, Fiber + cable). It’s really nice to see the Omada router I was looking at supports this out of the box but also with lots of useful features to boot.

@johannesyoung6071
@johannesyoung6071 Жыл бұрын
I don't know that you can. What ive done is make sure that "always link primary" then under mode "only if primary fails". This ensures that devices are only using failover internet connection in the event the primary is down. In this case I believe it doesn't really do any load balancing. Although it still asks for a ratio I don't think it matters. You could also set the ratio to 100:1 just to be on the safe side.

Great video, many thanks. I have question maybe you have the time to answer. I want to install a failsafe system as both of my ISP connections are sometimes weak. My problem is that I don’t have WAN connections. My main internet comes from a LAN cable which I connect to a switch and then distribute it. The LAN gets its data from a rooftop Antenna mounted router (UISP Nanobeam M6 with IP service and all) - I cannot access the configuration of that router. I have a 4G backup sys-tem, which again is a modem/router with 4G card installed (Huawei B2368) , also with IP service. Is there a way to connect both the LAN cables (no WAN but router managed networks) into the Oma-da Dual WAN router and that the router sorts out the double IP issue?
@RaidOwl
@RaidOwl Жыл бұрын
You’ll probably run into a double NAT issue but if you’re okay with that then yeah an Omada router will work. Just plug both of your LAN cables into the 2 WAN ports of the router then let your Omada router handle load balancing and DHCP for everything downstream of that.

I have been using TP-link gear for the better part of 10 years. Before the omada gear i had TL-R470T+ which i used to connect 3 dsl lines and setup a few policies and the router stiches together all the connections and it acts as one connection. The same features are now transferred over to the new omada line of products and i got this ER605 router and i am quite happy with it. I have now one adsl line and 2 4g connections with this router and setup policy to use all wan connections. The good thing with this is all connections are combined as one and if one fails then the other lines take over seamlessly and you don't get dropouts.
