I have been making sock gnomes filling them with rice. I decided to make this kind and guess what! It was the best one I have made and I gave it to my friend who has breast cancer. She told me she would like one with eyes and so this is my first with eyes. I didn’t get around to putting arms or feet but it still turned out great and she loves it. Thank you. From South Carolina

Duane on the stuffing, when you run across bed pillows at the Dollar Store or Wal-Mart, that can me less expensive that a bag of Fiberfill, just cut the pillow open on 1 end and you have a large bag of stuffing. It is the same thing.

I can't believe you hand stitch everything yourself. The blanket stitch was the first stitch my mom taught me about 40 years ago and I love using it when I want to do a decorative stitch. Thank you. The feet with the little toes are made from making my basic shoe and then just glueing small 3/8 inch wood balls on the front to look like toes.

A tip I learned about using rice is to freeze it for 3 days before using it. This kills the weevil bugs and doesn't allow them to hatch once the rice is in the body of the gnome.

Depends on the type of gnome I am making. Bigger gnomes and ones that have legs I have found cones work best for.

I have used both depending on the project and the cost. For most beginners and those making a quantity of gnomes to sell, I would recommend the regular felt squares from Hobby Lobby or Joann's to save money. My wife likes to buy me the premium felt because she uses it for other projects too. You can also get more variation of colors in the premium felt.

Hi Duane, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I use your pattern measurements, glue as you indicated and every time the fold side is higher then the seam side and the gnome leans forward rather then straight. Help

Diane. I can only guess that you are not using the one inch slant up at the base when you are cutting out the body.

I’m ok with that measurement. But I checked again today and noticed the folded side was about 1/4” shorter - 5 3/4” rather than 6”. Would that make a huge difference? Thank you for your help!

What do the dotted lines on the pattern mean saying 1 inch ?

The dotted lines are just showing that the pattern is cut at an upward angle. Place the pattern flat on the fold to cut out. The 1 inch angle makes it so the sides of the body peak in the center.
