Dublin criminal Martin Cahill interviewed by Brendan O'Brien for Today Tonight programme on organised crime, 1988. Cahill was shot dead by republican paramilitaries in Ranelagh, Dublin in 1994, apparently for colluding with loyalist paramilitaries who bombed the Widow Scallan pub on Pearse Street in Dublin.

Living in Dublin in the late 1980s was brilliant. I still remember fondly the smell of damp in the bedsits in Phibsboro and Rathgar when I worked as a Clerical Assistant in the Civil Service, on a take-home pay just 20 quid a week more than the dole. It was perfectly normal to drink pints of Harp.

The text below is the dictionary description of the word 'legend' it is fair/correct to call Martin Cahill a legend as: 1 there are stories told about him 2 He is famous and events in which he was involved are famous. 3 there are inscriptions on Martin Cahill and 4 if anyone knows anything about symbols on maps, it's Martin Cahill! So YES he is a legend!

From an outsiders point of view, i liked martins attitude. I am a catholic and would think that ireland should be united if thats what the majority of the 32 counties want and everything, but still, thats irelands business. His attitude was, fuck the paramilitaries, i am a professional criminal and i only have interest in them if they can make me money or send the screws off my tracks. He was cunning and self centred. But all the great criminals are.

As controversial as he is, it’s hard not to find him funny, eccentric and brazen. He was a product of the inequalities in my city and still has more morals than the evil people behind genocides, Irish church abuse and other deplorable stuff

Let the man RIP and not to say he was a saint but compared to much much younger criminals today he wasn't a bad man by a long shot1and the garda we're so proud of letting the Irish public think tat he couldn't go now we're wit tem knowing but on 4 of August back in 94 all tem so called protectors just happen to have the day of. So no-one was quizzed or arrested for questioning really typical of the irsh corrupted force more like special needs than special force sham on tem all

Like they used a lot of gardai to follow him around and for what?Because of some rich South African's (who initially made his money from exploitation) paintings. They couldve been out hunting down heroin dealers that ruined Dublin

He crossed the IRA by employing loyalists, the loyalists shot an IRA member at a pub in Dublin. He was a dead man walking after that.

Hang on a second Does broadcasting this in `1988 not render every jury case against him in the future useless , because the future jurers would be already biased by this ?? Anyone ?

Don't mind the film, it wasn't that obvious. Its not like they camped out side his house for months and then disappeared on the day of the shooting. If they did that it would be far too obvious and they themselves would probably end up being blamed, they stopped following him closely for a week or two before hand and people knew he wasn't being monitored so they had their chance, I mean who is going to go try shoot him if they thought the police were going to be watching.

The reporter is not so brave, do not flatter him. Plain clothes detectives surround him as he first approached Cahill. Then during the interview they sit in cars beside the reporter. Their is no bravery here. Martin Cahill is an Irish legend.

Martin Cahill was a prolific career criminal. He pulled of a £2 million heist on a jewellers that was too much for IRA to tackle. He was the master of black humour and out smarting the cops 😃👌 Read his book The General of watch his movie. He was killed by another crook who shot him.Rather than paying £500 k loan Cahill had gave him to put him on his feet. The murder is still unsolved to this day 👀 Brendan Gleeson plays him in the movie and is fantastic in his portrayal of him.Even looks like him 😃
