ChatGPT has been a nice complement to my piano lessons. I have conversations with it to learn more about music theory and also how pianos work, and it’s been very helpful. Questions I’ve asked include, “Why is middle C on pianos the frequency that it is?”, “Is there something intrinsically satisfying about the notes used in Western Music or do they just sound good because that’s what I’m used to hearing?“, “Mechanically, how does a Sostenuto pedal work?” At the end of a conversation I ask it to provide me with sources from the web so I can learn more, and also so that I can verify it wasn’t lying to me about anything it said. 😄

Well, I think this is a good case study for an ideal use for it!

YES! I've had fun with this topic and though it can be a really fun brainstorming tool, I had some good chuckles over the wild detours it took me on! Love the way you presented this!

I think piano teachers are fine for now....SimplyPiano and Flowkey are popular but only with people who are not serious about piano. I'm more worried about arts and creative things in general. Soon you won't be able to tell if a photo/video is real. In pop songs, AI can write the entire song and can 'sample' your voice and sing in your voice in a way that you can't. People will start releasing their 'own' music which they didn't write, play or sing and will become successful. Performing live isn't an issue anymore, that's all fake too. It just takes away motivation from the new generation, what's the point of learning graphic design, what's the point of learning composition or music theory if AI can do it in seconds and you can claim it yours. Sad world we live in.

@@pianotips2623 I agree with a lot of what you said about AI, but I’m going to push back on your criticism of SimplyPiano and Flowkey. These apps are reducing the barriers to entry to learning how to play piano. Many people (including me) start out with one of these apps and then graduate to real-life instruction once they get into it more. I think they’re increasing the demand for piano instruction by getting more people hooked on learning how to play.

Yeah, but same was said about paining vs graphical design when the computers started

Well I think there are many reasons may be for folks choosing an app, some are valid and some are misguided. But not all mean they are not “serious”. However, I agree with you about the arts in general. We need regulation on this. AI can only make things because of its source material (ie a human once made a thing!) so if we let it run rampant, humans won’t make things and everything will be derived from pre-AI art. Plus, the writers and artists of the source material were not compensated for this labour that AI is pillaging.

But instead of saying I would not start that way, shouldn't a teacher be able to adapt to the type of student and what kind of teaching fits them. there is not just your way.

Seems like you might be new here! Most of what I talk about on this channel is about adapting to students and putting them first. This turn of phrase really just means “this is not a good way to start” but because I’m Irish, I need to cushion it and make it more polite….even though I’m criticising a non-human. :)
