Thank you for the explanation of the sparg clutch! I'm from the dark side and have a Tuono with sometimes a non-starting issue, where it appears to be battery BUT it's connected to a loud rumble noise (similar to main bearings havings LOTS of play) - which I suspect is sprag clutch issue. I think it's dragging so much power the small battery can't cope and gives up. I can leave it for days and press the start button and it happily fires right up! The noise it meakes I could only describe as a ratchet type roar - when stationary it sounds like big ends have gone - but riding it - sounds like a raw air/induction noise. All very odd but I'm fairly sure it's sprag clutch related.

As I've recently found your channel I've been working through all your videos. Some great stuff here. Makes a change to watch someone that knows what they are doing, not like a lot of 'how to's' on you tube. Just watched some guy in America doing same job on a 999 Duke. He wedged the alternator rotor with a bolt to undo it and the same again to do it up using the small shaft of the cam belt drive gear to lock it all in place. Concerns me that some people watching might do the same. Keep your videos coming, I'm hooked!

excellent video BUT a couple of questions, do you need to take note of the position of any of the parts in relation to one another, like flywheel to crank, or can it only go back together in the correct position for balance or timing marks or anything like that. secondly do you need to lock the engine in position either with the bike in gear relying on compression or with a special tool to hold the crank in position when removing and when replacing the big nut and torquing it back up? lastly where is the best place in the UK to buy the sprag clutch and roughly what should it cost, you mentioned the 80 or so quid for the other part, but what about the price of the gear that wears and the clutch itself? thanks.

If the starter is definitely spinning and the engine not turning it's almost definitely the sprag clutch.

@SuperbikeSurgeryTV5 жыл бұрын
You'll probably have to hit it harder than you think. Do you have it in a vice to hold it still?
@greggiacona2385 жыл бұрын
@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV Thank you for the prompt reply! Are you saying to secure the flywheel in a vice somehow? I wonder if there's a tool that secures to the two opposing holes on the outside of the flywheel? That would be ideal. The other thing that the factory could have done, would have been to give us a few threaded holes only on the boss/flange that would allow the screw out, without having to rotate it! Thank you sir, I'll attempt to vise the flywheel---just don't want to mar or damage it! Greg in Austin TX USA
@greggiacona2385 жыл бұрын
I figured it out! Much easier than rotating the flange slightly (which I could never achieve!): Simply screw in 2 M6-1.00 screws into the flange, opposite sides. Flip it over on the bench, sit the flywheel on a center spacer to allow the flange to be pushed out. (I used a large Delrin frame slider, fits in center only!) Hold flywheel on one side by hand, insert a medium Phillips screwdriver into the flywheel side, corresponding hole opposite the flange screw(s), and TAP hard with a hammer. The flange will slowly work itself out of the flywheel. Keep switching sides to ensure even ejection. Job done!

BMW does not have a car type starter motor. It has pretty much the same system as this.
@SuperbikeSurgeryTV5 жыл бұрын
There are generally two types of starting systems "pre-engaged" type starters and "Sprag Clutch" type. Motorcycles generally use the "Sprag Clutch" type design. The only real exception being BMW who use the "pre-engaged" system on most of there Boxer Engines, including the R45,50,55,60,65,70,80,90,100 and also R850,1100,1150,1200C, R1200GS,RT,R,ST,S. I could probably go on. So as I said - BMW use a different design to this Ducati. The only exception being the Inline BMW engines that copy the traditional Jap design and use the "Sprag Design"
