Its so that the belt can tension correctly, the tool holds the cams in the correct timing place but stops them rotating so you cannot tension the belt unless the wheels are loosened from the cams.

Great video. I do have 1 question though. You have the tool that hold the cam pulleys in place so they can't move when the belt is off. But why do you have to loosen the 3 bolts on each cam pulley (you mention tightening them at 13:58). What is the purpose of loosening and then tightening them back? I see this mentioned in the factory service manual as well. Thanks.
@victorsanchezhezari41893 жыл бұрын
I would say that the tool helps so the timing remains the correct one when tightening the belts. I would like to know what is really the difference... I have never used the tool and i don't know if we are talking about 1 degree or rather a bit more so it really matters in terms of performance and quietness of the engine.
@DesmoWerx3 жыл бұрын
Victor is correct, the tool holds the timing in place to factory standard whilst you tension the belt. The pully bolts are loosened to allow the belt tension to be adjusted whilst not interfering with timing.

Hmm I'm assuming the cam locking jig tools are necessary for accurate cam timing adjustment? As most plebs, we'll me really don't have access to them or if I'm honest need, I'd go along with marking the belts in the tdc positions? And crack on, is this acceptable? And just a quicky is it better to check valve clearances with belts on or off? Thanks for your time.... Regards and great vids👍
@DesmoWerx3 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip, the tools help maintain cam timing whilst you loosen the cam pulley wheels, this helps with making it slightly easier to get the belts on. You can replace belts by marking the wheels, old belt and then transferring the markings to the new belt to ensure it goes in exactly the same place. The tools assist with repeatability which counts if your doing a few of them 😎

He locks the cams with that tool and by loosing the rollers its much easier to fit the belt. Rollers are free from camshaft, so cams stay in place if i am not mistaking..

@@Moosjwz Right. I just watched one of his earlier videos, so he just skipped explaining that step in this one. But I still don't understand why they need to be loosened. Won't the new belts fit with the cam pulleys in the same position?
@DesmoWerx3 жыл бұрын
Hi RC, the tool locks the cams and allows me to loosen the pulley's which helps with getting the belts on far more easily than when they are fixed to the cam in position, there will always be a slight difference between each belt due to tolerances in manufacture so the tool adds with achieving repeatability in installation and belt position. You can also adjust tension without overly affecting the timing. I did explain it when I did the earlier 749 timing video which uses a similar method, apologies I should have added that step in this video as well. That's why I had to retighten the pulleys😊

What a great channel! I have learned a lot from your videos, but I have a question about the cam locking tools. If your cam timing has been changed from factory settings (optimized), and you want to keep that setting, can you still use the cam tools and keep track of the new settings in some clever way? Hi Henrik, you could unlock the tool and relock to the cam timing setting you have on your engine before you remove the belts. The cam positioning heads are locked in with thread lock and a bolt so could be adjusted that way of you wanted.

I'd also like to know where to get the cam locks. All the places I checked only have the cheap plates that suppsedly lock the cams, but there are only gear cutouts for one side, so I don't know how they're supposed to lock both cams. As I understand, the factory tool fits in the "T" of each gear for completely positive locking.

Hi Desmo, so to be clear, the tool you use locks in place the relative camshafts positions against rockers. By unscrewing the pulleys, you release the possible stress generated by the camshafts on the belts (tension of the belt is then solely related to the pressure of the tension pulley). To my understanding, this means, while you are tensioning to the correct frequency, that the position of the cam pulleys are subject to movement. This before you tighten them back. Additionally, both tensions (H and V belt) are different, hence the movement of the not-yet locked-back pulleys too. Am i missing something? Best regards, H.
@DesmoWerx3 жыл бұрын
Hi Hani, Yes the tools lock the cams in place so you can adjust belt tensions with no impact on the timing. If you did not use the tools then when you tension the belt you would marginally move the timing. Ducati now use the same tension for both belts, they used to have different tensions per head on the older belts and bikes.
@hanitaa63233 жыл бұрын
@@DesmoWerx Thanks for the reply sir. I will try another one if you don't mind. I've seen different remarks on shims about their gap - on one side who would prefer resetting to factory default on the tight side for both open and closer like LT SNYDER, - on the other preferring hi spec for opening (0.18) and lo for closing (0.05), taking into account the natural evolution of wear (opening narrowing the gap and closing widening it). > what is your testastretta evoluzione point of view on the topic? > i don't get it, trying to understand this possible evolution of wear, concerning the opening rockers. Since to me this narrowing gap could only be created by valve seat settlement (and this should not happen normally?). Best regards,
