Just test drove the Diavel yesterday and let me say FAST FAST FAST. That said wow it throws off some heat and if you are fairly tall (6'+) you are smashed up against the tank. So while I was there I was checking out the Multistrada and they let me take a ride as well. All I can say is wow! Comfortable seating position, super light, almost as quick as the Diavel with 150 HP, and a pleasure to ride.

@fastlosi Hi again. I also noticed, BMW has something called Trophy Tunisia. Looks like Countries compete on BMW GS Bikes in"" Serious Sand"" So, this makes me laugh when someone in a video says who takes these bikes offroad. Also, there is a event here (US) where its pretty hardcore. I can't remember the name. Total Offroad skills course. The winner wins a GS800 I think. Ducatti makes great products and I'm sure if this is their new course, it will be interesting in the future.

I've ridden both of these bikes, about an hour each. The R1200GS is a big, solid, comfy bike. It just thumps along and if I were looking to ride across the country, this would probably be my bike, but it lacks any real excitement. The MTS1200 however strokes your soul. I squealed like a little girl when I gave it some throttle. The excitement and just pure joy of riding is unmatched. The difference between these two is like driving a Cadillac and a Ferarri. The Cadi is comfy, but not as fun
@jujeefruit11 жыл бұрын
I rode them both, that is the 2013 BMW 1200GS WC and the 2013 Ducati MS. In comparison both bikes kick the ass of their respective predecessors. Against each other however, they are simply different characters, but both fly on road - both easily have more power than needed, and both have excellent brakes, and handling. Suspension wise both just float along smoothly when you want to or have the hard edge when you want that, although the Ducati has more dive on hard braking.
@NZsarge111 жыл бұрын
For purely sealed road riding purposes I'd agree with this assessment but the BMW has a wider riding brief than just sealed roads so I can't see how the Ducati is the better "all rounder".

How about the Kawasaki Versys as an all-rounder, I test rode one of those and thought it was great - comfortable, sporty and can easily take a box and panniers for a bit of touring. Not designed for off-roading but how many of us actually go off-road?!
@MrNithinchandran14 жыл бұрын
@wolfyys Ur absolutely right,Ducati's resonably good on the dirt too.It provides enough performance for an average rider to take it offroad. BMW's F800,HONDA VARADERO 700,YAMAHA TENERE,KAWASAKI KLR 650 r the far better in offroad conditions,lighter&manageable.Ducati is not designed as a direct competator 2 BMW(like SUPER TENERE 1100) but has offered something a little different.Rather than competing for BMW's market share DUCATI has a product that can appeal to a broader & newer customer base.

This is an interesting video, in that it has me thinking that modern bikes, due to modern technology, are easily capable of going about as fast as you would want to go on road without any problems (not like the 'old' days where you could go fast but it was more of a risk). Sure, 0-100 times may vary but just about any bike can go 'safe fast' through a mountain pass. So, I am thinking that for adventure bikes its time to ignore their 'on road' ability and focus on 'off road', thats where its at.
@yedfasyork188910 жыл бұрын
I have owned both the GS and the Multistrada. The GS is too heavy and the technology is too dated. The Multistrada is more fun to ride. It is lighter and the performance is better. BMW need to up their game. Now their RR, on the other hand, is SUPERB!
@StuHNomadBiker10 жыл бұрын
The GS is not meant to be a "performance bike" these are two different animals. My 2013 GS has TC and ABS, ESA etc so I don't see how a Multistrada is way more advanced? horses for courses as we say here, go with what you like most, GS has been the best selling big bike in the UK ( and parts of Europe ) for the last few years .
@asturiancetorix255210 жыл бұрын
IMAO both play different markets. The Multistrada is a RR bike on the shape of a asphalt-trail. Like the new Tracer, and others. We´ll see the new BMW trail with the S1000RR engine, so that´s the proof of the existence of this "new" kind of "tall sporty bikes", Very fast, very powerful. I owe one, think the GS was not designed to be fast, but safe, easy to ride, with plenty of torque at medium rpm. On the older 1200 air cooled I can use that 115NM torque to ride comfortably on the public roads (with speed limits), using the benefits of a high torque engine on low or medium rpm´s.

Sorry MCN but got to agree with most peoples comments regarding taking the Ducati "off road". You mentioned the smaller front wheel was better for "turning in", but what about when in 12 inches of mud?
@shane313710 жыл бұрын
seriously, you take two 'adventure' bikes, one of which has a dirt pedigree as long as your arm by the way, you then take them on a touring ride and you declare the 'fastest' one the winner, no off-road tests, no hard core dirt roads, no (real equipment, sundries, extras etc)comparisons what a joke, the Ducati would fall apart on serious dirt roads and its more expensive! This has to be the worst side by side 'adventure' comparison test I've ever seen.
@wolfyys14 жыл бұрын
@allardnine the ducati only has the competition beat on handling and looks. I very much doubt it would beat them on build quality, reliability and ruggedness when going on a real adventure.

@AJB074, It would be great to see the Duc & the BMW have a real go against each other just to see how they handle?! The Duc certainly has some sweet gear in & around it but I'm a BMW man myself but I do like the Duc's as well, as they say if you want an all-rounder then the Duc is the one to go for. Speaking of LWR, I'm reading the book, if you haven't read it yet then do so, it'll give you more on what went down! Wonder what it would have been like if they had the KTM's...Mmm?! Cheers.
@rob204912 жыл бұрын
Its not complicated Ducati is more of a street bike that is a good tourer, has a nice upright comfortable position that does a decent job offroad (half-ass job). GS is is focused on offroad sport touring that has a good road handling characteristics, and its native habitat is anything but flat surface. I have the bimmer, king of offroad in this class, period. Good analogy is like comparing apples to oranges, Ducati cannot claim victory on all fronts neither does BMW
@dahveed28414 жыл бұрын
A good review. It would have been better if you had taken both motorcycles on some gravel roads and tested them there as well. Both of these bikes are designed for that, so it would have been a fair test. Then I feel the BMW's 19 inch front wheel would have been a plus, not a minus. I bet the manufacturer ask you not to take it off road. Still, you could have at least mentioned it in the review. How do you think off-road touring would change your picks?

The reviewer said "for an all-rounder, it has to be the Ducati". That's an interesting take. And yet I can't see anyone seriously considering setting off across the third world on a Ducati. That would be lunacy. The GS is made and proven to take anything you can throw at it.

As far as owning a Ducati, no thank you, I like riding too much to own a bike that's as hard to service as most Ducks are. Having ridden both bikes, I have to agree, there is no way the DUC can be considered an "all rounder" compared to the GS. No way you can sit in the saddle for 12 plus hours. The panniers have the construction quality of plastic lunch pails and I just would not want to take it down anything rougher than a gravel driveway. It is an ergonomically comfortable sport bike with plenty of cool technology and a shit eating grin fun engine but not what I would consider an "all rounder".

I agree with you 100%.....but IMO the fact that the multi doesn't come with the option of different wheels and tyres means it's not really suited as a true all rounder. My problem isn't so much with the bike - it's great - as much as with the claim made by this video that "the king is dead" ....Now without a doubt the Ducati will beat the BM in some things but I wouldn't dream of taking the italian here... do video search "R 1200 GS vs Super Tenere - ADB & Riemann go outback"

@buzzkillor .....Also, just as another consideration..I drew some water into the engine of my BMW R1100gs last weekend while crossing a stream....it took me all of about 5 minutes to pop off the lead, take out the plug, crank it over to expel the water, give the plug a quick clean and screw it back in...on both sides. That would have been a much bigger PITA with the Duc.

Engine wise Ducati wins. But, an engine doesn't head off road to gravel and trail, the whole bike does. Ducati has to fix several deficits in at least one variant of the 'strada to tap the large ADV bike market. It really needs a bigger, 19" front wheel. The wattage of electricity generated has to be seriously upgraded. And, an option made for a factory lowered frame to get seat height down. At 850mm a lot of riders like me are forced to one of the 3 BMW ADV bikes that have this option.

@eimpossibile i agree there is no competitors for the trip (they did ask KTM to provide the bike the KTM refused). but it's still very impressive that the bmws didnt have any major mechanical problems apart from crack frame cuz they dropped/crashed it so many times. and to me reliability is the most important aspect of an all-around bike. KTM and ducati fall short in that category. but thats just my opinion =)

The only thing that was actually compared on this video was the size of the panniers. How about: Dirt road? Off road? Wet road? Brake? The BMW will outclass the Ducati offroad. And the MTS is better on normal roads. It will depend on what the buyer is planning to do with the bike. Not everyone goes arround the world on his bike. I know 3 guys that own a GS and non off them does "long way around" rides ;-) Overal I think the Ducati will win a full test on points but it will be close. My MTS touring should arrive within 2 week. Can't wait !
@BBosman9214 жыл бұрын
@FTFsystem For the 'normal' person any bike will do, but each bike goes a bit more to a different side, Ktm aims more at off-road/adventure touring, BMW more at normal touring and slow off-roading, and the Ducati is more sporty then the others, but to the normal (without the experience these guys have) person with the same tires these bikes wont differ a lot. I would personally pick the KTM 990 Adventure R because I do some offroading from time to time... (but this just reflects my opinion)

I have to agree with MrMadbiker1 here. I really like MSN motorbike reviews, they have been very influential in helping me form a view about one bike or another. But this review completely misses the mark about this type of bike - riding these fantastic endro/adventure bikes around the fantastic paved roads of northern Italy is irrelevant. Far better to load up each bike with about 100kg of gear and go off-road, up hill and down dale, through a couple of rivers, and then express an opinion.

Lots of time spent on this (apples and oranges, really) debate in our neck of the woods. Fact - the Duc is stunning on road, but double fact, it's a warranty disaster. Read the Boards. The one I'm thinking of has had legion warranty returns to the workshop, and dread to think what will be the costs once its out of warranty. Three rear shock units, both cylinder heads, and now it's eaten it's gearbox. Weeks off the road, for a brand new bike.

The Ducati is more similar to the Triumph Tiger 1050i than to the GS. They will prefer to test it with a GS - cause this result is more interesting for clients - cause the GS is the Top-Seller in this case... Of course you cannot drive with the Multistrada on same roads like a GS - not a problem to mount offroad-profiles on a BMW - but the GS can drive on all roads a Multistrada does. .. so its everybodies own choice what he prefers. About all this dont forget: BMW answers with a new GS ;-)

@emartinezdev So the Multistrada is a better road bike than the GS? Well done, lets put the Multistrada into the list of road bikes that are better on road than adventure bikes. It depends on what you want in your bike, these things are all about compromise, road for off-road, power for weight and so on but in my opinion the Multistrada has compromised so much of its off-road ability that it no longer deserves to be considered in the 'for off-road' class, any more than a GS500 should be.

@SplashDamageNL You must be joking. No other way of looking at what you wrote. The GS bikes have been a legend for 30 years for precisely what you wrote. Just buy any motorbike magazine with a serious off-road test (rivers, dirt, mud, rocks etc) and you'll realise what you are saying. And that's not even getting the Adventure Edition, which basically has only a few upgrades.
