This is a step by step on replacing the timing belts on a 1999 Ducati ST4. This is a revised version of this video. I made some errors in the first one and I felt I needed to correct it so the job can be done the right way!! Apologies to all who commented. Shout outs to "bradthebikeboy" and "Eclidean". Thanks for the CORRECT info.
Belts can be bought here: www.ebay.com/itm/DAYCO-TIMING-BELTS-FOR-DUCATI-ST4-916CC-748-748CC-PAIR-SET-093RP170H-941030/252836399258?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

Love your video, and your small story about your dad. Thanks a lot. I use a small long screwdriver to check the top dead end of the compression stroke and in 6th gear crankshaft rotation is somewhat easier. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Love the video brother and I’m glad the universe brought me to it. I’m planning on buying my fathers 2001 st4 for the sake of keeping it in the family and so I do It with intentions of keeping the lineage on. I stumbles across your videos after doing some research on the bike and I feel as though nothing could be more perfect than to buy my dads bike. I love the story behind your dads toolbox and how it inspired a creativeness into you… god bless you and your family

Fantastic instructional!!!. I'm blown away by the 110Hz trick. I'm a lifelong muso so this is my language. Love it. You realise of course that 110Hz is 1/4 of A=440Hz, the international standard for musical pitch. Uncanny. Who would have thought?

ok glad we cleared that one up, can get a bit confusing but the word clockwise cleared it up. i always try to understand why manufacturers do certain things. btw got onto your channel by your cb750 series which then made me go out and buy a gl 1100 goldwing that hadn't gone for twenty three years and restored it but using gl 1000 fenders with a bit of adaptation to the rear. would have liked a cb750 but my budget wouldn't stretch to it. keep on hackin, love it.

It actually is straight forward. The valves is not very difficult either. Can be done with tools from the 50's :) My KTM LC8 is way more complicated. Ducati's are great! 916 was my first love in bikes.

You finally made it into the upper echelon of bike building with that Ichiban award- congratulations! LOL! Seriously though, I've been following this build and I just want to say thanks for putting in the time and effort to film it all. I'm not planning on doing anything similar but it's been interesting to watch. I will say the one thing I do find VERY useful in this build is how you measured your belts! I've got an 08 Hypermotard 1100s and will be checking my belt tension your way instead of the Allen wrench method. I've never had any luck with the tuner apps but I've never seen it done before, either in person or online so seeing it here gives me direction on the proper way of checking the tension instead of guessing. I'm not convinced it makes a huge difference in longevity but I might as well do it right and this will help me tremendously! Finally, the bike itself looks fantastic- you did a great job! I'm not sure if you're done with this bike or if there's more, but I'll be looking forward to your next video of whatever you tackle.

Thank you! On the belt tension, be sure that the cylinder you're adjusting is at Top Dead Center!! I actually made a slight error on the vertical cylinder and didn't rotate it far enough. (I went back in and corrected this the other day and installed new Fuji style lock nuts) You can remove the spark plug and insert a long skinny screwdriver or a wood dowel down in the cylinder and watch it as it rises up to TDC with the piston. Get it as close to TDC as you can while turning the rear tire with the transmission in first gear. If you go past a little it's OK but it's important that you don't turn the engine backwards to line it up. The belt has to be loaded in the forward direction. That way, the side with the adjuster is NOT the side that's loaded up with extra tension. Good luck!

22:00 plucking with a guitar tuner for the win! Also, I inherited my father in laws tools and I have a "mystery" drawer. When I come across a job I don't have the right tool for, I go rummaging around and usually come out with something, muttering "so that's what this is for" to myself.

About finding the correct belt torque, if you will. Should you not set each cylinder at TDC for each check for correct belt tightness? If not, it will give different values because one cylinder will have valves and valve cams under pressure going out to the belt. Just a thought though. ..

You are absolutely right. After uploading I was informed that I failed to rotate the vertical cylinder far enough to be at TDC. I should have rotated another 90 degrees.

Dean Segovis At 24:25 you are turning the crankshaft 90 degree counter clockwise to your red mark. Could you try to explain what is wrong? Should you have turned the crankshaft 180 degrees counter-clockwise?

Thanks for the video. I'm into my first belt change on a Ducati 749 and am looking for all the help I can get. A comment and question. When you remove the vertical belt (@ 12:55) you do not mark this belt with paint, and then when you replace it (@ 14:37) you refer to the horizontal belt and then show a vertical belt with marks you mention you copied. I am assuming you copied these from the horizontal belt you marked and are assuming both belts are the same. Are they? My research so far with my Testastretta engine says to mark both belts separately as they are not the same. (Just in case anyone else is trying to apply your video to a slightly different bike.) Thanks again for the video.

LOL - still watching the updated video - (Im sorry, you just cant win can you Dean? LOL) the cam drive gear turns at HALF crank speed, so your original mark you made at "180*" was 90 degrees on the crank.......... (cams operate at HALF engine speed, every TWO crank revolution is ONE in those cam sprockets.......) BEST way to tell if youre TDC on back cyl is a LONG thin screwdriver or dowel or smooth rod in the spark plug hole

@andrewhansen4179

There is a modification you can do to the dry clutches that reduces the amount of clutch rattle. Just check the internet for the recommended mod. I think it's called the Ducati "quiet clutch mod" and it's almost as simple as pulling the clutch plates and adding one additional plate. I did this mod to my ST4 and it really helps, without totally eliminating the sweet music of a dry clutch. I like a dry clutch vs. a wet one where all the clutch debris is entering the oil. Just my 2 cents.

so if the rotation is the same, it means one side is trying to screw itself in and the other side is trying to screw itself out. hence the pin on one side only.

I have an ST2 with just 9000 miles. Belts r recommended at 10K but with your guitar tuner trick at 12Hz y not just "tune" my original belts? The valves just c tightness, not "newness"...
@andrewhansen4179
@andrewhansen4179 5 жыл бұрын
Belts are relatively cheap and the process easy enough. Just take your time and be thorough. The belt change process for the 2 valve motor is easier than the 4 valve motors. An overused belt is a troublesome condition. The belt could break and mess up your motor. I've run my belts up to 12k miles without incident but that is max for me.
