Hey Uri, I didn't realize you had those bikes :-) I got the first 1299 SL 3 years ago - great bike! I too wondered why the V4 SL costs SO MUCH MORE! Thanks for sharing the video. Btw, the exhaust on the 1299 FE is quite a bit different than the 1299 SL. First they pounded a couple of dents in it so it would clear the kickstand and larger rear tires with tire warmers. After my ride at Mugello the technician put warmers on the tires and I pointed out to the engineers that the tire warmer was melting on the header due to the clearance of less than 10 mm between the 1299 SL Akrapovic SBK exhaust header and the 200/60 Pirelli slick, which is only 3 mm taller in ride height than the stock 200/55 tire - OMG! Also the end cans have the tops blocked off so the exhaust won't melt the turn signals. Miss seeing you out at the track. Hope all is well with you.

Try to have a look on the V4 Superleggera, remove the ehaust cover and look at the part where the swingarm is closer to the exhaust collector. On my bike has turned green and brown due to the heat.

Nice video mate! I got my 1299 SL 3-ish years ago and I still love it! I didn't bother to get the V4 SL because of the extra money (plus I needed a comfortable daily rider) so I got a V4S instead! But if I win the lottery some day, then I'll definitely get a V4 SL if I can find one :)

My friend just got a V4 SL but couldn’t afford the full price tag so he sold his V4 Speciale and I was the one who bought it off him! So at this point I don’t feel the need to get a V4 SL whilst having a V4S, 1299 SL and V4 Speciale but you can never had to many bikes 😉

@TouchUpDirect
@TouchUpDirect 3 жыл бұрын
Both are very raw, this is for sure. But there is a huge torque difference between the two; the 1299 is a monster in this way. Also, the 1299 feels much smaller and narrower...like there's nothing but a motor between your legs. The V4, on the other hand, just seems much better controlled. Like the focus was on aero and electronics that create better control. And it's wicked, wicked fast at the top of the RPM range.

The reason for the different colour carbon swing arm is Kevlar. It's woven into the carbon pre preg in high impact areas. Common in the motorsport world.

Hey, Uri. Probably not really something to be shown for too long, but the tires on the V4 SL are very interesting as they are a completely different variation of the Super Corsa's. Next time you're in the garage, look at the sidewall of the 1299 Super Corsa's and then take a look at the V4's. The V4 almost has this "bowed" out aspect to them, which I take is derived from their Slicks. Just thought it was something cool to add.

How would you be able to evaluate a cost differential without an engineering metric? Tooling cost, engineering design time, design complexity, failure margins, etc etc. the V4 side fairing tooling cost alone is an order of magnitude higher than the 1299. That aside, the cost ratio of the 1299S/V4S is the same as the 1299SL/V4SL. PS Ducati uses vacural casting processes.
@TouchUpDirect
@TouchUpDirect 3 жыл бұрын
Of course there is an engineering metric question. However the end goal is a consumer product and therefore the consumer value is what I was attempting to explain. I simply purchased the bikes, I did not design, engineer, or manufacture them. And you can bet that the #1 goal of any consumer product is consumer value. Every other aspect is secondary, including all engineering. After all, if no one will purchase the product, what’s the point of making it?
@FancyAnimal
@FancyAnimal 3 жыл бұрын
@@TouchUpDirectyou’re not following. You can’t evaluate engineering content based on primary facie consumerism, since the engineering is what ultimately drives cost. This isn’t a can opener. Do you understand how classic laminate theory applies to carbon fiber epoxy structures, or the increased complexity of how the plies need to be kitted to properly lay in the tool? How about the side vents that need to be bench trimmed or the complex curves of the tooling for the side fairing? Balancing the cams to higher order harmonics for the extra revs? Tuning the twist harmonics in the swing arm? Induction hardening time for the hotter camtrain? Stochastic material limits? Coding time for the new electronics? The new electronics hardware engineering? You’re talking about the resin coloring and surface finishes on an Apollo rocket. Lol.
@TouchUpDirect
@TouchUpDirect 3 жыл бұрын
@@FancyAnimal I’m aware you understand a great many things about engineering and you want it to be known. Things I won’t pretend to understand, nor desire to. But rest assured I am following precisely your point in this conversation.
@TouchUpDirect
@TouchUpDirect 3 жыл бұрын
@@FancyAnimal oh, forgot to add...engineering is only a factor in driving costs. Otherwise this bike or any other would have zero common parts with a standard V4, or any Ducati. What really drives the cost is how much engineering can be offered for a target price. Do you believe if the motorcycle was $200k it would be identical to its current spec sheet? How about $500k, $1M, and so on. Willingness to pay trumps all. Engineering is only permitted to paint within cost dictated lines. Great discussion though, thanks for chining in!

The R is a $40k motorcycle, as I’m sure you know. There’s deals to be had out there and whatnot, but just based on MSRP, it’s $40k. Normal service is just like any other Panigale...a few hundred bucks a per year until a Desmo service. I wouldn’t anticipate any accelerated mechanical wear since I’m not racing it or even doing many track days on it.

@@TouchUpDirect So my question is I am hearing that the engine has to be rebuilt at a certain amount of miles is that true
@TouchUpDirect
@TouchUpDirect 3 жыл бұрын
Not for normal use, that rebuild schedule is only for a race bike or dedicated, hard used track day bike. I’ve seen this question come up previously but there is no merit to it. I think it’s mentioned in the owners manual about an accelerated maintenance schedule but for only bikes used very hard. It is NOT like the BMW S1000 carbon framed non-street legal bike that needed to be rebuilt every few thousand miles.
