If one can find it, there was a BBC-PBS series in the 80's titled "Treasure Houses of Britain" that visited Chatsworth, the Cavendish family home in one segment. Deborah and her husband were still the reigning Duke and Duchess residing in the house and to see them both in conversation about the house and its collections and the management of the estate was very interesting. The late Duchess even exhibited a bit of wry humor and her high-bred manner of speech lent another degree of comic relief when she spoke of some renovations she made to the (vast) gardens, specifically a "crinkle crankle" wall and border. Being American, I have no opinion on the vestiges of English nobility, sufficed to say she and her late husband seemed like very nice people who'd experienced a lot of change in the world of the great country houses but had made a success of the estate supporting itself and who took their responsibilities of being knowledgeable, personable stewards of Chatsworth seriously. I think there may have been a follow up show featuring the workings of the estate's business under the current Duke and Duchess, produced long enough ago that Deborah was still alive but living in her "cottage" by then.

You would enjoy the books of Nancy Mitford, who was the Duchess’s sister. Wry very british humour 😍These are a breed of English people who weren’t given to exaggeration, who were (& are)true ‘ladies and gentlemen’, taking life’s little knocks squarely on the chin, never complaining or grumbling about any of it; unfailingly calm, graceful, elegant and gracious. Their speech is considered, articulate ( a rare thing in this age, when you can’t tell if they are actually speaking English, for the amount of slang and profanity in their ‘conversation’). It is a great pity there seems to be such an antipathy to them and almost active measures to disadvantage these people, while encouraging Russian oligarchs who can pay their way into the HOL. Anyway, I hope good breeding, in every sense of the words, will survive all of the stresses of this garish 21st century..

Had President Kennedy's sister Kathleen lived (killed in a plane during the 2nd world war), Deborah would never have become the duchess of Devonshire. Kathleen was the one married to the eldest son of the duke at the time. Unfortunately both Kathleen and her husband were killed in two seperate plane crashes.
@StrictlyMystic6 жыл бұрын
Kathleen's death didn't affect the inheritance of the title - her husband's did. William Cavendish was killed four months after marrying Kathleen Kennedy. Although he was heir to the dukedom, he predeceased his father. Andrew Cavendish became heir when his older brother died.

Just as was said, Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy never became the duchess because her husband died before his father did. So even if she had been alive, she wouldn’t have gotten the title. It still would’ve gone straight to Debo’s husband.

She was a real Lady! RIP! Noblesse oblige is a French phrase literally meaning "nobility obliges". The Dictionnaire de l’Académie française defines it thus: ⁕Whoever claims to be noble must conduct himself nobly. ⁕ One must act in a fashion that conforms to one's position, and with the reputation that one has earned. The Oxford English Dictionary says that the term "suggests noble ancestry constrains to honorable behavior; privilege entails to responsibility." Being a noble meant that one had responsibilities to lead, manage and so on. One was not to simply spend one's time in idle pursuits.
@ginnyappleton63633 жыл бұрын
Hurrah! Very well said. This is something that is SO misunderstood by most people. Of course there are some aristocrats who behave badly (the only ones we really hear about) but by far the majority live low-key lives and do a great deal of public service. We don't hear about it because these people view it as crass and self-serving to be 'seen' doing good (unlike celebrities) Rather, they see their own privilege as an obligation to give back, and they do it diligently, quietly and without expectation of recognition.

@joshuataylor608710 жыл бұрын

Joshua Taylor The explanation is not fully correct: a dowager simply means a widow - when a peer (or even a King or an Emperor) dies his wife, as a matter of fact, becomes the dowager, regardless of her son's marital status or even if she has a son. This was true, for example, of HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother who was technically the Dowager Queen, even though she preferred to be called the Queen Mother and was granted this honorific by HM. Within most European systems of aristocracy and gentry, a woman's social rank and position (sorry, I didn't make up the rules!) is determined either by her father's or her husband's, never (or exceptionally rarely) by her son's (or daughter's). A better example: when Queen Victoria ascended to the throne her Aunt Queen Adelaide, the widow of William IV became the Dowager Queen. When her husband was alive she was Her Majesty The Queen, after he died she became Her Majesty Queen Adelaide, the Dowager Queen. It's not as confusing as it may seem. Another example of correct usage, though fictional, can be found in Downton Abbey: the wife of the Earl of Grantham is the Countess of Grantham while his mother is the Dowager Countess of Grantham though they would both be addressed as Lady Grantham (by their social equals) or Your Ladyship/Milady (by social inferiors)

I am a grandson of a Venetian noblewoman but, more to the point, I served as a valet to His Grace The Duke of Bedford for nearly fifteen years. Some people say it is snobbish but the aristocracy is my passion - my "hobby", for lack of a better word. I am not eager to "keep up with the Kardashian", but love to know who's who in the what's left of the European aristocracy. That's me! If you ever have any questions or just want to talk about such things, do not hesitate to contact me. BTW, I personally met Their Graces The (late) Duke and Duchess of Devonshire on several occasions. He was a proper "toff", as they call them in the UK, a stiff upper lip. broomstick up his ... well, you know. Despite it all, a proper Gentleman. But The Duchess! Oh my! A true old world lady, beautiful, extravagant, larger than life. They do not make them like that any more, I can tell you that!

Kathleen's husband was killed in the war, actually.
@williamevans94265 жыл бұрын
Yes, Kathleen (nee Kennedy, sister of JFK) married the heir to the dukedom, the Marquess of Hartington, in the UK in 1944. Sadly, the Marquess was killed in France only four months after the marriage. Some time later, Kathleen became romatically involved with the Earl Fitzwilliam but, while flying from Paris to the Riviera in 1948, their light aeroplane crashed, killing them both. Joseph, her father, was the only Kennedy to attend her funeral, which was arranged by the Cavendish family (i.e., the Devonshires).

Manchester-born writer, CA MacRae, met with Carolyn Reynolds, Executive Producer of Coronation Street over a script she wrote in 2004. Inspired by Carolyn's positive comments C.A. MacRae began research years later when life enabled her. So if you love Downton Abbey and conspiracy theories, then you will love C.A. MacRae's Gemini Complex, The Cabal: After the final demise of the Cathars at Chateau Mount Montségur in the south of France in 1244, a heroic rescue by a Knights Templar took place. Six hundred and fifty-three years later a murder and spate of suspicious deaths of the clergy become linked in the south of France. Flo’s first day (10th November 1918) at Chandringham doesn’t work out quite how she imagined. A bright but humble farm girl finds herself thrust into the upper echelons of society. Rather than being trained in the everyday tasks of a maid, she’s told she needs to leave her old life behind and immerse herself in the life of the aristocracy, as Lady Mary Tavistock. Her world is turned upside down, Flo realises she’s not the person she’s always thought she was, and to make matters worse she finds out her life is endangered. In order to make sense of who she really is and what her purpose in life is, she’s sent to Switzerland to meet others of her kind. The Gemini Complex, The Cabal is the first book of a trilogy. It's going to be released later this year.

You obviously didn't listen. Kirsty is a BBC left wing bitch and you are probably just as bad.
@rohansrider8 жыл бұрын
You are talking rot. Kirsty asked some searching questions and the Duchess handled them all honestly and to the best go her limited ability and with a certain aplomb; she came across well. There was nothing wrong with the interview from either quarter. Why do you think Kirsty is a BBC left wing bitch"? People have called the Duchess stupid, but for an aristocrat she was more self effacing than many I have heard .

Kirsty rules! ok? I think Her Grace enjoyed the interview. Disrespectful - I don't think so and she did say 'your grace' at the end - most unheard of these days!

Obviously no excuse for Fascism but it is typical of the double standard of today that Debo was invariably asked about Diana and Unity but never about Jessica who was an unrepentant Stalinist. Debo was supposed to be a non reader but after Nancy she ended up being the best writer of the sisters. Jessica was a good writer but like most lefties a bit too didactic. Nancy's novels and Debos books are a delight to read
@michaelmontagu3979 Жыл бұрын
Evelyn Waugh sent her a copy of his book about John Knox. When it arrived she read the note that said, To darling Debo. You won't find a word in here to offend your protestant sympathies. She read no further. A friend picked it up and found that it entirely blank.
@mikegalvin9801 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelmontagu3979 Of course if you believe Nancy their father only read one book - White Fang by Jack London - and pronounced it so good he saw no need to read any others. She told a very funny story about dragging him to see Romeo and Juliet. He was fascinated but two thirds of the way through as he was grinding his teeth over some development it occurred to her he was the only one in the audience with no idea how it was going to end.
@michaelmontagu3979 Жыл бұрын
@Mike Galvin I believe that is probably true. Farve in Love in a cold climate is based, of course, on her father. He too goes to Romeo and Juliet, saying that 'of course it was all the fault of that damned padre. Bet he was an RC. That nurse was a dismal old bitch too.' That sounds very like him.
