Not gonna lie, I usually believed artists when they say an incredibly detailed piece took them only three or four hours. The pieces currently on my pages that I'm most proud of typically took me five days at a minimum to complete, partially because I have ADHD and some days I can't maintain a consistent focus past the four hour mark (which equals out to about twenty overall hours spent on single pieces, which I think is probably lowballing it a bit). I do have days where I burrow in with hyper focus when I'm especially passionate about a project. Ironically those pieces take me even _longer_ because I decided on a whim to add in a design element I'm not accustomed to drawing. I end up obsessing over getting it _just right_ and I'll spend, like, sixish hours per drawing session (time for self-care explicitly not included). My instinct is to give everyone the benefit of the doubt so I didn't conceive people would or could be lying about how long a piece takes them to do. I usually chalk it up to me having ADHD. Usually when I hear, "Oh, it only took a few hours!" I do end up feeling kind of bad about my skill level. I'm a hardcore revisionist and I usually end up feeling like I should be skilled enough to get lines and proportions right on the first or second go. It helps to hear that maybe, actually, people aren't always truthful about that number. But also how am I supposed to accurately gauge what is too long a time to take on art? Because I'm sure there's some things that I'm doing that could be done more efficiently to tighten up the time I take on aspects of a piece.
@DuchessCelestia
@DuchessCelestia 2 жыл бұрын
i completely understand where you’re coming from, and felt the same for a really long time. honestly, i don’t think there’s a consistent, always-applicable minimum of time that a piece of art should take, but at least viewing those “time spent: 1.5 hours” descriptions with a grain of salt helped me give myself more credit for taking longer. i also think speed will come with time - for some of my first industry contracts and commissions, I took 5-8 months just to finish a few pieces, which would now take me a couple weeks at most. as your comfort level grows with what you’re drawing, the time it takes you will gradually diminish - not to the unrealistic extent of taking a couple hours per piece if you’re dealing with ADHD and high attention to the piece’s detail (which i strongly relate to), you will see progress in time. the best advice i can give is to try to cut yourself some slack on how long you take with it - you’re not alone, and im confident that most artists (regardless of what they claim) are in the same boat, at least to some extent. ❤️💙

@@DuchessCelestia I do want to cut myself slack! Though I also want to at least start trying to gain some followers so I'm also worrying about how I'm going to handle managing the time it takes between uploads. I also have whole weeks where I don't feel up for drawing because I have an IT day job during the week days. The past few weeks have been really stressful. =w=;; I do feel though that slowly I am becoming more comfortable with how I draw so that helps a lot.

I’m nearly 30 and just got into drawing a year ago (digitally- I can’t draw on paper) and every day I see improvements esp after a major art block- whenever I see ANY art I like- especially where you can see the effort, no matter how “bad” it is or the age of the artist I will always leave a “keep up the hard/good work you’re doing great” with a comment about something I like about it or something I think they did really well with in the art - I do this because 1- costs nothing to be kind and encouraging, 2- if you point out something that’s done really well or that’s the best part then that lets the person know “hey this method really works for you keep working with it” and 3- acknowledging that they worked HARD and put in the effort and time is giving them the credit for what they actually did and that it shows, that it didn’t magically appear from thin air. I don’t do well with criticism (I can take suggestions and stuff but I have my reasons for not being ok with criticism) I do best with encouragement also who doesn’t like to get a nice comment when they post.

I love how I agree with some points you made and others not fully! We all have own opinions and shouldn't be afraid to talk about it publicly as long as we're not hurting other people. And even have discussions about it. I grew up in a "if you have nothing good to say keep your mouth shut" family, and I realized its wrong the older I grew. Even they do say bad things about other people, just not at their face. But honestly, if you are respectful about your opinions, then go tell them. Dont talk about the person behind their back! Im so tired of listening to family members talking shit about family members but being UwU nice to them when they talk to them. It just all seems so toxic! When I finally did say something to the person I had a trouble with /respectfully/, my family told me it was disrespectful, and I was like, "you think talking about other people behind their backs is respectful?". They just kept quiet.

I corrected him by saying the shadow would be either way and he started to shut up and then he went on and I repeatedly told him "this is just a sketch" If I didn't ask I didn't ask, and it's not like this was the final drawing so he was doing the most for nothing.

Your point about toxic positivity, and the comment section feeling like an echo chamber, is also really true for fan fiction. I know that writing is a different sort of art than what is talked about in this video, but I just immediately thought of it when you brought up that particular pet peeve. Everyone in the comments are always constantly praising the writer to high heaven, even calling their work masterpieces multiple times. Or really just having people “screaming” in their comments about how absolutely amazing their writing is, and how the characterizations were genius and whatnot, which gets so damn frustrating when you just wanna hear what people thought of the fanfic (story, plot, characters etc.), without them only pointing out the good stuff or sugarcoating it. Now I’m not a writer myself, but I’ve seen some authors actually request constructive criticism in the author’s notes, like “hey guys, I’m trying to improve my writing so any advice or constructive criticism would really help me out!” And all the comments are full of is just people gassing up the writers ego, to the point where they’ve had to state the same message multiple times in the next chapters, and even getting a little annoyed by the lack of response. Like, they’re probably writing on these fanfic websites to get better and improve, while also having an actual audience of non biased readers to get feedback from. But all of it just falls apart if the audience isn’t willing to drop the act, and actually help when the authors are asking for it 🙄

Complaining about not getting enough engagement from art used to be a huge issue on tumblr years back. I saw so many posts, even comics basically shaming users who LIKE the art but don't reblog. They made it sound like liking but not reblogging was essentially a punch in the gut because "likes do nothing." It's true that likes don't do a whole lot for the algorithm compared to reblogs, but it just feels so arrogant and self-entitled to expect that from someone instead of appreciating the interaction at all. If people aren't engaging with your art they way you want them to, it's really not their responsibility to do so.
@lulub517
@lulub517 Жыл бұрын
Yes this! I hate the whole "If you don't reblog you bad" shit and makes me automatically not want to share their art and even block them. I'm just happy when people like my art, just because may not get the engagement vs a reblog, doesn't mean I automatically deserve one. Also roblogging takes up space on your own blog where I'd rather have people engaged on my page for my original stuff rather than rebloggged stuff, it feels like cheating when I get followers from other people's art via a reblog, because even though the original creator is there behind the reblog, it's not super obvious sometimes and sometimes I've found myself following the reblogger instead of the original artist because I wasn't paying proper attention. Just let people choose how they want to react to your work, whether it's a reblog, love or a comment.

A couple years ago I opened commission, a good handful amount of people commissioned me. Something I did and still do is take full payment upfront and finish commission within the span of a month. However a few days after opening commissions one of my sibling got drunk one day and snapped my laptop in half. I took a picture of my broken laptop, I wanted to tell everyone it broke with evidence but the way it broke I would have to lie to them how it broke since no one knew of my physically abusive family. Instead I only tweet out about it and everyone who commissioned me understood, two of them were kind enough to let me keep the money cause my computer broke. Of course it wasn't enough to get myself a new laptop but I still appreciated them till this day. I almost wanted to do an emergency commission so I can get a new laptop but I didn't because my mom told me that if you're not living in the streets then don't be a beggar, so I just worked to get my new laptop and I did. I cherish this girl since!
@PastelVirus
@PastelVirus 2 жыл бұрын
@@moimoiyoop To be fair, it depends on whether or not the laptop is what they used to create the art for the commissions and whether or not commissions was a primary/secondary way of gaining income. People were paying for art and if the laptop was the source of creating it, if it broke then that means they'd have lost their means of creating the art. They'd be unable to complete the commissions people paid for. That could technically fall under an emergency, especially if the money was going towards something more important in the present or even near future (whether moving out, necessities, ETC). However if the laptop were for personal use and wasn't a loss to the means of creation but more personal entertainment then yes, it'd be a bummer but not an emergency. TL;DR, It really depends on the reasons for the income and whether or not that is what let them finish the commissions or not. Not every emergency has to be a 'it's happening as we speak' emergency.
@PastelVirus
@PastelVirus 2 жыл бұрын
@@moimoiyoop Where? You suggested that since they potentionally were a minor at the time that it couldn't be for their livelihood and was because they just wanted a laptop because their's got broken and thus not an emergency. I suggested it could have been one depending on other factors such as it was what they used to create the art thus without it, no more income thus, depending on their home situation/livelihood could have been an emergency. Where did you already say what I said? Was it the part where I agreed it could have been for personal use? Genuinely curious.
@ShidoDraws
@ShidoDraws 2 жыл бұрын
@@moimoiyoop I didn't want to respond to you but I guess I have to give more context. I am not a minor, I was 19 years old when that happened, I paid my own part of the rent even if I still lived with my parents. I do my commissions on my laptop and all my old works got lost because of that incident. I have a main job but the amount I was earning was low so getting a new laptop would mean I'd have to find a second job or let people pre-order their commissions. I initially didn't add these details cause I thought it wasn't necessary since the paragraph was already getting long.

Thanks for bringing up the "making fun of beginner artists" thing. When I was about 11 I once posted a piece of fanart I was pretty proud of to the Warrior Cats forums. Completely unsolicited, a user who was a few years older than me (around 15 I think) went off listing all the things I'd done wrong, not even in a constructive way, just ripping it apart. When I tried to explain that I was a beginner and still learning this art style, they replied that it was "an insult to all artists" to "dismiss anatomical mistakes as style." Now 11-year-old me already had the sense to recognize that they were being unreasonably harsh to an actual barely-in-middle-school kid, but it still stuck with me. When I posted my first drawing on my DeviantArt account, I was too terrified to open my notifications for _weeks_ because I thought I'd have dozens of people ripping into my art telling me how much it sucked. When I finally found that no one had interacted with it at all, I was relieved beyond measure and finally deleted the drawing for my peace of mind. Didn't quit, but…yeah. Don't do that. You never know what damage you're doing.

For the first one, I’ve actually had the opposite problem. I feel like I don’t take long enough, I’ve had a couple 9+ hour drawings, but it’s rare and my average is about 4. I’ll see people say they took 20+ hours on a detailed piece, and then I wonder. Is mine not detailed enough? I didn’t take 20+ hours, should I have spent more time on it?

I don't think it is honestly that big an issue. Most of the artists in the field recommend using premade brushes for environmental work as it is. And people work at different rates. If you are doing your own thing, time really has little bearing on your work. Freelance commissions have to be a bit quicker imo (someone is waiting on that product and you need to be paid for your time, but there is a fine line about time=money and the cost effectiveness of commissioning you vs a competitor) and if you work in a studio?? Professional work has a balance of time and output. A lot of mine take around 6 ish hours for a full piece, more for more details/characters etc. And some I have taken more like 16 for. Honestly, IMO, your time only matters if you are charging for it or trying to find a price point for your art. I know my process is a lot less streamlined when drawing for fun vs work

Naah, it's generally common for us to draw faster if it's something we're used to draw, like, say you draw a ton of fish and very often, your brain more or less knows where everything should sit and how to move the hands to get the desired effect. But then suddenly one day you want to draw, say, a horse or a human, something you've never drawn before. Naturally that'd take a bit longer because your brain have to focus more on details that you're not used to looking at, such as how the joints and muscles are set up, how angles change for that new thing (even if you have a strong grasp of anatomy/angle concepts and have tons of reference images) etc. Tied that in with some people also not drawing non-stop and taking many breaks or having work/school/similar stuff that takes away time/energy (because some people draw and sell art while also studying for example) and you have more time it takes to complete pieces. It's very different per individual (I go anywhere from 2 hours to 2 months on my stuff lmao) and per piece you work on, so don't feel like you have to "keep up and do like everybody else", it's completely normal and art should be fun so you shouldn't stress over it if you enjoy it c:

only thing i disagreed with is the talking bad about other peoples art, like yeah its natural to think somethings bad or ugly, but i really dont think anyone should voice those opinions-- its rude and can demotivate the artist, this coming from someone who's been told plenty of times that my art sucks (and people even used that to invalidate my argument once, an argument that actually had nothing to do with art!) just thinking someone's art is ugly isnt something to be ashamed of though, its human nature.

Man on the first point, since I was a kid on DeviantArt, I was always proud of how long a piece took me. I'd honestly claim that I'd worked on something for 7+ hours because I felt pride in my dedication and I wanted people to take a pause to really look at the piece and try to see the extra details. If you say you did it super fast then it probably means there are less little things to look for. Nowadays, where the place I share art most often is TikTok, it makes sense that I don't expect people to spend a lot of time with my art, but back in the DeviantArt days, they had the option to full-size the pieces and I wanted them to take it.

That first one is so funny because I was always taught that spending less time on a piece is worse. I was told that if it took less time it meant the piece isn’t good because it took too little time to be able to have nice details. I always feel bad when I don’t spend several hours on a piece. Id also like to add that not everyone who bashes their own art is attention seeking. Negative self talk is an addiction and I only say bad things about it is because I don’t feel like I’m allowed to say good things about it, even if I really like it. But if people say their art is “so bad” and then get mad when people agree with them, they’re definitely fishing for attention. Another issue is that people in the art community are all for artistic expression unless they don’t like the subject of the artwork. Ship art, vent art, art depicting abuse, art of real people, pro shipping, etc. are ALWAYS shat on by the art community. It’s art. It’s not real. It’s the way people express themselves. You have no right to harass people for their art even if YOU don’t like it or YOU think it’s morally bad. That’s your opinion. This is especially rampant with kpop artists and it’s honestly disgusting how people can’t just block the artist if they don’t like what they’re seeing.

Zine is not out yet but the people on there have grown and got more recognized, im happy for them We also got some shit from egotistic small artists complaining they didn't get in and it was about small artists bla bla bla, but we couldn't do much, their art wasn't on the theme of the zine and they needed to get a lil better, most of them where just starting If you're a beginner artist, focus ond improving and evolving what you like! I feel similarly bad when someone calls these kinds of pieces a doodle. I've found just from watching people draw first hand that most are much faster than me, so again, I don't really doubt people's ability to work fast. For the fist one, I’ve now become quite concerned that people think I’m lying about my drawing speed- I used to _really, really,_ want to make comics, and I learned that you need to draw fast to make them, so I ended up being able to whip out a sketch in like 30mins… A fully shaded piece can take me anywhere from an hour or 2 to 5 is it’s got a background or small details! Apparently that’s extremely fast… I didn’t even know people lied about that stuff, why would someone lie about that? If anything, having a longer time means you really put in a lot of effort!

A thing to consider with the speed of an artist should be A) Art style, B) Time constraints and C) Pickiness/Perfectionism. Personality, my art doesn't normally doesn't take me more then 3-5 hours. But this is because my style is optimized for speed! If I had a super clean style, I would never get anything done because it would take so long. My attention span is the same as a puppy. I also don't have a lot of free time, so I'm used to churning out a scene, halfbody, ect within an hour and a half right after I wake up before I have to haul to get to school. I don't care much about what my art looks like unless it looks odd when flipped. I go through the motions of drawing so that I can shade. I love shading. Its my favorite part, you know what I need to do to shade? Everything else. Anyway, some hints to optimize time: HOTKEYS, Ctrl-Z isn't the only one, use them :v White spots when fill bucket? Up your PPI Check early on for errors. Flip your canvas, it helps find out what looks off about it. Alpha Lock keeps everything on that layer. I'm not good at explaining it, so make a circle, turn on alpha Lock, and try to draw a line starting from the middle. The line should stop once it reaches the end of the circle! Have a good day:D

My biggest pet peeve has been whenever I post a piece of art on instagram, I always get a comment or DM where a person praises my art saying how unique and exquisite it is, and then asks if I’m interested in selling it as NFTs. Bro, if I did NFTs, then it wouldn’t be unique and exquisite anymore! I may be a small instagram artist who’s bunny pictures gets more likes than my art (which I am not complaining at all because I love my bunny and the world needs more bunny content) but I will never ever stoop so low as to sell my art as an NFT. I am anti-NFT and if I wanted to sell my art, I would sell prints at a craft fair for charity. Because news flash! Once you put a price tag on a piece of art, people will be judging it for it’s quality to see if it’s actually worth that amount. What’s also been worrying me is that I’ve heard stories of people stealing art to sell as an NFT without the creator’s knowledge. I’m afraid that one of these accounts might do that even though I said no.

It looks so fancy ^^ Aaaannnndddd we're back to another video with Paige voicing my exact thoughts on a matter, just with a little more rage than I would use XD Loved how there were even a few peeves in this video that I didn't even realize I had- really enjoyed hearing you rant about them! The one that struck me in particular was the one about the art time- that's one of the things I'm very conscious about considering I spend anywhere from 7 to 30 hours on a piece for my project and anywhere from 4 to 8 on a design, so I'm not particularly fast and sometimes worry if I'll ever finish the project all together- and it feels discouraging when people make it seem like a similarly detailed piece only took them like 2 hours when you know there's no way that's true (though I have seen artists make incredible pieces in the 1-hour challenge, posting their real time videos to KZbin even, that's some skill and I can definitely appreciate that!)

I hate it when people post art and comment something akin to "It takes ZERO seconds for you to retweet/like a small creator. " They're right, but it also takes me zero seconds to not retweet their strange guilt-mongering/peer-pressure post. That and "Why is my WIP getting more likes than my finished piece?! This is unacceptable, you guys need to go over and like THAT one!!" Do I even need to say why this one pisses me off???

I have made precisely one emergency commission call, and I found it mortifying, I felt like I shouldn’t have been in the tags and that there were better ppl in the tags The reason I did it was bc I couldn’t afford to get food for the rest of the week at my college I really can’t imagine going into those tags for anything less than not being able to feed myself When I really want something I just have a discount

I don't generally mind any of these, but I HATE when someone comments, "omg raise your commission prices; you're underselling yourself," and then proceeds to NOT commission me. I know I'm underselling myself. I spend a lot of time on my pieces for the small amount of money I get. Still, I need money desperately (my family will become homeless in about 3 months if we don't get money quickly), and the only way I get people to notice me is when I sell for $1, and even then, they are NOT BUYING. Maybe I'm an ah, but it infuriates me.

Ooooh! What you said about zines is so true! I had to unfollow all the zine alert accounts and even mute the word in my settings as I ended up being so frustrated as I saw people who I was better than repeatedly get into the same zines. That's not arrogance, it's just true. I spent too many years self deprecating to not finally acknowledge when my shit is good. It's just the popular girl's table all over again. I did get into a zine, but wasn't able to keep up because my mental health was bad and I had about 8 suicide attempts all in one year. I had to bow out from 2, which hurt after FINALLY getting into one, and then I decided until i wasn't at the point where I had to give my scarf to my roommate for my own safety, I wouldn't try to do a zine again.

my attention span when it comes to working on a piece is short so I find it more impressive when someone has the energy and dedication to work on something for several hours.

I do agree that when adult artists do commission’s and claim they’re too busy to finish what they started is insanely annoying. But as someone in high school who does commissions it is very hard to plan things perfectly. I often think I’ll have plenty of time to finish a commission by the deadline and then suddenly a new school project was dropped on me out of nowhere. A lot of artists don’t say their age (at least the ones I enjoy) so I try not to judge them too harshly if something suddenly happens.

The first point made me feel so much BETTER about my art. I have always told my friends that I feel so slow cause these artists post things that take a fraction of the time it takes for me to do lineart. I am still slower than other artists, but at least I know that I might not be THAT much slower.

I wasn't aware that people lie about how long it took to make a work, I always thought it was true and thought it was cool that they would share how long it took. It usually makes me happy to know how long it took, it makes me think maybe one day I would be able to finish something close to that time rather than a couple of days when I was younger.

I'm on DeviantArt and have art progressions on Instagram and I've always cringed at telling others how long a piece tells me. What I do say is what materials I use. I see how long someone does art the same as asking a religious person or a faith follower on how long they pray... That's between them and their beliefs. Just as I'm not telling others how long it takes for a particular piece, or wanting to know that same info from other artists.

I constantly got comments like: promote it on ... Amazing work, send it to I don't even do art. I'm journaling 😂. Like I take official art of anime and journal with it (granted, I do some drawing, but only if one part of the body is cut off the official art. Mostly top of the head, fingertips)

I've done the opposite of the time thing. I have claimed that my art took 8-10 hours (I did usually screenshot the tracked time in procreate). I don't usually do it unless someone asks anymore but I think it's funny that I do the exact opposite.

Whenever I draw, 90% of the time I've no idea how long it took. It just doesn't cross my mind to keep track. I wish I remembered more, purely because I'm curious how long I take.😅

I was vibing on the internet, as you do, and someone in the comments was giving unsolicited advice to a new artist and it was so rude!! When they got backlash for being rude and giving unsolicited advice, they legitimately said that they “never said they were a good person” and that “They hate bad artists, and you can never become good at art if you didn’t start in middle school.” It’s so ignorant,rude, and unhelpful!! Don’t give unsolicited advice people!!

I've struggled a lot in college with classes and meeting deadlines. I've been dealing with feelings of inadequacy, apathy, procrastination, and guilt as a student in visual arts and graphic & web design. It hurts me mentally to ask for extensions on my projects, but I just do it anyways because it gives me extra time to feel safe. I wish I wasn't the way that I am but I am and it just makes me feel guilty for not being like everyone else. I know I need therapy for this, but I currently don't have any money for it, and I've been struggling financially which doesn't help things. I'm not defending those who are legitemately lazy and just procrastinate for the sake of it but just be aware that people may be struggling in some way when they ask for an extension the night before it's due.

The only moment I actually used the "Im in art school" excuse is when my brother said that primary colours are red blue and GREEN. It was frustrating because I had just spent the past month luring about the color wheel and what match whith what, how to create each colors and the categories. It's magenta, cyan and yellow. 😭

16:13 i agree with this one a lot people mocking beginner artists and making fun of them (specifically on tiktok) act like everyone’s born with talent to create perfect art, which is obviously not how that works they have to practice but for some reason people act like it’s weird that they get anatomy wrong and act like they can’t do that and it’s really fucking discouraging and they think they’re being funny but they’re not, the artist is trying hard to improve and people are telling them to quit because their art isn’t immediately perfect, and obviously, nobody’s is. every single amazing artist you see has started off drawing “cringy” art

I 100% agree with not giving critique if not asked, especially if it’s not the place for it. I normally don’t mind critique but I once posted about my improvement through an Instagram reel since it’s the best way to get people to see your art now and 99% of the comments I got, all from people that didn’t even follow me were critiques and telling me how to improve, again, normally I wouldn’t mind but it really wasn’t the place to do so, plus I’m really struggling to build a following for my art account it’s extremely discouraging and makes me feel like my art isn’t any good at all. when I post about my improvement I’d much rather have no comments than comments telling me how to Improve more, it was a good 5 year gap and I myself already wasn’t as satisfied with the amount of progress I made so it just made me really mad, worst part is I barely get any actual interaction with my art, barely 20 likes for a post, somehow got 160 followers, most of the likes come from people I know and usually no comments yet people decided to give someone who didn’t ask elementary basic art improvement tips that I already know and used(I guarantee 90% of artists know those things)

This was a very refreshing pet peeve video with interesting points, especially the exclusivity one. Looking forward to hearing you go more in depth into the zine issue. In regards to the engagement one, I gotta say twitter is probably the worst one for me. I'm not really good at many marketing skills, one of the reasons being that it's really hard to stick to the same things as I'll burn out after a while and need to change it up from time to time. But having the wish to make my place as an online artist/content creator twitter really nurtured this conflict of needing to be aware of how the platform actually works, but also enjoying drawing and myself to a frustrating degree, recently especially as I feel like I'm just stuck no matter what I try to do.
