There's a pretty nice community I'm part of (Scratch), and there's a clearly very young writer there who hasn't see the worst of the world, so I'm just doing my best to encourage them and help them get better at writing. They recently shared a little snippet of them singing along with "don't bully me" in the title, and I don't think that it was because they've been bullied in the past (I think they might've just been suffering from 'I just heard a recording of my voice and I am ripping out my hair now' syndrome), but I took the time to write out a positive comment just to try and help them along in their journey. :)

It’s such a shame that people are being mocked for their art styles. Not only in relation to just beginning artists either. Take my younger sister for example. Her art style is one of the most unique ones I’ve come across. She doesn’t ever draw eyes for her characters. She’ll give them mouths, noses, ears, fingers and all the other things artists typically struggle with, but she intentionally leaves out eyes. She can draw eyes, she just prefers not to. While I think this is a very cool and uncommon stylistic choice, other people who see her draw tend to pick on her about it. Like, come on guys. Can people not even have uniqueness in their art? Which, I can’t possibly stress enough, is completely subjective. In short, mocking somebody’s unique art style is dumb and also bad
@BooTheEater

Oh hey, your sister's artstyle reminds me of some animators on youtube! TheAMaazing dosent draw their eyes either, and Let Me Explain Studios dosent draw mouths. @jordanmatthews1466

Omission is not unique. Especially not omission of the eyes. What's most likely happening to your sister is people experienceing the uncany valley and, being ill-equipped to verbalize their disturbance. "The eyes are the window to the soul". Take away the window and all people have is fear and contempt. Hence why it is a stylistic choice commonly associated with HORROR artists.

FINALLY!!! I can’t be the only one who absolutely DESPISE cringe culture. It sours the mood and make everything annoying! They went like “oh, don’t be afraid to show your art!” And when a beginner artist show their art, these people immediately bully the artist without giving actual criticism. This happens a lot when I used to be active on tiktok. Basically, they bully a beginner artist and proceed to make a rumor about the artist being problematic somehow in order to justify their actions and get more people to bully the artist with them. These people also thinks they are smart, when getting called out their either say “you can’t take a joke” or “haha snowflakes ❄️ “ or “I’m just giving constructive criticism 🥺” like UGH I hate them so much. They even make a whole azz board dedicated to mocking and wishing death to those they deem as “cringe”. All while preaching “no bullying pls” or “mental health is important”

I grew up entirely on cringe culture, do you know what a little 11 year old neurodivergent me grew up to? A perfectionist, a museum artist, a realism drawing machine making only the things that were socially acceptable and "pretty" I never got to make fanart of my special interests (and I'm still too scared to post it) I lost my childhood to fear of not confirming to norms, hell I was even afraid to draw animals because someone might call it "furry art" I am sad to think how many more of my art peers had the same experiences I'm a scene, therian, anime loving, furry, lgbtq, cartoon enthusiast, neurodivergent artist and I am so fucking happy I woke up one day with the guts to just say it how it is, I'm tired of the realism, I'm tired of the painting, I'm tired of saying I don't like Sonic and MLP and watching cartoons etc. I love simple cartoon styles and really bright colours and inserting my rainbow barf characters into the things I like and if people don't like that fuck them, I am choosing to be happy, I am choosing to be myself and I'm glad I'm surrounded by a small community of such amazing and supportive people who love what I make And I've been bullied, oh I've been bullied so much even if it was just a regular human character with slightly bright colours it was mocked and it made younger me sit in a corner and cry because I tried doing something different, I don't think that a 9 year old should be crying at their desk, sobbing, on the verge of vomit because people tell them that they are cringe, that they should d1e, that their art is garbage and that nobody loves them because they drew something badly art is supposed to be an escape form reality and something comforting (especially to literal children)

I'm so glad more people are drawing the connection between cringe culture/bullying and ableism. I think that neurodivergence is often invisible to others, so it makes people feel like they can make fun of others with a clear conscience that it's not inherently charged by bigotry. Ableism or not, no one should be made fun of just because their behaviors don't fit social norms, but I do feel pretty salty when people think they have the moral high-ground for supposedly not bullying someone over identity. Neurodivergent people end up an unconscious target of bullying and mockery because no one wants to believe their actions are influenced by discriminatory views.

And Jevil’s page on the DR wiki is always on top of trending Ok sorry for writing so much I’m gonna quit now lol But I hope we get to see Lancer a lot more in later chapters (Jevil & Seam too! and I hope we get to battle that old cat someday)

I’m in the gacha community, I joined years ago before it was even close to being a huge community. I’ve only stayed in this community for 3 reasons, 1 I find the artstyle cute 2 it’s easy to make ocs in and 3 I’m nostalgic about it. The gacha community introduced me into ocs and drawing. But the thing about being in this community for approximately 5 years now is that I don’t just make neon characters and make stereotypical stories anymore, because I’ve improved over time. Gacha is basically just a base for me to use because I fully animate and draw parts of my ocs on my own. Because of the stigma around this community I would literally die before tell people I know in real life I’m in this community. I once commented on a random video and I was flooded with people mocking me about my gacha pfp (which literally wasn’t even gacha at the time it was just a random chibi character lmao) Anyway, in conclusion people need to chill the hell out

Because of your last statement, it really hurts to see you say "stupid" and "cringy" about yourself. If what others may call "stupid" and "cringy" help you get through life, why in the [annoyed-sounding celeste chord, in lieu of various cuss words!] should "they" have any right to criticize you? My life is somewhat less fally-aparty, and I'm mostly okay most of the time - but that's in significant part to my collection of cuddly and huggable stuffed animals, whom I occasionally hug and pat their heads in public when I happen to have one or two with me, especially in moments where I am not OK. Especially about your OC, having written some fanfic myself, in a show universe where it's very easy, and necessary, to have OC's (police procedurals, where the established characters must solve the "crime of the week", and suspects, victims, witnesses, and all sorts of NPC-types wander through, always have this opportunity), I can say that even when an OC is inserted as one of these "characters" of the episode, with the slight possibility that the OC may have a part to play in a story arc of several episodes, but not as a permanent member of the cast/universe, one gets criticism anyway, if not for any of the excuses listed in this video, well, just because! So all I can say is, when you get this [angry celeste chord!], find your own version of a song (or, if you're like me, a playlist!) that tells "them!" to go to hell, go directly to hell, do not pass "Go", do not collect $200!, and turn it up to 11 and jam! (May I suggest Prince's "Let's Go Crazy"?) 😊

Hello, I'm a 40yo artist who's been drawing since 7. Although the term "Cringe Art" is new the sentimentality of it can be traced. The Value of Art in American society has always been an interesting study when you compare it to how other industries around the world learned from it built their own. Even sense targeting advertising found ways to sell children's toys with Cartoons, the national look at drawing cartoons was seen as cringe and childish. Since then, artist have been trying to built a more mature demographic by telling more compelling stories, characters and styles. I call this the "For Entertainment" movement. Fan Artist make easy cringe targets because you can't fully monetize it and it often plays into "Self enjoyment/fulfillment" rather then appealing to entertain others. With the worst sides of it devolving into pure fetish material. This has set the standard that drawing mature content to any style that looks like its targeted towards children as creepy and cringe. Further reinforcement of these standards is the lack in quality storytelling told using these styles. The For Entertainment movement has alot of momentum due to seeing how profitable the Japanese animation/manga industry is. You might wonder why would you want to create profitable entertainment? because artist and animators want to make a living doing that work and there needs to be a demand for your services at a rate you can pay bills. Most beginner artist don't understand that battle and just want to work on their style by drawing what they like. Personally i feel like what the domestic market is lacking is properly established demographic labeling like the japanese market. Regardless of what style its drawn in, you can tell its target demo by the genre labels and maturity rating. Sorry if this is long but i didn't expect to be drawn into this topic, so i'm saying all this before i forget.

@sourgreendolly7685 it's all about practice, patience, and not rushing it at all. The full image took 40+ hours over 2 weeks to color. Just used yellow to mark where my light sources were hitting the character, and then worked from dark to light with my markers. I also kept a scrap piece of paper, the same kind as what the image was on, and did practice blends for smooth transitions or to see if the shading 'popped' enough. Like the hat in my pfp. Marked the area hit by my light source with my lightest yellow i could clearly see, then used C9 in the area away from the moon on the hat, followed by C7. Then, at this point, I swapped to W5 cuz the hat's 'black' is getting warmer due to the yellow light of the moon. Followed by W3, and finally, Y11 over the areas I marked with the lighter yellow earlier. Just remember practice and patience. And if you're getting frustrated, walk away and take a break. You'll get markers if you keep at it. I REALLY sucked at markers when I first started using them, too. I feel like it's a right of passage, haha.

I am a furry, anime, and general goofy artist. I feel like this is a good reminder that ANATOMY IS NOT REQUIRED FOR GOOD ART!! For example, Cuphead, Spinel from Steven Universe, and BATIM are based in Rubber Hose art style which has very limited anatomy restrictions. I draw anthro animals since I love drawing expressions and experimenting on seeing how an animal would look smiling, crying, laughing, and etc and that’s how I got into the fandom (which is very nice btw). my favorite “branching” art style I have from my own is where I draw characters as head stuck on little cones and bouncing around or with exaggerated expressions. All said and done, art is not about creating a perfect thing right away, senior artists have a responsibility in helping smaller artists grow and work themselves into better artists! Don’t let reality stop you! The point of art is IMAGINATION!! You like a fictional character? Draw how they would interact with your character! And don’t go after the sparkle dogs and overpowered OCs! If you let the creator be then usually those characters deemed as “cringe” can grow and develop with the artist into really amazing things! A cool example is C.S Lewis was criticized for his drafts of Narnia (yeah Lion, Witch, Wardrobe and all), but with some encouragement from others the book was completed and published and I think you might know the rest! (This is a very butchered version of the story I’m very sorry 😅) In short, don’t let other people’s standards hold you back from being yourself! “GO BEYOND! PLUS ULTRA!!” -All Might

I remember getting dragged into a group that had big cringe culture vibes back in cringe culture's first wave and, to be frank, it was *horrible*. An all-around horrible experience where I was surrounded by mean-spirited people who I was terrified to be my true self around for fear of being their next target so I never felt like I fit in with them at all but I stayed anyway just so I could fly under their radar. I remember not really making much art anymore at the time either, again I was too scared to express myself. During that time I only stuck to one person in that entire group because he already knew what I was like but I felt shunned by everyone else even when they were friendly towards me. That pressure anyone feels if they get embroiled with cringe culture is real and it is damaging! When that group fell apart I felt liberated, returned to making art and found true friends but I still carry a scar from that time. I can't stand destructive things because that's really all cringe culture is: Destruction just for the sake of destruction. If any cringe lord tells you "They're just trying to give criticism", no they are not! Nobody ever improves from being in a cringe comp, they just stop, a premature end to what could have been.

But I got a LOT of hate comments because Equestria Girls was considered "cringe" back when the first movie came out and I was a beginner artist at that time. I even found almost my ENTIRE deivantart gallery reposted onto derpibooru (a mlp image board) with people making fun of them behind my back. It was discouraging! That was already exactly a decade ago. But now as an adult, I still draw plenty of ponies, Equestria Girls, OCs and art for whatever other special interests I may have! If you're an artist and you're scared of being bullied for being cringe, repeat this in your head: "If I like what I drew, it's good." Art is a very wide topic. You can do pretty much whatever you want on that piece of paper or that canvas on your device. Everyone's taste in art is different. I like to draw in a Gacha Club style (Mostly because I use GC to make most of my characters. That makes it easier to imagine them :]), and some people don't like that. A lot of people like the art style that old superhero comics have, and I'm not a big fan of it. And that's okay. That is called having an opinion. And having an opinion is perfectly fine, healthy even. Now if it's for commissions, that may be another story, because you want your client to be satisfied. I don't do commissions, so I can't talk about this. I'm talking about doing art for fun or for posting online: If you like what you drew, it's good. Also remember that everyone has a different art style. Like me, who draws in a Gacha Club like style. Maybe you're good in drawing MLP characters, or animals, or realistically, or stick figures: It doesn't matter. I really hate cringe culture as how it is now. If what you do is something that you like and it isn't hurting anyone, do it! If what you do hurts someone, that is cringe. Oh, and it is NOT cringe to be an adult/teen and liking childish stuff. There is a minimum age for almost everything, but no maximum age. This comes from a 14 year old who still watches Hello Kitty, Sonic X and TAWOG. So, just remember that the only art that is truly cringe is illegal art (Like child p--n.), and "fixing" art. Fixing art is taking one's character or art, changing it, and saying you "fixed" it. Most of the time this involves changing the character's skin colour, weight, or any illness/disability. There is no way to "fix" art. If you do any of these, then please do me a favour and keep it to yourself. If you do see it, please report it. If you don't do illegal art, I can say to you that your art is good

Because you follow your interests instead of molding them to what's popular. That's a good thing no matter how many people pretend it isn't. As someone being a part of one of the most hated communitys, Gacha, I can confirm that most of us are afraid to show our art, edits, video or anything we do related to gacha that isn't in our "safe place" where there are other people from our community that we know will not send us death threats or start insulting us for making an edit of a gacha character that is not accepted on what society considers a "good edit". I was afraid all the time to play Gacha Club on school since i thought everyone would see me as a weirdo that likes gacha life.

I’m so glad this is being talked about. As the quite infamous quote says, “Don’t kill the part of you that’s cringe, kill the part of you that cringes.” Like, there’s nothing wrong in what you like. You have to remember that a lot of bad that comes from a fandom is a loud minority. There are exceptions of course, but that doesn’t change the fact that an overwhelming majority are just people liking things, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that.

I'm an autistic person who still likes Sonic, Pokémon (even have a couple Pokémon characters), draws pretty much exclusively furry art, and still collects plush toys (heck, I've "recently" started carrying a big Super Sonic plush with me. When I go out). And while I don't have the guts to do it, I have wanted to dye my hair blue... Multiple times I basically breath "cringe". And that's fine. My like, one rule/reason why I think people shouldn't like something. Is that they shouldn't use it to hurt themself/others (and also, nothing illegal) Sure there's, lots of things I don't like. And probably won't interact with people who like them. But that just simply comes down to, me not wanting to see it

I’m autistic. I used to have a massive special interest in MLP. As a kid (8-13) I was bullied, made fun of, laughed at, mocked etc for liking my little pony. I was cringe, stupid, childish and dumb for drawing the characters from it and the ones I made. By the end of seventh grade I couldn’t bring myself to even watch the show anymore. And I stopped drawing it way before then. After that, I had Interests in Steven Universe and Sander Sides, and I was picked on for those too. Those experiences have stuck with me for so long. Some of my recent fixations and interests have been on Sonic and also TMNT, and even though I’m more comfortable being myself, those experiences from before stick with my and sometimes it’s still really hard to share what I like

I'm a neurodivergent artist and the only way I can feel happy is by connecting with my special interests or 'obsessions' through art. For some of us, our special interest become the center of out life and often help us cope with every day things that we may struggle with more than the typical person (Sometimes I have breakdowns over change in my house or plans). I've been thankful not to run into any people online who look down on certain interests and things, but I can't even imagine how discouraging it would be and how harmful. The worst thing is, some people end up associating that special interest with a time they were bullied or put down, ruining that particular thing for them and in turn taking a toll on their mental health.

I've been drawing since I can remember, but the 3 fandoms that made me fall in love with it were MLP, FNaF and furries. That's why I started drawing, and gurss what? This cringy emo kid who drew Foxy x Mangle fanart and made dozens of MLP pegasus/dragon/changeling hybrid self-insert OCs and hundreds of sparkledog characters for animation memes, nowadays, this kid is a professional character designer, concept artist and game artist. I don't regret it at all. I started taking art seriously at age 12, therefore 6 years ago. Lemme tell you, I was DEAD scared of making a, God forbid! "Edgy" character?!?!? A-a... A "cringy" OC??!?! UNACCEPTABLE!! I would relentlessly search "how to make a good OC" "how to know if your OC is cringy/edgy" "Is my OC a Mary-Sue" and so on. Guess what? The characters I had the most fun writing and designing are the cringiest, edgiest ones I have, and MAN I have 170+ OCs. My favorite OC of mine is a 5'3 dr.u.ggie catboy with daddy issues who has flaming red hair (well... orange) and huge tusks. My newest is an immortal nihilist who killed his best friend by accident and he can only be described as a tall androgynous twink who's a mix of 50s greasers and a metalhead. My second favorite is literally the stereotype of a short, chubby computer nerd who's a gamer and has crippling low self-esteem and who looks like this 🤓. Are they cringe? YES, ABSOLUTELY, AND I LOVE THEM! I had much more fun designing and developing these guys than any of the "cringe-proof" OCs I meticulously crafted in order to not be made fun of online. Moral of the story, cringe culture is dead. And I killed it lol. It's not for nothing that this sentence is literally written on my YT "about" section. Draw and write what makes you happy, otherwise, what's even the point of it?

Usually when there’s an online movement to shun certain things, it’s usually because the people themselves are trying to fit in, even if they secretly partake in the “cringe.” One of the first times I’ve noticed this behavior online were the “jokes” under lewd posts, saying how they will not yield to temptation or whatever. I highly doubt that most of those “No, not me, I’m not into that!” statements rather than joke are by people who genuinely aren’t interested in that type of material.

Also should say as soon as something becomes popular with children, it is considered cringey for an adult to like it because most of the time the bar is set so low for kids that anything with a large child fanbase is thought to be not good enough. Take Friday Night Funkin for example. A simple rhythm game that was definitely NOT made for kids and was just a Newgrounds love letter, now considered cringey because it appeals to a lot of kids. I think people have to understand that just because kids haven't developed a taste yet and don't know when something is truly good quality wise, that doesn't always mean everything they like is automatically bad quality

Finally an artist that realizes that mocking and laughing at your own art publically can make someone feel their art is trash and that they should draw like their favorite artist, because kids and teenagers look up to those artist and when they see that this artist is making fun of their old drawing because they were "cringe" and "edgy", the kid will stop enjoying making their art and be afraid of get mocked at for their drawings. You are literally the first one i've saw that realizes how dangerous this is for kids or not even kids, it could also be teenagers or even adults that enjoy drawing and by seeing this they completly stop drawing at all.

There's this one advice that I heard from someone is that the idea of "cringe" is that everyone feels that they should be in line with society's mainstream or else you'll be classified as a weirdo / freak, or something. Cringe culture has been such a toxic wasteland since day one and it kinda sucks that artists and people in general that have been targeted and harassed for whatever harmless content they create and enjoy feel self-conscious just for finding comfort and happiness in that fandom or franchise. It's not worth being so negatively relentless towards people all the time for enjoying stuff that has no effect on your life or anyone else's. A lot of people tend to contribute to that culture without ever realizing it until it finds its way around again. All in all, fuck cringe culture. There's really nothing to be embarrassed about. Most of the time, "cringe" content is rather genuine at best. We all start somewhere, that's fair enough, we improve in our work overtime. Honest engagement in harmless and wholesome content that's deemed to be childish, shameful or weird by other groups of people is an attraction for an audience to sink themselves in their so-called irony or hypocrisy. Nothing's ever "cringe" because (just about) everything can be amazing in it's own unique way. Get out there, embrace the world and be entitled and happy for whatever community you're into.

What are your thoughts about people deeming subject matter "cringe" because of the source material being seen as problematic? Examples like Harry Potter, Attack on Titan, Dream SMP. I don't see this quite as often as the bigger ones you named like FNAF and Sonic, but I do sometimes see cringe culture justified over "problematic" media. It doesn't even have to be something as controversial as Harry Potter, because I've seen Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss fans roped into this justification as well.

This made me look back upon my past, thankfully I didn't contribute a lot to cringe culture, not a content creator, but I did join in on the "fun." In my head, it wasn't that bad because I was watching people who would specifically look upon their old stuff and talk about why. Although I did fall into the trap of "edgy characters are cringe." But on of my favorite oc IS an edglord and I love them as much I traumatize them. I didn't realize how much harm this was and, well...I was kinda afraid to share my character once I realized they where an egdlord bc they'd be proceaved as cringe or bad. Now I've been wanting to write there full story. A trend I seam to find over and over is reverse growth in culture, encouraging people to basically be immature children that are scared of anything new to the norm they've been layed into. Every step forward somewhere seams to put a step back somewhere else. There are things we can do to medigate these things, I just hope that's enough. I wanted to post a long comment to boost the algorithm and I found something legit to talk about :3

Draw whatever you want whenever you want. Block and ignore negative people, they give up when they get nothing in return, they just want reactions to fuel them, a little emotion in their sad little lives.. Draw them rainbow alicorns and self inserts shipped with Sans, nobody can stop you XD I like the message at the end, getting rid of the part of you that cringes and not the cringe should be something we all do. I don't cringe at my old art, I see everything wrong with it and I'm like geez I need to redraw this to fix the mistake of my past pff. But those aren't really mistakes, it's the best I could do at the time with skills and knowledge I had. I've thankfully avoided anything related to those pathetic cringe ppl for years now. It's probably cuz I'm not on tiktok or leave any negative groups. Be it no stabilizer when drawing with my tablet, pixels between outlines and color or the rainbow characters I redesigned in the past years. I see my old art and am flooded with memories of those times, my memory is really detailed and has whole moments recorded so I remember how I made most of my art from MS paint to paint tool SAI. Point is, enjoy what you do and did, if it made you happy before why hate on it now? But back in the day in the mlp fandom on Facebook there was this random cringe page roasting 12 year olds and their art. We reported them countless times, think the page was taken down a couple times too. They eventually died off and were blocked from all active groups but think it might still be up to this day as a relic of some angry teen who had nothing to do than bully other kids on Facebook.. There's one thing kinda unrelated but related to this that I constantly see tho. When people redraw their old art and then asking which is better and then people saying the one they drew like 5 years ago was better can really mess them up. Even if it's a joke or worse when they just post it and say it's redraw and get ppl who are like lol the old one is better.. it's really a trap people walk into when redrawing so be mindful of that. Everyone has a different path of progress, the things they changed, added are all part of it and should be like oh you have changed so much but you have improved so much.

When highschool started, being an emo-furry type teen I was ostracized even more. I am Mario gachatuber in the Gacha community and in my opinion I think the gacha community is getting better not perfect by any means but better I say this because right now we're on a Gacha Mod Renaissance meaning alot of teens and young adults In the community are making mods to make video's better In quality, better character designs or just to flat out express themselves more! And with more mods coming out each day more people are supporting and encouraging gacha creator's to take there time, take breaks and express there creativity and I think that's a beautiful thing and even outside of gacha mods more people are starting to get into gacha and get there own idea's out with people also supporting them and encouraging them to make there video's and improve on them! Now I know I would not be a missed if I did not mention the bad in the community and yes even to this day we still have people making incest, bully or harassing others, pedo or zoo pilles, quiting or straight up dieing from outside forces and more but I'm here to say that things are getting better despite the horrible side of the community it's getting smaller every day! And instead being replaced with AMAZING gachatubers with alot of heart and talent and absolutely deserve to be recognized as such! So please despite all the terrible things you might hear about the gacha community we really are a good community that has alot of heart, talent and effort put into this community. Thank you for reading if you got this far I hope you this helps explain so things if it did have a good day/night everyone :)

I'm put off by certain art styles/franchises like the thumbnail examples... but it isn't the artist's responsibility to cater to my stupid opinion, so I shut the fuck up and leave my thoughts to myself. As much as I don't enjoy, say, MLP art, the artists are having fun, and that's what matters. If I were to tease content like that, I'd do it in private, not where my words would hurt the passionate creators and peers of those who made the artwork. Seems simple enough to me.
