In SMB / Duck Hunt, it's the opposite. Player 1 can control the ducks while player 2 shOOts. If you do it with 1=Zapper 2=Controller nothing will work.

I used to use a controller to control the ducks on screen but Iwas confused on why the screen kept turning red whilst saying "Fly away" but now I know that a game model gun exists.

You can control the ducks with a NES controller if it's connected to NES controller port 2. I've heard of that earlier. The NES is a childhood console that I never had. Because I was fascinated with the NES console and games as a child. I never had that console. I instead played NES games on an emulator on my Windows computers that ran on XP, 7, 8.1 and 10. I will get an NES console and games in the future, Insha Allah!
