Duck Lake Pass Trail, A Must Hike in Mammoth Lakes, CA

Duck Lake Pass Trail is one of the most beautiful trails in all of the Inyo National Forest. This trail is not for beginners. The 10-mile trail with an elevation gain of 2,132 feet is normally quite doable. However, Duck Lake is located at around 10,800 feet, which means that the air will be quite thin, especially for flatlanders like us. If you’re sensitive to high altitudes, you might get sick. That being said, we would do this trail again in a heartbeat. Duck Lake Pass trail is beautiful from start to finish, with each lake you pass is more stunning than the last.

@@ThatAdventureLife ​ Absolutely amazing !! Some extra notes I may add to share with others: 1.> A lot of Mosquitos at Skelton Lake area. Prepare something to prevent Mosquito bites. 2.> Duck Lake Trial doesn't end at Dock Lake, not end at Pika Lake either. Dock Lake Trial can connect to PCT. 3.> Most daily hiking folks stop at top of mountain; as this video presents at 5:20 to enjoy the amazing view of Dock lake. 4.> In an average speed, I'd say it's about 2.5 hours to reach Dock lake without spending time on other lakes.

I did this hike and camped at Duck lake when I was 15 (35 years ago). There was hardly anyone on the trail back then. Your video has inspired to get back there soon. One of my favorite spots in the Eastern Sierras.

Have you done the entire loop? It includes starting your hike at the trailhead at Lake George, all the way up to Mammoth Crest, continuing behind Mammoth Crest down into Deer Lake Basin, then crawling up out of Deer Lake Basin , then down to Duck Lake, through to Duck Lake Pass, then down to Coldwarer Creek campground....you have to do the entire loop in one day. You should also invest in some good hiking poles-hike like a pro and save your knees.

Going this Aug to hike around Mammoth Lake before starting JMT. I think I will hike Duck Lake after other less strenuous to acclimatize. After your video, it is my must to do list😇

Yes you can camp overnight there. Make sure to get an overnight permit though.

I have done the Duck Lake hike probably 50 times. I agree with @Drone Flyer, you should really try that loop from Lake George...almost to Crystal Lake and take the right just before you get to Crystal to hit Mammoth Crest and go around. You'll emerge at Coldwater when you're done which is the trailhead for Duck. When you come back out at the DL trailhead you'll need to make your way back to Lake George which is going to add a couple of miles (cuz you'd have parked at George unless you strategically placed 2 cars). I'd also suggest trying a start from Duck Lake trailhead to Duck and then on to Purple Lake and back...this is a long one though...I think 16ish miles roundtrip. Duck Lake is by far my favorite.
