The problem with the social media "private company" censorship thing is most of those companies are so large and almost a requirement in daily life they might as well be considered utility companies. Aside from that the larger ones aren't even technically private companies anyways, for example Facebook went public in 2012 and Twitter went public in 2013. If they want to claim to be private companies to maintain their full autonomy then they need to be removed from the stock market where they are publicly traded.
@cheetahman8592 жыл бұрын
Really, social media is a requirement for daily life? Are you sure? Because I can go days even weeks if not months without social media and it impacts my life not even a little bit. twitter and facebook arent private companys anymore, you could argue that their reach surpasses that of the state, like TV. So for those social media companys whining about being treated unfairly is disingenuous as free speech is basically a basic human right!
@jessecortez94492 жыл бұрын
It could be argued that they are not and maybe have never been private companies as they had heavy cash investments from government funds making them extensions of government. Same goes for tv since bills have been passed that grant government the capacity to use public broadcasting as means for propaganda. An example would be promoting military during football games, people today think that always happened but it only started a few years after the War on Terror was begun. Or even older, tv stations used to end broadcasting at night and have a sign off message playing the national anthem that had confirmed subliminal messages in it telling the viewer to obey the government. The constant whining from these companies is just to make you think they are independent free market companies when they are anything but that.

Big Tech has been needing to be regulated like a public utility for a long long time now. The number of active global users on Facebook (if to be believed) is half that of those in the world who have access to clean drinking water which is a lot. The irony in the new duckduckgo filtering is that it's now pushed quite a few people towards using Yandex. For me it was never about the privacy, that can be addressed with handling how you search intelligently. It was about the results not being filtered based on politics or other stupid irrelevant reasons.
@FactFinderGeneral2 жыл бұрын
They were already being filtered, ALL search engines filter politically as well as for relevancy, especially the ones that pull from other peoples databases. If you think Yandex, Bing, Google, InsertHere, don't have political leanings you are sorely mistaken.

A lot of people don't understand that DuckDuckGo is not it's own independent search engine. It was always just about privacy, and always bias because of the nature of how it pulls result. Every search is bias as mentioned. There was also pressure from the EU on companies to help tackle Russian propaganda (though apparently Ukrainian propaganda was ok, which is it's own issue). Yet another issue of "influencers" blowing smoke and the sheep in the community following along. A lot of folks in the privacy community pretend to know what they're talking about and unfortunately a lot of those with big followings fall in that category. But, given the history that the west has been like the toxic and manipulative ex, I have a hard time believing their narratives too. When we claim stories from Russia are false claims, we never gave the same amount of scrutiny to what the West is saying. How many people knew that the soviet union wanted to join NATO in the past? Or that NATO bombed yugoslavia and no one from the UN condemned them? Or that NATO didn't respect its assurances to Russia that NATO wouldn't expand eastward? And the security guarantee too? None of this is new. When companies take a side, especially when they can influence a huge number of people using there tech, it should be called out. We are essentially siding with a narrative from a group who is known to be manipulative. Russia too is manipulative. No doubt there. But companies doing this is bad on various levels.

Example: [user searches]$ 'russian news' -> Search engine that is focused more on showing the most relevant content than the most accurate shows the user major websites for Russian news, even if they spread misinformation, because that's what the user asked for -> Search engine that is focused more on showing the most accurate quality content than the most relevant down-ranks websites with low-quality content and may even show foreign websites with news ABOUT Russia You see the problem? The 'unbiased' search is the search that focuses on relevance, trusting the user to know and check the content for accuracy. The biased search (or of the types of biased searches) focuses on accuracy more than on relevance, which makes it a nanny that tries to teach the user to consume only quality content. I'm not saying the latter is a bad thing in itself, if the user subscribed to it willingly, but DDG was promoted as an unbiased search, which implies it should also not be biased against low-quality content when the user requests it. And yes, down-ranking is soft censorship. If you don't want the users to consume the info you don't like and for that you down-rank it, down-ranking is a censorship tool. If it didn't work in such a way that users consume less stuff that you disagree with, it wouldn't even have been used in this case. Because the PRIMARY GOAL is to censor, don't delude yourself defining censorship by methods instead of the goal.

up you go. There are some people pretending that every search engine is biased, to justify theirs. Just like they pretend everyone else does the other bad things they do.

Agreed! The backlash, plus the marketing, makes no sense from start because any search engine will have inherent biases - like it or not - it's a search engine. Thinking how they are gonna present results of a search is basically all they do, so there isn't really a "non-biased" search engine - they all pass through sequences of filters and decisions on what should be shown first and last to some degree. It's their job. Even more unfortunate, they are all black boxes without any possibility for external audits and evaluations, so you need to always assume they have a whole bunch of biases introduced by developers, knowingly or not. On the other hand, it could also be said that the lack of transparency is one of those things that allows these search engines to work more or less independently. They will suffer threats and warnings from authoritarian regimes and whatnot, but as the methods aren't transparent or clear to the public, they end up with some leeway to work outside such constraints. But then, perhaps more importantly - it's Bing, Yahoo and well... was Yandex with an obfuscation layer, so it'll always have the inherent biases contained in those search engines in the first place. Other search engines will have the inherent biases of the ones they use, or of the original authors anyways. Prioritization of search results will always have some parameters that could be seen as cultural, commercial, political, ideological and whatnot. And this is also valid for all other search engines. Google and those that uses it, Brave, it doesn't matter. Censorship, manipulation, prioritization and de-prioritization... they exist in all search engines. I guess it's also worth noting - if we're talking about fake news, conspiracy theories, racist and sexist content, anti-LGBT, adult content, plus a whole host of other stuff - de-prioritization and censoring is definitely not new, it has always been there from the beginning, and all major search engines are doing it in some level, whether they announced it publicly or not. It's just part of balancing search results for relevance, fitting it to be in accordance to the search engine interested parties, and eliminating problematic content that will attract criticism. Search engines are not neutral, they are all businesses. They could be more or less pro privacy and security, but in the end, you are taking the black box word for it. There is so much complexity put into it that it becomes almost impossible for people to verify that sort of stuff independently. Another semi-related point of contention, people should also know that any search engine operating in certain countries with a censorship heavy government to the point of being part of law, they also comply with those. People got all up in arms about Google entering Chinese market (project Dragonfly was the name if I'm not mistaken), not many knew that Microsoft had been doing it for almost a decade when the controversy popped up. But despite huge worries and huge backlash at the time, with some outlandish claims thrown in, it really mattered little because despite Bing being in China almost since it's inception, it doesn't scratch the surface of Chinese own internal search engines. Baidu is their Google, no other search engine comes close. Google wouldn't really have a huge presence in China if it had entered the market back then. My guess it's likely be a bit above Bing if much nowadays, because when it comes to search engines, precedence is a huge point, plus Google does not have it's tentacles spread around as much in China as it has in western nations. Google's idea was to enter the market to at least have some level of influence, but that never materialized. gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share/all/china On the other hand, Russia has a heavy reliance on Google... Yandex is bottom tier bellow Bing. Just to note. I won't be the judge of what situation is better - Google compromising on western ideals and submitting to Chinese law to at least have a presence there, or just refusing to enter the market on principles - but just so people have a clearer idea on this - Google was never gonna "take the entire Chinese market" or have an overwhelming influence there in the first place, with or without compliance to censorship - because the Chinese market is not the western market. People often don't know or don't fully understand how different the Internet landscape is there, we just assume it's more or less similar to ours. But it isn't. It could as well be a different planet... the western giants all at most playing second fiddle for Chinese platforms, when not having almost zero presence and influence there. It's all the more significant when you consider almost a fifth of the world's population lives there... there's no bigger single market. So yeah... there ya go. o/

@@buddysdz Buddy, try registering a Phone number in the EU without doxing yourself, your family, and your dog. Look, it might not be explicitly illegal, you could for instance acquire a sim-card through a company - even a shell company - which could grant you some anonymity. As an private entity however, you will have to dox yourself every time.
