"I am" - for this line Tennant should get an Emmy. I mean it is SO POWERFULL. . Have you noticed that the plane moving to one side or another and getting off balance represented their family status threw the eintire episode? As they were fighting and falling appart while the plain was dangeling and stablilized when they worked together in harmony? And then at the end... it crashed. . And the storyboading and light/color work is PERFCT in this episode, it's art! . It doesn't seem like a coincidence that Della's thirst for adventure peaks right about when she's about to become a mother of three, and just compounding the tragedy of things- all indications are that Della was a hardcore adrenaline junkie, and about to be faced with a ton of responsibility and her opportunities drying up, she takes an outright suicidal risk to get one last high in. But even though that Scrooge and Donald likely both know intellectually that it was Della's own fault first and foremost, neither of them are going to be able to blame her after everything that's happened.
@PokemonkaDub6 жыл бұрын
Yes, she was so irresposible and SELFISH in this act. And who sufferes most? Donald. No really, they argued before she disapeard, so he lives not only with the burden of (like Scrooge) feeling guilty that he couldn't persuade her better, but also he lost a TWIN SISTER the closest family anyone can ever get, he has to raise her kids by himself and worst of all. his last words to her probably were not kind at all, probably insults, because they argued right before she set off. You can say that boys suffered more but... no. They were loved and cared for, they did not know her, so they can not miss her by any means, they might feel the lack of her in their lifes ofcourse, but they do not feel the loss, unlike Donald and Scrooge. She didn't think about others, just so she can satisfy her own thirst of adventure, she hurt everyone she claimed to care about. She doesn't deserve to be called the victim here. You are absolutely right, and no one will admit it because "you shouldn't speak bad about those who are gone".

KingOfElectricNinjas The fact that Donald and Scrooge in the end probably wouldn't place blame on Della at all kinda upsets me. A few things I did notice in the flashbacks about Della as a person. When Donald and Della argued about going to space, you see how Donald was protective of the triplets while Della wasn't. And how Scrooge tells that Della was stubborn and how impulsive she was to steal the ship before Scrooge gives it to her. It gives me the impression that Della is a person that wasn't mature enough to start a family. She laid the triples yet she was still yearning for an adventure into space. She's impulsive and stubborn. I feel like the whole Duck family knew that and Della went missing not because of Scrooge, but because of herself. But they can't cope with it which is why Scoorge is used an escape goat since he was the one who built the ship.
@megelizabeth94926 жыл бұрын
I can get behind that. Especially if you take the prequel comics as cannon, because they are... problematic, to say the least. At first, I wasn't sure if it was intentional or not, but I kinda think it was. Scrooge probably shouldn't have built the rocket, but Della is a fully capable adult, and she owns her decision to steal it.

I'm referring to the show's tie in comics. Della does appear briefly in Life and Times with Donald as children, but traditionally hasn't had much of a presence in duck comics. More recently, she has been in a few Dutch one pagers, focusing on her and Donald as kids though.

This was also probably the absolute worst time for them to find out. They were trapped in a (literally) precarious, emotionally charged, high stress situation. I mean, the episode was uncomfortably tense for the viewers, so imagine what the characters were feeling. It's literally a tinderbox, just waiting for any little spark to go up.
@averyscott94674 жыл бұрын
I feel like it makes sense though. While I believe the triplets all equally love their mother, solving the mystery is more important for Dewey. Not because he cares more, but because he can’t cope with being motherless as well as his brothers can. His feelings of loneliness and neglect we see repeatedly throughout the series are escalated by not knowing whether his mother went missing or simply abandoned him. So his anger is less driven by actual anger at Scrooge, but more so his unstable feelings toward his mother’s disappearance.

This was the episode that made me put it high, right next to Gravity Falls. The best part of this episode was the animation of Scrooge. I love how they animated him during the part where he explains what happened to Della. I especially loved his facial expression in the line, "[ ]... until you three showed up at my doorstep." He was legitimately happy that he got to spend time with Huey, Dewey and Louie. He loved getting respect and admiration from his nephews. Which the ones proceeding that line all the more heartbreaking. He became angry and hurt that he is losing their respect and admiration, not just from his nephews but also from Mrs. Beakley and Webby- whom, may i remind you, was just given permission to call him Uncle Scrooge. The crowning achievement was the hot tears during the line "I am". That is a serious gut-wrenching moment right there. Like, he had lost Della and Donald in the past. Now he is losing not just his nephews, but Beakley and Webby.

I adore the balance of tone and focus in this episode. It’s a shame that Donald had to be absent for the story to play out the way it did, because it’s SUCH a great juggling act of every main character at their best. Speaking of Donald though, anyone else notice the framing around 4:20 is almost identical to the first scene between Donald and Dewey in the show’s first episode. A REALLY subtle call back emphasizing how much of this season’s story has belonged to Dewey, I think.
@brianlevine8716 жыл бұрын
The Ponderer As much as I enjoyed this reboot and admire the execution of its family theme, the lack of Donald really hindered the full potential it could've had. For instance, I would've expected Donald to join Scrooge and co. on much more of those trips around the world just to keep a closer eye on his nephews, and maybe still argue with Scrooge about their past experiences. But since their conflict was hardly explored, and his last several appearances were basically pointless cameos, they might as well have sent Donald to the Navy like in the original "Ducktales." Of course I wasn't expecting Donald to be every episode, but I at least expected him to be treated as a main character, not just an occasional guest. Not to mention how they could've developed a relationship between him and Webby. Not only did she admire him in the pilot as 'one of the most daring adventurers of all time,' but he probably could've bonded with Webby and also see a bit of Della in her, and maybe she (along with the nephews, of course) could've joined him on some action later down the line. Again, it's still a great series, and this episode was very powerful, but it really could've used more Donald. Hopefully, the second season will rectify that.
@megelizabeth94926 жыл бұрын
The problem is that Donald simply wouldn’t want to be there. Unless you can unite him and Scrooge against a common Enemy, like Gladstone, he’s just going to be kinda miserable.

Brian Levine I trust we’ll get Donald having a bigger role in future seasons, especially if/when Della reappears and becomes an active character. Skytower Gnome She might’ve as she knew about Scrooge’s family in the first episode in ways of having avoided them for 10 years. This story was beautiful, poetic, heartbreaking and just the right kind of episode to lead us into the season finally. I loved how the boys did feel betrayed because they were. Donald probably didn't tell them because he was too broken up himself at the loss of his sister and best friend, and how could he tell his nephew's that their mom left them right before they hatched to go on one last adventure without even seeing them born. I cannot wait for the last episode of the season and seeing how everything comes together.

I'm not happy with Della either. But I think her fate was foreshadowed in the comics. In the Ducktales 2017 comics, Donald is always telling Scrooge and Della that they could have avoided certain dangers if they had only listened to him (Correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while since I read them). But they got out of those situation without needing Donald's advice for the most part, which led to an ego boost/ overconfidence in both Scrooge and Della. This overconfidence is what led to the Spear of Selene incident.

Late reply but I just finished watching season 1 and I think there's something that a lot of people don't think about. Scrooge doesn't get the chance to explain it more. He tells them what happened then gives them a short moment to take it in when suddenly Dewey says 'Cool, so you're the reason our mum is gone' and you can see the shock on his face from how sudden and cold that was. He keeps trying to explain but the other triplets join in to assume things and that line about the money bin must have been devastating. Then he gets angry at Webby when she joins in and shouldn't have said it like that but the meaning did make sense, it's a matter of the people who knew their mother and it's not her place to say something like that. It was already a high stakes, intense situation where he'd already been thinking about how he lost her and how he didn't want something like that to happen ever again. You can see how desperate he is when he tells Dewey that he can't keep him safe and he hadn't spoken about this for years, as soon as he heard 'Spear of Selene' he started crying. That's a lot to take in at once. You can't blame the children though either because they're children, it's also devastating for them. Still, this is pretty much a testament to how amazing the writing for the episode was and how it can even affect adults in a powerful way, especially with the 'I am' scene at the end, really powerful and leads all the way back to the start of the season where you see that the money bin isn't very full.

Best comment I've read analysing this intense scene, but scrooge actually explain it well but the boys didn't listen and misunderstood scrooge explanation specifically he's line "I spare no expense" if you analyse it more, he actually meant, he didn't spare any effort and money in finding della which is actually what he really did, but the boys r just too stubborn to put all the blame to scrooge

You could feel how much he misses her and he needs her in his life. He was ready to throw his life away to find out what happened to her. Scrooge was another beautifully written character. This is probably my favourite portrayal of Scrooge. Shows that what he values the most is not his gold but his family. A lot of people misjudge Scrooge and say he is a greedy Ahole while in truth he always cares about his family. Top 10 animated episodes of all time, right here!

Personally, I think Donald blame mostly Scrooge about Della because Scrooge was probably the one who influence Della's adventuring hobby in the first place, as well as the one who always provide the kits to make it possible. Also, Donald probably think back then, that now that Della's about to be a mom, it's time for her to finally stop the adventures altogether, but unfortunately, Scrooge encourage Della even further on her adventuring hobby instead, despite the fact that she's about to become a parent by giving her the spear of silene, and thus the incident. I'm not saying that Della is innocent tho, she clearly deserve lots of the blames too, I'm just saying that seeing it on Donald's perspective, it actually make sense if he blame Scrooge for the most part as Donald probably see him as the reason of why Della couldn't quench her thirst for adventures, and he probably would be angry at Della about it too if they meet again, I mean... in the christmas episode when young Donald was still just an emo loner, we learned that Della was most likely the one who taught him about the importance of spending time together as family, it's probably what makes him tag along with Scrooge and Della all the time on their adventures back then, to spend more time with his family. Sorry for the long essay, I know YT comment isn't exactly the best place to share theories, but I just wanna share at least some of my opinion about this.

This episode was literally amazing. One of the best pentultimate episodes of any series ever, creating such a huge emotional attachment. I've been a fan of Scrooge and his adventures since the original Ducktales, throughout over 400 issues of comic books, and through every episode of the series so far. This episode's ending literally brought tears to my eyes as I watched its conclusion, and even knowing (as it would) that things would get eventually resolved, the voice acting, writing, and animation were so superb, so well-executed, that it created a huge emotional impact for me, and I'm sure for many others as well. Thank you for exploring that experience with us as well. Looking forward to your thoughts on the finale!

I feel like this episode came too soon after the episode where Huey and Louie found out. A buffer of one or two episodes might have been good. Like everyone else in the comments, I agree that Della had her part to play in all this and I hope the next episode at least floats the idea that Della shares the blame. Predictions for the Finale - We know the basic plot from the trailer. - Donald will hopefully point out to the boys that Della wasn't perfect either and had her part in all of this. - The boys will of course find out everything Scrooge did to find Della and Louie and Huey will forgive him, but Dewey won't as his character arc from the previous episode about letting things go is still incomplete. It's possible he and Scrooge will learn this lesson together. - Magica De Spell will seize upon Scrooge's vulnerability and possibly Webby's to get into the mansion and revive, but the actual revival probably won't happen until the last minute so season 1 ends on a cliffhanger.

Given the argument about the episode order earlier, I wouldn't be surprised if there originally was the one or two buffer episodes

I saw the final moments of this episode in passing while getting some food. Just happened to be on TV at the time. It is what got me into the series at all. It's an awesome character moment that sold me on giving the series a chance, all on its own. And I'm so grateful for that, because nothing has made me smile wider in the last few years than Ducktales.

Oh my god. How did I not get this until now? When the ducklings are gushing over the expo at the beginning of the episode, they quote a line directly from the theme song. Huey: "Race cars." Webby: "Lasers!" Launchpad: "Aeroplanes?" Just missing someone calling it a "duckblur."

I have a theory regarding the other astronauts sent to look for Della: I noticed they were all dogs. What if they were the Beagle Boys in disguise, and never took the rockets themselves into space as a way to swindle Scrooge out of his fortune? That would explain how Della was never found by any of them - because not a single one of them ever intended to actually look!

Like I said in the last two videos (which, way to catch up in time, Sean, that's a minor miracle you pulled off!), this is the most painful episode I've ever sat through. And I mean painful from a story perspective, not from a 'this episode is bad' perspective. This episode's amazing. But it's also sort of nuclear. I'm not just excited for the season finale...I kind of need it. Magica, who I was all hyped about from Lena's very first appearance, has already become the episode's "B-plot" in my mind...I need to see this amazing, awesome, brilliant family get back together.

...I wasn't even aware that the plane had a name. My annoyance with the boys took me out of this episode. They seemed excessively selfish, reckless, heedless of the danger their actions were putting on others....And dumb! Blaming Scrooge for 'letting' their mother do something dangerous?! They don't obey Scrooge or stay out of danger, so what the [incoherent Donald-esque swearing] makes them think their mother would have been any different?! I totally understand Scrooge's anger/resentment at the end of this. Though I was very amused at the thought of Della going through a Fantastic Four Origin type of event....

Speaking of bottle episodes, one of my favorite movies is Alfred Hitchcock’s the rear window, the bottle episode of movies, a murder mystery set exclusively but the dramatic climax from the same few cameras. It’s great, and shows that even something as conceptually corrupt as trying to be as cheap as possible to make an easy bit of money, can become brilliant

Well done! I couldn't have made a better review. You nailed it on the head this game changing episode. And after seeing the entire season it is the crossroads episode that will still have lasting effects and consequences as we go from Season One to Season Two. I look forward to your in-depth review of the Shadow War Season finale episode.

watching this video five years later, it is just as sad... actually no, a lot sadder after watching the last adventure, all because of the line ''this is a family matter, you are not family'', don't know if the writers had the final twist in mind when they wrote this, if they didn't, it made the line more painful

The part where Scrooge told his story and everybody got mad at him, that was as heartbreaking as the part where Della punished Louie in Timephoon, after nearly destroying time and space.

I jsut notice that Dewey reacted exactly like Della. Both of them were searching for something (answers for Dewey et adventures for Della). They put their life in danger, pushing further and further and Scrooge tried to stop them. Also I have the impression the reason why the vulturs always tried to cut Scrooge's budget is because he spent too much when he tried to look for Della.

I do really like this cartoon of its own merit, but I can’t help noticing coincidental parallels to Gravity Falls: the kids falling into distrust of their great-uncle because of a secret involving the disappearance of another family member reminds me of the lead-up to the Stan Twins reveal. I find it interesting to wonder what would’ve happened if the Pines family had fallen apart like the Ducks did here in an alternate ending to Not What He Seems: Mabel ends up shutting down the Portal because she trusts Dipper about its hazards (she just isn’t sure if Stan isn’t in over his head, instead of being sure he’s a bad person like Dipper thought), but Stan freaks out over the Portal Shutdown and they devolve into a furious argument. Then, at the kids’ request, Stan tells them the reason he opened the Portal and the disappearance of Ford, leaving Dipper angry that Stan so irrationally lashed out at his own twin (and the Author, no less) and powered up a machine so dangerous, while Mabel’s faith in Stan is redeemed but she’s left distraught at the news of the Stan Twins having pushed each other apart. Soos is torn between the views of the two twins so clings to Stan’s reasoning, but Stan pushes him away like Scrooge does to Webby because this is a “family matter”, upsetting Soos. Which, I guess, means we’d be missing out if we didn’t see an alternate path of DuckTales canon where the Ducks go the way of the Pines in canon NWHS and ATOTS: Scrooge never reveals the Spear of Selene story early, because he was instead inspired to find a way to search for Della; he builds it as a secret project he keeps from the kids, but it’s dredged up and the kids’ faith in him is put in jeopardy until one of the kids puts their trust in him and allows him to use the project, then Scrooge tells them about Della after the fact.

Everyone is arguing about if Scrooge is to blame or Della is. And i think it's a little of both. But we can all agree that, Donald handled the situation perfectly and was more willing than Della to leave everything behind for the sake of those children.
