I don't know if you remember this, but I heard years ago, when an autistic kid hexbug battlebot broke, the father sent it to you and you took a picture of it on top of tombstone and made that kid's world. That same kid was me, I'm 15 and I'm taking drafting and learning to design Roller Coasters. Thank you for what you have done for me, and I still have the autograph you signed framed at my bedroom desk.

Big fan of all involved, but the DP guys leaning on the polycarb didn't make me too happy - I know a lot of it is edited / scripted but that box breach wasn't a great look imo. Still, only thing that stopped you was for blip to eject stinkeye from the arena! 😂
@ray93682 ай бұрын
Yeah I do agree it probably wasn't completely perfect in how it was scripted/edited. But I'm still thinking this was a net positive to the sport. We got a lot of fresh eyes seeing this for the first time, and some of them will find their way to an event, maybe to watch and maybe some day to compete. That's my hope anyway. I can tell you it was a lot of fun to be involved in, and I'd jump at the chance to do it again if they called. And yeah, for a robot that I never intended really to ever do anything other than look cool at ONE event, I've managed to get a lot of use out of Stink Eye. It's still complete and mostly ready for more!

The bots were just a product they hired and modified for making the video. They didn't credit the makers of the sheet metal either. If Ray and Aren and their teams wanted more credit, they should have negotiated that in the contract. Giving credit would've been nice, but it's not necessary.

I personally really enjoyed both videos despite the how obviously scripted its was. I'm gonna be honest I thought it was genuine up until the table dropped from the ceiling, I'm not the brightest. I didn't recognize brimstone until stink eye came out and it was a shock to see blip there. I was well entertained and simultaneously appalled by the questionable safety of some moments, blip should NOT have been firing with as much power as it was towords the drivers box. It was battlebots mixed with KZbinr slop and I absolutely ate it up. This alongside the BB collab with AMP has been interesting to see with how the sport is presented to the general audience by experienced KZbinrs.

It is good that famous names are contacting and collaborating with you. I haven't heard of either Dude Perfect or Mark Rober but it seems like they do some cool stuff. Also, I have been wondering this every time I see the big yellow round robot that was in the intro fighting: What is its weapon? I tried taking closer looks at it but so far I have not ben able to figure it out (It is visually a good bot though). Something else that came to my mind when you mentioned 3D printing a battery box will it be possible to do something similar for the motor and gearbox unit and somehow have it so that it is internally held in place and also externally clamped onto the frame?
@ray93682 ай бұрын
3d printing is becoming more and more a necessary component of building combat robots. Because of the wide variety of filament types available, you can print flexible items, structural items, even significant armor for smaller weight classes. And in fact there are events where the rules state that the entire robot has to be printed. I'd say the limits here are only your imagination.
@thisladsamystery2 ай бұрын
@@ray9368 Ok, thanks for the reply. I didn't know some comps want people to make the whole bot out of 3D printing. So going forwards would you say the battery box will be the only major printed part on Tombstone or would you also try to make something for the drive system? I have seen many battles where the wheel gets ripped off so I thought doing something like that may strengthen it and also hold it in place rather than it getting thrown off the bot? (just a thought that came to mind but i am not sure if it will work?)
@ray93682 ай бұрын
@@thisladsamystery In the larger robots I pretty much limit 3D printed parts to internal components that won't get hit. So battery boxes would be top of that list, along with mounts for electronics. In a heavyweight I wouldn't use any of that stuff for drivetrain components though at this point
@thisladsamystery2 ай бұрын
@@ray9368 Ok, understood. Wondering, why do you say you would limit 3D printing to things that won't get hit? My understanding was that you are using the printed box in case someone hits the back of the bot? I thought the point in using printing was to help better absorb and spread the force on the bot? So I used the same logic when I suggested holding the drive system in place. (Did I misunderstand the reason for using printing?) Either way, do you think also holding the motor and gear box setup internally in addition to where it is held from now help avoid the system getting ripped off?
@ray93682 ай бұрын
@@thisladsamystery The battery boxes I print out of TPU, which is a flexible material. Sort of like stiff rubber, although nowhere near as heavy. This allows the batteries to be held securely, but also provide some flexibility to manage shock loads. We've been using this setup for Mortician for the last few years with great success. In smaller weight classes, TPU also can work for structural components, even some armor, since the smaller classes tend to just fly away from large hits rather than get shredded. But as the weight of the robots go up, this starts to go the other way with large hits shredding the armor instead of just tossing the robots away. We are routinely cutting through the toughest grades of steel available, so 3D printed material just isn't going to stack up in a heavyweight. That's why on heavier robots I would never use 3D printed material in a spot where it might get hit by a weapon.
