I remember hearing a story like this in magic the gathering. opponent is storming off with a combo deck called Pros Bloom. The Deck wins by drawing almost your entire library on turn 4 or 5, then casting a game ending "Drain Life" to win. well in the story that i heard the Pros Bloom player combos off, casts the drain life, and his opponent asks to see the card. totally fine, happens all the time. Well back in the 90's people played without sleeves so his opponent just ate the card, and then called for a deck check, saying his opponent was only playing with 59 cards. the wild things people will do to win.

While eating opponent's cards doesn't really happen at events or anything; plenty of times people will have cards go missing between rounds or games (usually someone would have just stolen the high value cards because tons of theft at card events((literally there are groups of people who go to events not to play but just to steal shit))) but yeah if a card goes missing or is damaged then a judge is called and you get a game loss; if there's still another game in the match they give you like 5-10 mins extension to get a replacement be that borrow from a friend or buy from vendors. If you stilllll don't get a replacement then you take that match L and have to try again to get a replacement before the next round otherwise you straight up have to drop out of the event if you can't.
