Got rid of the saddle tanks so you could run 64 inch leaves in the rear that actually flexed and wouldn’t explode from side impacts, stronger frames and better designed steering that wasn’t trying to pry the steering box off the frame anytime you turned the wheel. The Squares are timeless, the GMT800s are probably the best truck GM ever made, and the GMT400s have a mix of both that’s greater than the sum of its parts

1988 in a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton 4x4 was the first year of the OBS body style and independent front suspension, but the 3500 4x4 held on a few more years with the solid front axle and square body depending on if it was a GMC or Chevy .

Suburbans too. Those weren't OBS though, just "classic" trim carry over years. Chevrolet loves doing that, they did the same thing in 99-01 with the "classic" 3/4 and 1 ton trucks still being OBS trucks, the tahoe carrying over the OBS body style as the "limited" until 2000, the cat eye body style lasted until 07 as the "classic" and on and on. I'm a Ford guy, but we had a 91 with a 4.3 in the 2500 w/t 4x4. That creeper gear was handy with the v6. Despite the power, it did all it was asked of. The boss liked it so much that he replaced the box and the cab corners when they rusted. When I stopped out 6 years ago, it had a fresh coat of white paint and one of the guys donated a 400 and it was rebuilt and stuffed in. I told him it felt like it finally had its right engine. It's got holley efi now and the climate control still cooks and freeze on demand. I respect them

SM466 while not having the OD of the NV4500 is an absolute unit of a transmission. I had one that was pissing from the top of the countershaft seal so it was only being lubricated by splashing about 3/4 of a quart of gear oil. Was gonna drive it that way until it gave out and replace with an NV, went 2 years and then sold the truck to a buddy who swapped in an NV3500, cracked into that SM and you would’ve thought it had just rolled off the production line.

I had a dozen of those trucks over the years, only complaint I ever had was the stupid dash setup, in a square body I could fit monday thru fridays coffee cups on the dash, in theses models I had to take my cup in every night, I had a small fleet of these back in my roofing days

Had bought one of these off my great uncle for $125. Sat for years in the grass. Used it as a learning experience for expanding my knowledge about cara/trucks. I got it to run and drove it around a couple times. That 350 sounded mean as hell with no cat or muffler! Unfortunately, when I decided to do a tranny fluid and filter 3 of the pan bolts snapped off. I broke 3 easyouts trying to get them out. Decided that was the end for old girl and sold it to a junk yard.

My 94 has this safety feature where you can start it and then the key comes out of the ignition. So I can leave it running on my morning beer run before work
