@@boldee101 Tell us about your machining skills then? What type of dissimiliar metals is this man working with that would pose a problem for welding? What type of rod should be used for this? How many years have you worked on a metal lathe?
@boldee1014 ай бұрын
@@tabcreedence6553 45 years as a machinist working all manner of machines including manual lathes in industry and research, 25 years in space research having the honour to work on a number of ground breaking projects including instruments for the James Webb Space Telescope, I have things I have made orbiting Earth, Mercury, Mars and on the surface of Mars, I have also worked on instruments that are currently being used in the early detection of cancer, so there are my qualifications to be critical. Do you think our friend knows about the properties of the materials being used here and there compatibility? Do you think he even considered there compatibility beyond them both being ferrous materials? Do you think he ascertained the fatigue levels in the components being repaired and how safe it would be to repair? What about the longevity of the repair? My guess would be that we are looking at a very old fatigued component made of cast steel so he could probably us any old welding rod he gets hold of, I doubt very much that he has a lot of choice or even knows their constituents. Where they guy excels is the ingenuity of the repair, he isn't a good machinist, he isn't a good welder, he works with what is at hand and he certainly isn't stupid. So after all that, what I was laughing at was the stupid comments that people make when 99% of them have no clue about what they are commenting on.

beautiful work! I was thinking press fit it all then weld. but you single-pointed everything and threaded it together then welded for a much higher strength. probably need that since it is for heavy equipment. you single point cut those threads real quick too. always takes me longer to do that. i like the dychem technic. coat the surface then thread until the paint is gone. I'll have to try that trick. instead of messing with my fancy thread mics.

not to nitpick, but I personally would have taken a little bit more time in welding that adapter. I saw too many voids and inclusions. Not good where water is a potential concern in the environment. Allows for easier egress of water into the weld seam thus oxidize/rust build up, thus failure/breakage yet again. If its worth doing, it's worth doing right - the first time.

Fist you see all the voids in that weld and freak out. Then you think to yourself: It is a threaded joint, the weld is there just to keep it from rotating; its gonna hold. Then you notice the gear teeth and realize that the load path is rotational, not axial... What happens when you try to turn a nut loosely screwed on a bolt held in place by a chewing gum?
