I was raised in a cult in Texas and spent my first twenty years there. My mom was also born and raised there. The topic of cults (not just religious cults, btw) is important and I'm glad you're covering it. I eventually left, which sounds logical and easy to an outsider. Leaving a cult equates to you (cult member) severing ties with God. God gave you a precious gift of "the truth" and you threw it back in his face. It's not just leaving a church. You leave your ENTIRE life behind and turn to a world you were taught is evil and waiting to "tear you apart." Brainwashing and influence cannot be under-estimated. I'm always open to talking about it in hopes to help others escape.

A few years ago you did a series on "Welcome to Plathville" and this family also is within the IBLP direction. Back then you kind of didn't seem to know that much about it, maybe you could rewatch it with your knew research about modern christian cults? They are extremely interesting because they went public with all their drama and also the survivors are very vocal about their experiences

Great idea. And also react to his own reaction. Until the end, he approved of them. He agreed with the mother many times, ignoring so many red flags. He went through the same cycle many people went through. Believing what was in front of the camera with little concern of how that came to be.

Please watch the episode where Josh Duggar’s wife is pregnant and she needs to get up from the table and he won’t move so she has to crawl under the table to get out. They had another couple with them and they were being filmed. So many examples of contempt. Having her drag in all the luggage, sleeping while she was in labor. And of course worse. I stopped following their show because of this treatment. Long before everything else came out. So excited you are doing this!❤

I messaged you on Instagram with the link to a play I remember from my childhood (one of many) Thank you for your response. I do want to add to this conversation - I think it’s very important to address and recognize that even people (such as myself) who were not highly influenced or involved in extremely fundamental or IBLP affiliated teachings are deeply traumatized by the roots of the evangelical belief system. To be taught that evil is always lurking around and WITHIN your body and mind is HIGHLY traumatizing. When a highly jealous, wrathful and ever present authority figure is programmed into the core of your being, you never ever feel safe in your body or mind. It is important to distinguish the differences in denomination and affiliation with groups like IBLP, but the problematic and unconsentual indoctrination I mentioned is absolutely grounds for criticism of the entirety of evangelical Christianity. Thank you for discussing this issue ❤️

Edit: I am not part of this cult nor have I ever been. Michael and Debi Pearl are horrible! I read Created to Be His Helpmeet because there was a women’s group that was about to study the book. I don’t think they knew what they were getting into. The book is so ridiculously horrible! Debi Pearl promotes so much abuse from husbands while dishing out her own abusive gaslighting. It’s disgusting. In one of my therapy sessions, I ended up talking about the book (which was not my original intention), and she was equally as disgusted, especially since she had heard that it’s a great book. Her eyes were so opened by false advertising targeted towards Christian families seeking wholesome application. However, the book promotes the complete opposite-entitlement, abuse, enmeshment, so much.

Your discussion on the topic of pop culture was so my mother. Heavy metal, punk, rap , all of it was demonic to my mother. I wasn’t allowed to listen to anything other than saccharine pop music like Debbie Gibson or classical music. Television shows that didn’t have a traditional family like Full House or Who’s The Boss were corroding America according to my mother. MTV was destroying America according to my mother. I went to public school but grew up isolated because my mother was such a religious fundamentalist and as a housewife she had time to be overbearing and doctrinaire. I missed out on so much that glues Gen X together.
@BekaB85 Жыл бұрын
Haha the person that condemned that song reminds me of the church I grew up in. I grew up not being allowed to listen to anything except "christian music" because secular music was evil and infecting our minds , I also did not have any cable or secular TV. Half of our music was just praising God and the other have was all about war and getting ready to fight in the end times and save ppls souls from hell. I was homeschooled and very isolated, i couldnt have any friends outside our very small church community. For years we were having revival and I would go to church every night from 7pm to like 3 am. The last several hours was always the alter call where we went up and got prayed for and were expected to fall out (they had ppl behind us to catch us, im very good at the trust fall lol) and speak in tongues , sometimes laugh uncontrollably in the spirit. It was interesting, one time everyone was laughing in the spirit and when and they came and prayed for me and tapped my head i didnt fall out or laugh so the pastor started tickling me to make me laugh, weird, i was like 12. Outside of the church i was extremely isolated, the science i learned being homeschooled is very debatable or just flat out wrong. When I grew up and left I was lost in life.... I went on a rant, my bad.
@hazelangus Жыл бұрын
I actually bought "To Train Up a Child" years ago. Not because I had kids - still don't - but because I was sceptical that it was as bad as people claimed. It was so much worse than they were saying, because it's difficult to convey just how terrible it is. It was so much worse than I could have imagined. Michael Pearl's sadistic glee at the thought of breaking children just oozes out of every page. "Wormholed" is an extremely good way to put it, because you feel like you've fallen into some sort of parallel universe, where good is called evil and evil is called not only good, but commanded - demanded - by God.

Sadly, I wasn't raised in this group, but my mother as a extreme, Evangelical Christian had many similar views. This is so common in many religions families. I'm the oldest of 6. (Two burnt batches is our joke). All of us have dealt with lots of trauma, abuses, and mental health struggles. All 5 of my siblings dealt with drug and alcohol issues, 3 have been homeless and on the streets. I'm a therapist now. I did years of my own intensive therapy and EMDR. Now I focus on Attachment and Trauma in childhood. I'm also registered with the Secular Therapy Project. There is so much religious trauma and we don't talk enough about it. I'm glad we're doing more, but silencing, control, and the "church" is a serious problem and many of us in these families have endured lots of abuse in the name of "god".

Thanks for covering so many important issues that affect so many people all over. I’d only ask you to not use the CP term and instead refer to it as what it is, CSAM. I was raised in a relatively inclusive assembly of God church and it still messed me up. Interestingly enough it didn't affect my brother the same way. Apparently telling young girls they brought forth all evil (Eve did eat the apple) and their bodies are bad isn't good for them. I find it interesting how much of my experience is shared with the iblp members I've heard speak out. The seeds of a lot of those teachings are in most if not all Christianity and those teachings are having an effect even in smaller doses.

I am pretty curious about the Duggars. I know kind of who they are, but I only heard a lot about Josh Duggar. I watched a few episodes of their TV show, but I never got into it. I Just remember being very concerned about how one woman can have so many children. This it pretty hazardous to a woman's health actually. And it's really hard on the children having so many siblings. You honestly can not watch all those kids and meet their needs, tend them all, and give them enough attention, love, and affection when they have just one father and mother. And from what I understand, they do not really have an extended family or tribe to look after all these kids either. That might sound silly the way I said it, but it used to be common in my culture for men to practice polygamy. But we used to be a tribal and nomadic culture. We had extended families who all took care of each other. Also, in our culture women had a say on how many children they wanted and when and if they wanted to have them. Especially since Islam was introduced to our society. Even the polygamist did not constantly have their wives pregnant and popping out babies. I would even say that one of the reasons for polygamy was to reduce the number of pregnancies on women in antiquity. It was the number one killer of women in those times. (The other main reason was to provide for widows and orphans. Back then men died in wars and raids constantly.) It wasn't the same of Mormon polygamist who want to have as many children as possible, because it's their belief that the more Mormon babies they have, the more greater rewards in heaven/paradise (or whatever they call the afterlife). We never thought that made logical sense. Even back in the old days. It still blows my mind that one father and mother have had all these children. I suspected childhood neglect could have played a huge role in Josh Duggars crimes against his sisters even. Also, the mom's health can not be good. I had 4 children and suffered complications the last two pregnancies and births. I can only imagine what the mom has gone through and the risks she is taking because she thinks its for some kind of greater good. I hope you do an update or include also the older daughters who are married. I hope that they are well and that they take care of their health. I hope they don't feel they have to uphold those harmful standards. We are allowed to evolve and improve our societies, regardless what religion we practice. Archaic customs and traditions oftentimes make no sense in today's world. There is space for adjustment. Just like polygamy is rare in our culture now. It's not necessary or useful anymore. So you can 'opt out' so to speak and not one judges us for it. lol 😊

Idk if she saw the irony there) and I knew religion wasn't for me. They were the exact types of Chruches that are actually ruining Christianity. But, maybe if I went to church in Western WA, where I live now and have since 2007, it'd have been better. I did go to a Synagogue a few times on mercer Island and I loved it. I don't understand why people idolized the Duggars and are shocked about the Dugger story. TV is highly edited and no family is perfect. Few is any families have no disagreements, conflict, or have all children that are content to raise their sibling, and kept from the larger society. At the end of the day, all people are just people regardless of their religion or anything else.

A bit concerned with your implication that Christians are cool so long as they are LGBTQ friendly even though the Bible they support says horrific things about gay people. I think its important to call that out, because regardless of whether or not they are cool with gay people, the religion they follow is not and has caused massive harm.
@Alayhoo Жыл бұрын
I couldn’t agree more. Along those lines, I’d also like to add that kindness doesn’t equal social justice. This person from Teach Better says it well: “Kindness has been reduced to being polite or not engaging with discomfort, even if that discomfort is experienced by the students and community members we care about. If we don’t name and label the issues and inequalities that are happening, our culture and the educational system have no hope of ending the injustices that happen in our schools, in our communities, and across our nation.” Just because some Christians are gay-friendly or generally kind, it doesn’t stop the vast majority of them from voting for laws and politicians that harm marginalized peoples and maintain systems of power and privilege. I don’t need people to be nice, I need them to engage in critical thinking and care beyond kindness.
@mygrinningcat Жыл бұрын
@@Alayhoointeresting line of thought. In my younger years I would have been 100% with you; even as my idealistic self I am 100% with you. But realistically some people just need the stuff and it's unkind to take the crutches from a limping man. If people need to park a certain part of their brain into godly certainty let's let them, especially when they choose a mild church/ cult.
@Alayhoo Жыл бұрын
@@mygrinningcat I don’t dispute that. Whatever helps people sleep at night and survive living in this world is what it is. What I take issue with is the lack of accountability for the harm a person or religion causes or contributes to by merely performing kindness while simultaneously voting for laws and politicians that seek to maintain social systems of privilege and oppression.

The fact he doesn’t realize every religion (even Christianity) is by definition a cult is very Christian of the doctor he didn’t have to explain his Christian upbringing to me when he excluded it (and it only) from calling things a cult.
