On Umberto talking about Bluey... I'm convinced this is actually a show about positive parenting disguised as a kid show.

I was homeschooled from 6th grade on and loved it. It gave me the option to travel all over the world, take my schoolwork with me, and spend a lot of time doing extra curricular activities that I enjoyed. It makes me sad so many people think of homeschoolers as a stereotype or under socialized. For me it gave me way more freedom and higher education (with options to take early college courses) than traditional school.

For me homeschooling was extremely isolating, I just sat in my room by myself all day. When I was around 23 I got the biggest compliment of my life. A coworker found out I was homeschooled and was shocked. She said that she could not believe I was one of those weird home school kids, she never would have guessed. That kinda sounds insulting but I felt I was so awkward and weird that it was written all over me so to hear other wise didn't just make my day it made my life.

I’m an atheist who was very into watching the Duggars’ show when it was airing, somewhat out of curiosity but I also enjoyed the wholesomeness to a degree. Watching it now that I’ve gone to therapy and learned a lot more about human psychology, so many of the issues are so obvious, but I think to many people who aren’t aware of those things it just seems sweet and light hearted. When you understand that perfect children are usually suppressed children, it’s so easy to see at least generally what’s going on.
@x1985 Жыл бұрын
Same exact experience here. It's both heartbreaking and a little refreshing to find out that things weren't all what they seemed. (not the abuse part obviously, just the fact that they aren't perfect after all. because they are human lol) I truly feel for all of the kids, and hope at least some of them follow in Jill's footsteps & break away from the cult.

It’s absolutely soothing to watch “wholesome” content. I love watching some family KZbinrs for that reason. Korean dramas (k dramas) aren’t popular just because they’re wholesome - they also have a slower pace, are usually character driven and often these days written from a female perspective. They are in my opinion nothing like the 80s American sitcoms, but I can see how they might look like that on the surface. I got sucked into the hallyu wave (the Korean influence on pop culture) because of my boomer parents, and now the whole family is hooked on k dramas and eat kimchi and bibimbap all year round! We used to mainly watch American shows, but now it’s Korean most of the time (we live in Finland).

My first experience in the US was with people like the Duggars, talk about culture shock. I was an exchange student and they were my assigned host family, a family with 8 kids. They were all homeschooled except for the youngest ones. I didn’t last long with them, I asked one too many questions in Sunday school about the Bible. They are wonderful people tho, I still keep contact with a few of them, but I was in for a shock. One of the first questions I was asked by one of the kids was whether I listened to secular music. Father was an ex pastor. They were not always super conservative, that kinda came with the step mom, and even then not to the extent of the Duggars, but I totally get their culture. I didn’t watch the Duggars, but I sure lived it.

I also hate how people are portrayed in 90 day fiance. It does a disservice to both the American person and the foreign person. It reinforces the stereotype that all foreign people are only interested in Americans to get documents or money and only Americans who are stupid/desperate/naive enough to fall for it date non Americans. I remember a marriage counselor from my religion saying that couples from the same culture have fewer cultural problems, but that does not equate to fewer problems total by any means. And that you can resolve most of them by asking questions with an open mind and openly explaining things to the other person. This has mostly been my experience with my partner from another country. I have even understood some things that he does better through reading books about the culture. There is not an inherent problem with intercultural marriages. The problem is that often one or both people are unwilling to research and adjust, even though they deliberately chose someone from a very different culture. But the show tries to ignore that because they want to avoid politics. I do know people in real life whose relationships played out in a similar fashion to 90 day fiance. I just wish that they sometimes showed wholesome couples who manage to productively communicate through the problems and who genuinely love each other. Because I know people like that too.

The reason Bluey and Blue’s Clues are both cartoons about “blue” dogs named Blue is because there is a coat color referred to as blue. Bluey is a narrative driven cartoon, while Blue’s Clues is a puzzle driven interactive show, so I think that’s the only link.
@bananawammabama Жыл бұрын
I agree there isn't really a link but I think Blue in Blue's Clues was more because they were trying to teach young children about colours i.e. there's another dog named Magenta. For Bluey it sounds right that it's more about the fact that it's about a "blue coated" dog like an Aussie Shepherd/ blue heeler.

However, I WAS able to disconnect from it when I got older, around in my 20s... my affection for the novels still exists however I really think the main reason I loved it so much was because that's the time I learned I loved reading in general, not just reading HP.

I understand the need for wholesome alternatives on demand for entertainment because of how darkly saturated our media is. I love things like Black Mirror and horror/gore but I've finally discovered that I can't sleep if I watch too much of it. What with the hollywood strike, more people are turning to new sources for entertainmen and finding that the wholesomeness is a balancing and appealing option. I personally use livestreams of animal shelters or zoo caretaker feeds and follow channels of people who just document their pet's life. I will specifically turn to that stuff when I notice myself getting sarcastic and numb to the dark stuff again.

I dont know why but i get soooo triggered by naming traditions where the son is given the father's name. It was a thing in my husband's family. All the oldest firstborn males bear their father's name (including my oldest). I broke tradition though and gave my son a middle name (which was against the rules) and that is what he goes by. I was homeschooled nearly all my life through the 90s and early aughts-as a Christian then and now, it’s still pretty maddening to see kids who were educated this way painted as automatons or legalistic hermits with no social skills or ability to think independently. The kids I knew were pretty brilliant; pursued all manner of degrees, cool careers, and had a wide range of beliefs. The Duggar documentary fell way short of offering a nuanced view of Christians who choose an alternate route to public/private school, but that wouldn’t fit the filmmaker’s narrative. But for the record, I grew up watching their show and thought they were extreme and not representative of my lived experience at all, even as a kid.

Hey, love your content and both of you guys just as people. Just wanted to let you know that the way you’re advertising your patreon is a little off-putting. Telling us this is just the free portion of the content. To say it at the beginning of the video, almost sets it off on a bad note like “oh this video is only going to be a snippet of content and I’m not gonna get the whole thing” and makes me feel like a “less than” viewer if I’m not paying you for extra content. Of course you want to reward your patreon viewers but you can say all that on your paid content to make them feel good instead of saying it so much on your regular videos. Most people could simply say it at the end of the video and say “please feel free to join us over on patreon where we will discuss this further and go into a deep dive I would love to see you over there and join that community” instead of putting a dollar value on your time and telling us over and over how much time you have to sacrifice to make this content.
