Saw this paraphrased from somewhere else, can’t remember where, but this is an interesting take on Godzilla’s world view and his reaction to his nuke-induced mutation: I was once the last of my kind. But you, in your quest for godhood, meddling with powers you could barely understand, you have changed me. Twisted me, into something unrecognizable. I am no longer the last of my kind. I am now the first, and I hate you all the more for it. Because of you, I have never been more alone.

It's a misconception that Godzilla is just a monster movie: it was intended from the beginning to represent the anger of a nation against the nuclear bombing in WW2. Minus One did very very well. Flashy Hollywood Zilla is a shame, even if in Japan also everything went downhill to a certain point, due to the monster's popularity.

Shin Godzilla was more mindless, Minus One actively hates humanity because he knows it was our bombs that changed him. The director has said he is in constant, severe pain from the massive increase in size. His body was never meant to be so large, every step he takes is excruciating. This is why he walks like a robot. He wants to inflict as much pain on humans as we've put him through. So, even the monster is as deserving of sympathy as the humans are.

I have seen Godzilla Minus One five times at the theater, with the last viewing in Minus Color. It's the only film I've watched this many times. Where to begin? The writing is excellent, featuring a tight script with great characters and a moving narrative where Godzilla serves as a powerful metaphor. The big G is not only a manifestation of the atomic bomb but also a haunting reminder of the guilt our lead character faces for his cowardice. This life-affirming film centers on a kamikaze pilot as the protagonist. The movie is filled with subtle clues, such as how Noriko survives the Ginza attack. Every time Godzilla is damaged, his skin falls off, and any living thing that comes into contact with his skin cells will heal, explaining Noriko's minor injuries in the end. Additionally, Shikishima’s head trauma and black eye are healed after exposure to the irradiated black rain following the blast, while The Kid remains in an arm sling. The writing is phenomenal, with each character undergoing a redemption arc and actively contributing to the main character's growth.

Noriko survived because some of the cells blasted off Godzilla attaching themselves to Noriko, you can see them appearing on Noriko’s neck in the hospital. These cells are called regenerator G1 cells introduced in a previous Godzilla movie by Toho. This is more than likely the only reason Noriko survived because of the quick regenerative properties of the G1 cells. What effect this has on Noriko from here on out is anybody’s guess. I myself learned of this in the movie “Godzilla 2000“ when I watched that one some years ago.

When we first meet Godzilla in the opening scene, he seemed to display a contempt but curious view of humans. The only time he attacked is when he felt provoked into doing so. Kind of like a corned animal defending his turf. But when Godzilla mutated and transformed into his familiar form, his contempt turned into outright misanthropic hatred. It is implied that Godzilla blames humanity for his condition and wants to punish them for it. That’s why he’s so outlandishly violent and destructive. This might be the most angry and pissed I’ve ever seen Godzilla at this point. I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way.
