Having ridden a horse that was not only ex-Grand Prix Special but used as a schoolmaster for riders wanting to learn higher-level moves I can promise ANYONE who thinks dressage looks easy that it is incredibly tough. I ran with sweat riding a horse that knew exactly what he was doing and I'm a fit, healthy 28 year old. Dressage is as tough as it gets.

Let's start with the piaffe, where the horse trots in place. "The piaffe was originally used in battle to keep the horse focused, warm, and moving, ready to move forward into battle. Additionally, it is needed to develop the levade and from that, the airs above the ground.

Not every horse knows the "tricks." They certainly aren't born knowing what the rider wants them to do. I've ridden Prix St. George level horses, as the amount of riding you have to do to get them to perform all of the movements is exhausting, and that's several levels below Grand Prix.

First book on Dressage - On Horsemanship is the English title usually given to Περὶ ἱππικῆς, peri hippikēs, one of the two treatises on horsemanship by the Athenian historian and soldier Xenophon (c. 430 - 354 BC). On horsemanship deals with the selection, care and training of horses in general. Military training and the duties of the cavalry commander are dealt with in the Hipparchicus.

Oh, silly, I understand that cavalry was much faster when there were guns. HOWEVER, when guns were far less common, control was key, as was tactics. That's what classical dressage was built on, control. Xenophon, the one that wrote that book on dressage, even goes into detail on how to select a horse for war, how to train him dressage, and then what to use in battle (Such as helmet, armor, how to hold a spear, etc.)

Bet you have NEVER tried any of this type of dressage, let alone rode a horse in a competition before. Maybe even never rode a horse? If its "laughable", why don't you go on and get onto a horse, and perform these moves yourself, then say its "laughable"?
@digglygickmcgee11 жыл бұрын
So. Having the horse controlled, focused, and collected (Horses collect themselves naturally in the wild when facing danger, as it is easier to move quickly and strongly) on the battlefield is easily the difference between life and death for the men that fought in this way. I think you need to think outside the box a bit and do some research.

For that person out there who's saying, " You just sit on a horse as they prance around" NO, you do not just sit there, if you just sit on a horse, he'll just wander over to a patch of grass and start eating. And why do you laugh at riding? Why don't you try doing a dance with a 1500 pound animal that can kill you with one misstep? And, they don't " Dress like a toff" what? Do you expect them to wear a T-shirt and short's? Just like, do you expect the marines to wear a tank top and jean's? NO, you have clearly never worked with a horse so, don't make any assumption's. Why do you question it in the Olympics? It's a sport and it has every right to be in the Olympics. Why don't you try riding yourself?

How is wrestling in the Olympics? All you do is roll on the floor punching and kicking each other. If you knew anything at all about horse-riding, you'd know that it's one of the most demanding, mentally-challenging sports in the Olympics, and has every right of being in the Olympics.
@slipknot59059 жыл бұрын
Catherine Barr ***** Both sports have their grueling demands but where is the sense in bashing dressage? Both involve incredible levels of skill, coordination etc. and equestrian sports are mixed, you've gotta respect that.

***** The British Olympic Association and the horse riding NGB helped decide which sport GB had a good chance of winning and this was included. "Rich toffs" are influential it's just the way it works. Your misdirected anger or envy seems like an underlying desire to be one.

Sorry, I couldn't tell if you were being serious or something such as being ignorant or misinformed. I do definitely agree. To a certain extent, yes. well that is just complete nonsense... if you don't know anything about dressage, then please shut up. its people like you who make the dressage scene look very bad for absolutely no reason at all. you are just one of those, who is going around and yelling out some storys they have once heard of, but never understood, or even ever witnessed. so fiy: none of the horses you have just seen in this video have been ridden with rollkur and trust me they were not harmed at all, otherwise they wouldn't be there. the bits are called curb bits. they are ruled by the fei who also regulates how "effective" they must be set up. they are pretty much the same on every horse. so no, they are not "nasty bits", if you know how to use them, you can give your aids even more gentle, than with a snaffled bit for example).
@ambermorris773210 жыл бұрын
Lady. Learn about horses before you bash. If it was hurting them they would be throwing their heads, flicking their back ends and performing poorly. But because they are perfectly fine with it and in no pain, they perform and behave perfectly.
@Shawnshawna10 жыл бұрын
I agree its hard to see the beauty of it when its clear the yanking they do. Sadly by this level they're used to it. There is pain there.
@anckothehaflinger10 жыл бұрын
WildWestHorseLover The mouth is open because the horse has a relaxed jaw and is not fighting the bit, if the horse was in any discomfort whatsoever it would not be salivating, it would be fighting that pressure by locking its jaw or visually protesting against the rider as Amber Morris points out. And don't belittle a fantastic achievement by claiming the horses just don't show signs of pain because they're used to it, dressage horses at this level have very sensitive mouths because they are trained from the start by brilliant riders who DON'T yank at their mouths. Why don't you go research rollkur properly and learn the difference between hyperflexion and collection before tossing accusations around.
@SarahK29310 жыл бұрын
I know for a fact that Valegro and Mistral Hojris were NOT trained with rollkur... Did you once see them go behind the vertical? There is no "pain". Dujardin uses classical dressage and the goal is to make the horse move and hold himself correctly with minimal stress on his body.
