Highlights of the Equestrian Individual Jumping final in which Switzerland's Steve Guerdat won Gold during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Equestrian sports featured on the Olympic programme of the Paris Games in 1900, with jumping events, and were then withdrawn until the 1912 Games in Stockholm. Since then, this sport has been on the Olympic programme with remarkable regularity.
Until 1948, only men competed in the events, as the riders had to be officers. This restriction was lifted in 1951, and, since the Helsinki Games in 1952, women have competed with men in the mixed events. They competed first in dressage, then gradually in the other equestrian events.

Have you ever even been on a horse? The rider must guide the horse, control speed and leads, decide how many strides to the fence, all while balancing their body, keeping hands separate as to not catch the horse in the mouth while asking the horse to come off the jump on the proper lead over huge jumps-if you've never done it yourself, you may not realize what sort of finesse, core, balance, experience and strength it takes. It's not like riding a bicycle, horses have a mind of their own.

I agree wrestling requires a large amount of skill, but so does equestrian. The horse does about 50% of the work. The things the rider have to do include: Judge and control speed and distance, move with the horse, lean forward in the correct way exactly the right amount at the right time, and many, many more. to do ANY this you need an amazing partnership with an animal who does not understand words. Horse riding is MUCH harder than it looks.

Yeah, like maybe ping-pong or something. Because we are athletes too, we do work just as hard eventhough I know it seems like we don't. Yes okay so the horse is jumping them BUT we have to pick spots, keep them balanced, not to mention STAY ON over 5'6 jumps. Riding IS just as hard as wrestling, we take just as much training as they do. It takes our WHOLE LIVES to get the Olympics. Plus we are the only sport where men and women compete equally on the same playing field.

@hotpocketpoison have you ever actually sat up on a horse and rode it around?constantly lifting yourself from you legs and upper body?see the horse charging towards the fence?you have to be able to hold the animal back, estimate the distance and make the decision when to go.riding is combined sport of both horse and rider and has all the elements sports like football have.Physical exertion, coordination and risk of injury.and riders don't scream REF when they fall ;)

When do you see any whipping, kicking, or jerking of the reins in here? All of what you say is normal would be considered very bad horsemanship by anybody who has any knowledge on the topic. If the Olympians or anyone else who wanted to excel in horseback wanted to be successful, yes, they would have to get into shape and do strength exercises. To stay on a horse over those jumps takes lots of strength. Equestrian is also considered as the most difficult sport in the Olympics.

All horses go through the same basic training that other horses go through. It consists of simple ground manners, then backing and getting the horse into shape. There is no training program that teaches a horse to jump higher, it's just getting the horse fit, which everyone does. How high the horse can jump is based on physical fitness and natural ability. After the horse is at it's fitness peak it's very hard to make it any better.

Lol it's funny that he says the horse is as tame as a kitten and broke. These horses are energetic and sometimes wild, not to mention you don't just "break" a horse. It's not a stick. First and foremost it's a live animal with a mind of its own. You don't just point and shoot at a jump. Come to close, the horse chips in, hangs a leg and you have a rotational fall. Leave to long and he hits his hind legs on the jump, which can also cause horrible falls.

approach a 6ft high jump when the clock is running, but not wanting to go so fast that the horse might misstep and knock the fence down. You were asking about sit-ups and push-ups, and almost all successful riders do this daily to build core strength that is needed to hold their body still over jumps. Without this you would be knocked loose over jumps (personal experience) and possibly fall off. If the horse doesn't want to jump or move, your not going to make them. They will dump you to

That's kind of a dumb point to make. That's like asking a swimmer if they could do it with no water, or a bicyclist if they could do their races with no bike. The horse is an integral part.

I hate it when people say that this isn't a sport... Yeah, controlling and risking your life on a 1,000+ lb animal and jumping them over 5+ ft obstacles isn't, yet throwing and defending a football is. Wimps.

My boarding barn is not a 'family farm.' It's a higher quality facility with a very good trainer with warmblood type horses. My horse's sire even was a Grand Prix jumper. I can still afford training. Basic and quality training is needed when you own a horse. If you cannot afford this you should not be owning a horse. If you watch the video closely you see that some riders fall forward over some jumps. This is a result of loss of balance. Strength exercises aren't the same as speed exercises,

That name ( warmblood ) that you use and 'others' use will have to fade away. As All show jumpers/dressage/event Horses that are Not Race horses, Are " SPORT " horses. These horses Compete in the SPORTS of Show Jumping, Eventing, Dressage, Polo, Long Distance Riding, Driving.

Look it up. How the heck is the horse as tame as a kitten? Many horses will buck or kick out before they start due to excess energy. Rodeos are completely different, horses buck because of a tight strap under their flank, which is a highly sensitive area. How is that harder than horse jumping/riding? The rider in a rodeo is strapped to the animal, where as the only thing holding that saddle in place is a girth under the belly in jumping. It's a mind game also, trying to decide how fast to

Also, you don't just send them to a trainer and they come back perfect. It's takes YEARS to figure out how to ride each horse and how to be successful. On no way do they do what you want just because you ask them. But there is no point in trying to explain horseback riding to someone who compares it to driving a quad. You push the button, the quad does what you want. That's not how horses work at all.

If the horse wants you dead, you could die. Why do you think it is required to use a helmet in all horse riding events, and a body protector is also needed in xcountry?
@Kpeg9

Ok. Let's be honest here... The horse is doing 90-95% of the work. I'm not going to sit here and say screw equestrian and all of that stuff, but you cannot say that equestrian is equal to wrestling in terms of difficulty. I admit i shouldnt have accused this of not being a sport, and it does require a level of skill, but wrestling requires alot more skill than equestrian (no offense) I respect your view on equestrian, I just believe that we should look at other sports before ruling out wrestling

Have you even ever seen a horse trained? Breaking in and training a horse forcefully will not make a good horse. It also makes an extremely bad trainer. I know this because I own a horse that has never been ridden and is in training right now. Training takes time, especially with horses that are nervous, like mine. You don't want to tear down trust when you need it most. I've given you reasons why riders are athletes. Difficult horses, dangers, trying to judge distances, staying upright over

So, in other words, no you have not ridden a horse. Don't diss a sport you know nothing about. If the horse was loose in the arena it wouldn't be jumping anything at all. So why do the horses jump them now? Why do they do it in the correct order, jumping the correct distances away from the jump, where as a too short distance or too long distance might end up in disaster? Only horse people can see the numerous aids that instruct the horse to slow down, speed up, and turn. Also, complete trust

Horses are not bicycles or dolls, they have emotions, just like every single living thing does. Yes, a horse's personality could be docile, but it could be hyper and spirited at times as well. Ever heard of a difficult horse to ride? They exist, most of them are probably hard to ride in the Olympics too, they usually have more talent. The rodeo rider is STRAPPED ON! Your excuses still don't verify why horse jumping isn't a sport. Why does comparing them to rodeos make them any less then a sport
