The ROTT firespouts aren't in the finished Duke 3D levels, but the sprites for them still exist in the tiles, so presumably the Tec Toy people grabbed them along with the other assets they were gonna use.
@revenantevil Жыл бұрын
You're right! It seems like the firespouts were removed shortly before release as I've found some in beta 0.99... and I guess they just left them in the data for some reason. Thanks for the comment!
@0neDoomedSpaceMarine Жыл бұрын
They did finally decide to use them in the new episode added in 20th Anniversary Edition. The port itself maybe leaves a few things to be desired, but the new levels are pretty damn good stuff, they got the original level designers back and they're no longer bound by the restraints of 1996 era software and hardware, so they go all out.

@RicardoRamosRetrocomputacao Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, everyone captures the game incorrectly. You need to use a shader that simulates a CRT so that the colors are blended, the game on a CRT TV is more beautiful, there are no vertical lines in the textures. The game sucks, but it is respected for being a great achievement. It was probably developed from what the developers found for free on BBCs. This is due to the following facts: Duke was relatively unknown here, as it was a new, modern, demanding game, and computers in Brazil always cost VERY expensive, EXAGGERATEDLY expensive (a modern computer in 1996 would cost half the value of a popular car) , in the late 90s, the average configuration of the population would be a 486dx2 with less than 4mb of ram, which is impossible to run duke 3d. I highly doubt that the tectoy guys would order an American copy to use the assets. So they must have just downloaded some demos and betas, and used what they managed to extract from the files. Personally, I think a 32x version running on the doom engine would be better, but 32x is very rare here, because it had a value outside the Brazilian reality. Fun fact: They were Brazilian, they made an exclusive game for the Brazilian market, but they did it in English too lol

If ya know how to code and shit you could actually just transfer files from another pc hard drive and use them. I made my 23 year old pc run on a new pc from a few years ago so you could just use files from another computer too have that option. To make my old pc work with my newer pc had too transfer some simple files like i had to transfer my ram files over so it would run and boot up using ddr4 ram and using a nvme ssd as the boot, and update msi and Nvidia files for those launchers. And it worked and had every file like it was on the older pc. Its runs like its new out of box. And yes i could use msi stuff but im already more invested in Nvidia.

I will have to disagree here. In late 90s we already had Pentiums 2 and AMD k6-2's at Brazilian households. Also, DN3D for the PC always was popular amongst PC users, it was officially distributed by Brasoft at lots of markets and malls throughout Brazil.
@pedromascarenas5 ай бұрын
@@danevileye K6-2 and Pentium 2 in family homes? You mean in the mansions of the rich... A mediocre 486 cost 700 reais at the end of the 90s (and that was exactly what gave rise to the term "486" to designate a bad/slow computer, people bought one because it was affordable, but they were surprised when they tried to access the internet on one), the minimum monthly salary was 130, the cheapest Pentium 2 (entry level) cost 2500 reais, a small one cost between 5 and 7 thousand (20gb HD, 128mb, accelerator card) , the closest thing we had to popular before the Positivos, were the kits with a PCChips socket 7 board, with k6-2 300, costing around 2k reais.
@danevileye5 ай бұрын
@@pedromascarenas I meant, literally the late 90s. In 1999 we upgraded our Pentium 100 for a K6-2 450 with 64 mbs for around R$ 750. I mean, it was not like PCs were cheap here back then, but it wasn't that expensive. I'd say things were bad from 1995 and back. It was around 1996 that ppl began being able to afford Pentiums (not cheap tho, just not prohibitively expensive anymore). My reference is SP, can't say for the other regions, tho.
@pedromascarenas5 ай бұрын
@@danevileye And do you think it was normal for someone to spend the price of a used car on computer parts? In 1999, only 2% of the population had access to the Internet, and computers only became accessible to Brazilians after 2002, mainly because of Windows XP Starter Edition (the Windows license made the final price of the PC expensive). You're right about the price, but it was 750 reais for the UPGRADE KIT, not the computer, and it was exactly the PCChips crap that made computer technicians rich (I guarantee you that I paid more than half of the installments for my Chevy Astra thanks to that motherboard).

At that time, I remember magazines repeatedly advertising Duke 3D for the Mega Drive and I always wondered how that would be. At home, my brothers and I had the Saturn for probably 2 years and we had played Hexen, Duke 3D and many more. Only when emulation became as widespread as it became, in the mid 10's I tried this version and here is my take: The game makes the Mega Drive look bad, I say that because the console can do so much more, even for a FPS game, there are many examples: Zero Tolerance, Toy Story (first person sections), Jurassic Park: Lost world makes it hard to believe it's a Mega Drive game, even though it doesn't have a free roaming 3D environment, and Bloodshot, this is not mentioning impressive titles such as the 3D racing Formula One from Domark (1993). And others. The thing is, Tec Toy was a good distributer, retailer and SEGA representative here in Brazil, their products, specially up to the Saturn era, had high quality (and were very expensive too). But they were never good as game developers. I commend them for bringing Phantasy Star and translating it to Portuguese, specially Riven for the Saturn, which was dubbed with professional actors. But when it comes to original software, they always were subpar, to say the least, they tried bringing even SF2 to the SMS and that is a disaster, when that console could handle a proper developed SF2 professionally, such as Fatal Fury Special and Samurai Shodown are very impressive for the Game Gear (handheld SMS), Tec Toy released Duke 3D to try and push the Mega Drive a bit more, but this is a very sad effort. There could be a very decent, even if downgraded version of Duke 3D for the system, provided it's made with the right tools, time and knowledge. Have you checked Real Bout Fatal Fury Special for the Mega Drive? It's a recent homebrew, delivering basically a 32-bit quality game for the system.

I am definitely interested in checking out the Evercade Duke games... let's see what happens! Thanks for stopping by :)

considering the limitations of the hardware and a team of only 3 guys to do everything, they did make a miracle happen.

13:00 You mentioned what the source material would be for Duke in space. Or why the spacesuit is an item in this port. I think you're overthinking it, the developers kne w this version of the game sucked and they applied the spacesuit for a Space section just to differentiate the otherwise boring level design. As you said before it's impressive for the hardware and I think that Duke in Space bit is Cool AF despite its obviously using space as a floor and ceiling texture. I would guess the space suit item was just compensating for the game being otherwise shit. I mean if they have the means to improvise a lose-lose situation you might as well take some chances

When it comes to preference on if i call the megadrive the megadrive or genesis i differently prefer calling it the megadrive hands down sounds way better and it rolls off the tungh better

I always thought this port was pretty cool, alongside the GBA game.

Those flame spouts do still exist in the game. They weren't placed into any of the original levels, but when I made some maps way back when i was way too young to be playing this game, I added them in a couple. They worked as good traps and I think you could align them to the ceiling too. But the music, ugh. Sega's systems were KNOWN for having good music. This sounds terrible. An absolute disgrace to Bobby The Prince's legacy.

If the code had included 32x and Sega CD it might have been able to look better
@revenantevil Жыл бұрын
Yeah, for sure! I'm guessing they wanted to appeal to the larger install base that the MegaDrive had. I would love to have seen a version for 32X or Mega CD! Thanks for stopping by :)

@@revenantevil yea if they combo all 3 cuz there's xtra CPU in both 32x and s cd... Might been able to pull it off But ya right in Brazil most only had the base system

Pretty impressive given the hardware, I'll pass though. It was crap on the N64, crap on the PS1 and crap in general
@bonzobanana1 Жыл бұрын
I loved Duke Nukem on N64 especially 4 player and it was great on Playstation and Saturn too. I also played the Megadrive version emulated and also had the Tapwave Zodiac version which was awful. I think there was also a version on a tiger handheld console at one point in black and white unless my brain made that up. Such a fantastic game when done on reasonable hardware.

@@revenantevil Yep! The minimum wage in Brazil (stipulated by the government) is R$1320,00 (USD 267,32) per month and a PS5 for an example costs more or less R$4000,00 (USD 810,06). It has always been like that, unfortunately 😅
