Well, there is nothing much to say about graphics. I had a Saturn way back when, and comparing games that were released on PS1 and Sega Saturn, Saturn versions were always noticeably worst looking. I think PS1 versions also ran little bit faster but I could be wrong on that one. Even though Saturn could play 3D games, there were only so much it could do.
@revenantevil Жыл бұрын
That seems a fair thing to say as a general rule. Although I haven't done too much testing. Tomb Raider is one that runs much better on PlayStation, off the top of my head. Duke certainly has a higher framerate on Saturn, but at what cost? :p Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment, means a lot! :) I've done a video on the PlayStation version if you fancy it! Cheers :)

Although it lacks a lot of the props, the levels are often cut down, and there are some odd things/limitations due to the engine change... I'll have to say that Duke Nukem on the Saturn probably plays the best of all three main line ports. At least when you're playing on the original hardware. Duke Nukem on the playstation has such an up and down uncapped framerate that it gets really nasty in some of the bigger maps, and it can get you killed. Plus it has a really rough control sceheme involving button combos for using items and such. Saturn gets around this by putting the inventory int he pause screen, which to some may not be ideal, but it increases the playability factor by a lot. The N64 version completely lacks music, and although some of the changes are fun, the overall tone of the game has shifted away from the gritty dark pseudo noir post apocalyptic vibe from films like Terminator and Escape From New York, and been turned more towards... Last Action Hero? I guess? Not better or worse, per se, but certainly more colorful and bright. The Saturn version, simply put, is the most playable. The pacing of the game is closer to Duke on PC than the other two ports, even though the Playstation version is technically more authentic to the PC origiinal. I'd also have to say I don't think that last point is exactly fair. Yes, it uses the same engine as Powerslave, but that's like saying Half-Life and Quake are the same game because they both run on a version of the Quake engine. All of the gameplay code had to be changed for Duke 3D.
@revenantevil Жыл бұрын
You're probably right about my last point not being entirely fair. But playing the game - it sometimes feels more like Exhumed than Duke - at least it does to me. I do like the inventory being on the pause menu, it's a good solution. I really like what you said about the N64 version being a bit more like Last Action Hero. I totally agree. The lack of music really is unforgivable. I have to disagree about the Saturn version being the best, but it's still a great experience. I enjoyed every minute. :) Thanks for taking the time to write such an epic comment, and thanks for stopping by. :)
@ALittleSnowFairySaga Жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree with this. I too, feel that it is the most playable of the three ports on original hardware. It’s the best to me, N64 comes a close second, and PS1 was a distant 3rd.
@RetroDeathReviews666 Жыл бұрын
Finally got a saturn a few weeks ago after years of wanting one, and the first 3 games I got were the Lobotomy Trilogy (Powerslave, Duke 3D, Quake), and I beat them all in about a week or two. Good timing for this video to show up :P Also regardless of its issues, this is my favorite version of Duke 3D outside of the DOS original. Also the thing with the levels is not true, you're comparing the 40ish levels to the atomic edition of Duke 3D. All the console ports had the original game's 3 episodes *without* the 4th one. Saturn Duke only cut the secret levels aside from Launch Facility.
@OpenMawProductions Жыл бұрын
Granted, but the Saturn version of Duke was the latest one to the party, and by the time it came out Atomic Edition was out. And compared to Playstation (which had an entire new episode) and the N64 version (which had original Dukematch levels, and included Duke Burger and Area 51), the Saturn does come up the shortest and leanest in terms of level content. Plus Saturn is the only version to have the levels themselves truncated and scaled down.

I know it was probably outside of the remit, which was to port Duke Nukem 3D as accurately as possible, but given how N64 Duke was upgraded in a lot of ways, I almost wish Saturn Duke had really taken advantage of being 'Exhumed with a Duke skin', and maybe opened up the game world with traversing backwards and forwards across levels, special items or switches in later levels that open areas in the previous ones, etc etc.
@roberto15193 ай бұрын
Being the first version of Duke 3D we played at home, I have fond memories of this one, still, I don't think you were harsh about this version, we just have many better options today, it does affect how we compare things. The game does have the sway camera option enabled and it just can't be disabled, the PC version allows for you to turn this off, I also think they should have made Duke (camera) to be higher, as the character seems to be small in this version, almost like child Duke. It's possible the three (5th gen) versions of Duke 3D are respectable in their own ways and interesting. I think the 6th gen, and specially from the 7th gen onwards, games were basically carbon copies of one another, but you could take the original Duke 3D and put side by side with the console versions, there will be interesting things to talk about. Even if the first version we had played at home was the Total Meltdown for the PS1, we would had enjoyed it, but we didn't have the console at that time. I think we just enjoyed many things without much effort at that time.

Great video! - I've only played a tiny bit of this port. I respect it. You mentioned it's like they built Duke 3D on top of Powerslave, though my mind thinks of it like Duke 3D built on Quake. Powerslave seems very Quake-y (heh, they made that port too, yep). - I think my biggest hangup about the game is that Duke seems to be too small for the environment. For example, at 3:58, I imagine the Duke would need to reach up in order to get his hands in the sinks. It's interesting considering they had to reduce the virtual space volume of most of the architecture, but the scale ends up being too big for poor widdle Duke.

Great vid! the only thing id say you should maybe change is the music bit. Yes it does sound a bit better on the saturn, however unlike the console versions you can connect a synthisizer or sound card to your pc to make the music sound amazing. Technical I know but I feel to this day it should be talked about, you can make the OST sound like an orchestra is playing it with the right hardware or even software.
@revenantevil Жыл бұрын
I've had people mention this a few times now and I totally understand. I'll try and improve my comparisons, but I'm not really sure how to show that aspect of the music properly just yet. I'm thinking about looking into how the OG version handles music and making a dedicated video about it. I may have to pick up some hardware to do that, so it'll have to wait for a bit unfortunately. But it's definitely interesting (to me anyways), and it would be nice to understand it all a bit better. For now, I'm just taking the music from the Atomic Edition as it plays on my (much better than a 90s) PC. Which may be flawed, but I imagine it's how most people are hearing the game nowadays. I've got a lot to learn though. I'm still new to all this! I promise I'll get better though, you have my word! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Means a lot. Cheers!

With a good wavetable card, you can get very similar music to the Saturn port's CD tracks, but on the DOS version. I've got a Soundblaster Live! card and it sounds pretty good, but not quite as good as the Saturn. A Roland SC-88 can get pretty darn close, though.
@revenantevil Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the information! I've had a few complaints about how I've handled the music in some of these vids, so I've been trying to learn about Duke 3D's audio and why it sounds so different depending on your setup. I may have to (eventually) pick up some old hardware and run some tests for myself. I'm curious though, what's your favourite way to play Duke? Surely you don't have a sound card set up in a modern PC? Lol Thanks for the comments 🙂
@xanshark Жыл бұрын
@@revenantevil The way I first played Duke3D was through the 20th Edition World Tour on Steam, later on I got ahold of a Dell OEM computer from about 2002 or so with a Pentium 4, and downgraded the OS to Windows 98. I put in a Sound Blaster Live! CT4780 which provides very nice MIDI, Sound Blaster compatibility (through emulation), and EAX sound for Windows games. I now play Duke3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood, etc. using that computer and pure DOS. It took a lot of trial and error to get to where it is now, but it's pretty good at DOS titles from about 1993 and onward, and Windows titles from about 1995-2000. All that computer lacks is a proper video card, all I have at the moment is onboard video by Intel that's pretty slow on Windows titles like Unreal, Quake 3, etc. Also, a CRT is very nice to have, I got one free off of someone I know and while it takes up a bit of space, I think it looks much nicer than LCD's do.

I didn't get the impression that you were bashing Saturn Duke throughout the video, it's not like the criticism was unfair. They had to make a lot of cuts, and what's there is a bit off, but overall it wasn't a terrible way to play Duke3D if you only had a Saturn. It's crazy that Lobotomy managed to recreate the whole game (the first 3 episodes that is) in a completely different engine in such a short time.
