Considering that the original Duke Nukem 3D needed at least a 486 DX to get a playable framerate, it's really impressive that they managed to do this using the original Build engine on the PlayStation.

The music in this version is boss. I especially like how when you're in a bar or a nightclub scene, the bar music seamlessly fades into foreground and the level music fades into background, but both stay in complete timing with each other - really technically impressive stuff. (In the PC game the bar music was basically just an ambient sound effect file).

Man, Total Meltdown (or just Duke Nukem as it was from my place) was my introduction to Duke. I had fond memories of the game, however going back later on the port is almost unplayable with the hardcore framedrops and (even for the time) backwards controls. I actually really like Plug N Pray but Nightmare Zone was and always will be my least favourite official Duke 3D level, especially when played on the original hardware. As for the music, shit is badass, I prefer it over the original (although I do prefer some tracks from the PC like Future Military Conquests). Great video chief, looking forward to more.

Thanks for stopping by man! I have fond memories of TM too. I don't think it's too bad, all things considered. Nightmare Zone sucks though, haha. Worse than Faces of Death. Agreed that the music is excellent. It never gets old to me, haha. Thanks again for the comment!

Minstery of Fear is a reference to a very popular nightclub in the UK Minstery of Sound. As the map name suggests, you fight in a nightclub. Another fun fact is that the PlayStation console was going to be cameoed, Sony however disallowed games that features 3D models of the console during gameplay thus got replaced with the 'Removed of Legal Reasons'' texture instead in the final version.

I thought you'd mention how unique this version is since it provides an almost like PC options menu, such as shadows, frame sync and filtering, these are quite unique for the era and the console. It could also have been tested to see if any of these would improve, even for a tiny bit, the performance of the game. On another video, I mentioned my brother and I were introduced to Duke 3D on the Saturn, but the PS1 version, while not perfect, I commend it for trying to be as faithful as possible and adding extra content, I played this one a few years ago and enjoyed it, even if it's flawed in some aspects.

While the PSone has an amazing soundtrack, almost outclassing Lee Jackson's soundtrack, no favoritism here, and an extra episode which was fine and being faithful to the PC version, it UNFORTUNALEY, it suffers from Huge Frame Rate Issues and having very bizarre control scheme, I feel like that the PSone version is the worst, with the N64 being the best at the time, great video bro you deserve a sub

This last one is very strange because we’re just now able to get them without dealing with scalpers so the price is the same as launch day. From what I can gather, Sony had a thing where multiplatform games needed to have some sort of difference to make the PlayStation version of games different to versions on say, the Saturn (EG, level and sprite differences, such as changing the red enemies in Power Slave to blue ones). So that's my hypothesis on why the movie posters in the Hollywood Holocaust theatre are different.

The thing here isn't the level complexity. It's the fact that they ported BUILD 1 to 1. Saturn Duke used Slavedriver, an engine built from the ground up for the Saturn hardware. That's the big difference. This is the same thing that happened to Saturn Doom. Relying on the CPU to handle the brunt of the work with an engine as complicated as BUILD was never going to deliver the right kind of performance. The game could have matched PS1 Doom for performance with some development time for a new engine.

He was looking for help getting it to work, and I just so happen to like this port the most of the classic console ones, so I jumped right in. It was basically a few weeks of absolute fun researching and digging into it with a third friend doing the technical legwork on getting it working, etc. while I noticed differences and all. Probably one of the few redeeming and positive times in the prototype scene. Gates Motel is broken/unfinished in the prototype. It's possible a switch in the basement area was supposed to unlock the next area, but wasn't tagged properly. And then they likely coded it wrong to "fix" it in the final by adding that functionality to something else, that results in a huge part of that map being optional.

That's amazing. How long have you been into preserving games? Do you know of any more Duke prototypes out there? Man, I'm envious you got to explore this first! I can't imagine finding something like this on ebay. They must have been charging a small fortune. I was a bit gutted when I couldn't grab footage for the later levels, but it makes sense with the broken trigger. Wish I'd have reached out to you while making the video! Sounds like a fascinating story all in itself. I wonder how the seller got their hands on it... Thanks for sharing :)

First time I beat Duke 3D was on the Ps1. Bit rough, every subsequent time has been on PC and it almost feels like easy mode by comparison.

Something a lot of people don't seem to bring up is that running Total Meltdown on a PS2 actually does improve the performance quite considerably. Sadly, Nobody has recorded proper footage of it. I only came to learn this after testing out the ROM (in a glitchy emulated state) on PCSX2: The graphics were all fucked and there was no music but the framerate was a lot smoother. Someone in Duke4 would later confirm TM does indeed run better on a PS2 with the actual hardware.

The Nintendo 64 version is my favorite and I think better than the original's gameplay because of it's weapons, they're overall more useful but less unique than the PC version.

Yes, my favourite Duke Nukem 3D is the N64 version. It's the only version where you can actually save the babes (why wasn't this in all the versions. Duke is supposed to be a hero, and heros saves people), it has split-screen four player deathmatch (including being able to play against (stupid) c and two player co-op mods, some great new weapons, some new graphical effects, and some level improvements. On the minus side, it has some censorship (which never bothered me), doesn't include some of the PC version's levels, no in-game music, and lacks some of the effects of the other versions (such as mirrors, and a starry background in space). I wish Blood (the other superb Build engine game of the time) had also been ported to consoles. That game was also so good.

@@ConkerTS I wish there was a mod for Eduke32 or Raze that carried the weapons from Duke64 to 3D but all the ones out there are imperfect recreations and not copy and pasted from the Duke64 Rom. I play Duke64 on PC with a port called Rednukem that uses an actual Duke Nukem 64 rom to play and it's the best way to play the game imo... Also adds the music if you want.

damn that guy probably just ruined the Duke Nukem 3D cover art for me. I never noticed that "Trooper" head in the middle at the bottom. Maybe because it's obscured by the title. *edit nevermind- it isn't actually visible in any other editions

The original soundtrack is meant to be played on a SC-88 (it also sounds good on some other devices too, like the SC-55), but it sounds REALLY bad on the Microsoft MIDI player. Sure, the PS remixes will sound better whatever your hardware is, but you should absolutely use a Soundfont to not make it sounds like shit like in your exemple

@@revenantevil On hardware MIDI devices, the drums are sampled from real drums and the overall quality of instruments is miles ahead. Also, it has processing effects like reverb, echo and such. Take a listen to the OST on a SC-88 (it was partially composed with this machine) here : watch?v=IDvEEWeGyQU On a side note, the PS1 soundtrack departs too much from the original. It's undeniable that some tracks are really good, but overall it takes too much freedom and ruined some masterpiece like Dark Side soundtrack, which is supposed to be a slow paced melodic track. Also, on PC, each level has its own track and thus contributing to the ambience uniqueness. This is not the case on the PS1 due to limitation of disk space

I just finished playing Plug and Prey using the TC mod for PC. Despite using the mouse and keyboard. I died so many times. The map design is terrible. The levels are petty, it punishes you for everything you do. Play it safe, it find a way to kill you. Rush in, you die. Honestly I dont know how I manage to beat the PS1 version as a kid.
