It was somewhat common for shareware games to advertise "cheat codes" as something you'd get when buying the full version.

Interesting, I was probably a little young to remember this level of detail at the time, but it certainly makes sense!

I have such great memories of both of these games, played them alot as a kid. I remember being blown away at the improvement in graphics and sound in the sequel. Great comparison! Earned my subscription!

Cheers for the kind words! I too have great memories mainly of the sequel, I think the wow factor just stuck with me a lot more.

I love them both but have more of a soft spot for the original. My family got our first PC when dad went back to college in spring of 92, and he became friends with some students who were heavily involved in distributing shareware so Duke Nukem I episode 1 was among my first PC games and one of them gave me the full version for my birthday later that year. (They always gave me full versions of Shareware games they knew I liked for my birthday and Christmas until the shareware scene died out but which friend gave me what games blurs in my memory)

At least Shareware took the guessing out of gift giving! Nostalgia is a powerful thing, so if you have good memories of the original I can certainly understand that!

Great video. Looking forward to seeing the new remastered versions coming out next month with wide screen, smooth scrolling and improved sound

Great video. Played the heck outta both games as a child. I remember not figuring out how to get those pesky spiders off you for the longest time... Even though I think it was explained in the instructions. The help screen in DN2 had some cool tips too. There's one about knowing which boxes have a bomb, but it hints you to figure it out for yourself.

Cheers for the kind words! Oh my gosh those spiders… I tried for so long to work out how to get them off you before looking up a gamefaq which covered it.

It's always crazy to think Duke started as a Commander keen clone.

What improved the graphics on Duke Numem 2 was it was taking advantage of 256 color VGA graphics while the original used 16 color EGA.

I agree, they're fun games, and i appreciate how they had smooth controls despite the low framerate. Kinda wish i could play the sequel with the 2013 PC and iOS re-release though since they actually made it so Duke had his iconic sunglasses, but sadly, that version is no longer available due to gearbox having the rights to the Duke Nukem IP. And whilst i did get a hold of the iOS Duke 2, there's no way i can play it.

You actually can't save anywhere in Duke 2. It appears as if you can, but when you load the save, it always puts you at the beginning of the level.

Great video but man it is SO frustrating watching you blow open TNT boxes in Duke1 and then just stand there and take damage *every* *single* *time*. My kid sister played better than this back in 1993 :D

I think a part of me just kept hoping they were filled with something except an explosion 💥… But hey, I said I’d do a comparison I never proclaimed to be particularly good at either 😄

When the first Duke game was released in 1991, Apogee was concerned over copyright issues because there was another character named Duke Nukem in the Captain Planet cartoon When Apogee discovered that the name was not copyrighted by the producers of that cartoon, they rushed to copyright it themselves
