Usually the guys that never made it to the very top are much more grounded and realistic about the business, how it worked and what there place was, whether they liked it or not. There are a few marks for themselves like The Radicalz etc who could never accept that the middle of a good card was more than enough for them, but mostly guys like Droese, Al Snow have a great grasp of it and were not such a high profile that they had to avoid all the weird stuff that went on (like an Austin or Hogan would have to), but obviously did well enough to be there in a top company and know how it all works.

Shawn Michaels would never have made it as a pro wrestler in the 60's and 70's working in Mid-South and Florida. Losing bar fights meant instant unemployment.
