I grew up watching Duke job constantly. I loved him for what he did and I still remember him to this day. I work as a cook in a shitty restaurant making minimum wage, no one will remember me. This dude got to be on TV wrestling against and putting over guys who would eventually become legends. He has nothing to be ashamed of, and I admire and still remember all the great jobbers in WWE history. He is one of them.

These Duke shoots are awesome Hannibal. I met him in 94 around back at the mid Hudson civic center in Poughkeepsie NY, I believe it was 1994. He was the nicest wrestler there for sure. I met Shawn Michaels that night too, LOL, that was interesting. Shawn got his bag stuck in the door and instead of simply moving the bag away for the door, he pulled as hard as he could slamming the door behind him. He was definitely hung over on something. He did say hello to me though.

Vince sees Bret as something profitable, so that's why he is pretty high on the totem pole at the time. While Duke on the other hand, Vince doesn't really have much impression towards him. The advice was sound: Stand up for yourself and have a plan/vision of how to get to where you want to be. Bret Hart had a brilliant career doing just that so it was sincere advice. Sounds like the problem was in the execution. Dumpster admits to being "out there" so who knows how he was sounding? Gary McKenna exactly what I was thinking. Just heard Jericho on his podcast (and others in the past) talk about going to Vince and standing up for themselves. Granted it’s much easier for Jericho to go than the dumpster!! But they also say it’s the way you do it... don’t just go to Vince and say you won’t do it... go to him and offer something better! As to Bret.... well the first time it worked out so the advice was good... the other times... well the advice sounded good then too but dumpster (by his own admission) was too blitzed out of his head to know what he was doing! WWF projected you well and i felt you were the next big thing. But the matches you had against Lawler and a few others were so lacklustre. Disapointed then and now after hearing this interview. The problem with Duke is that he has/had no initiative and, to be frank, was too stupid to use the advice given to him effectively. It's not Bret or anyone else's job to lay out every single detail of what someone should do in a situation like Duke's. Bret wasn't wrong in the advice he gave. Duke should have not only simply done what was suggested but also provide compelling reasons for WHY his decisions to refuse to job were valid. When speaking with Vince, he should have offered at least two well thought out pitches for his character to go in so that Vince could have at least entertained the idea of pushing Duke's character in a different direction. Quite frankly, Duke, and many other of the talent past and present don't quite grasp what pro wrestling is. It's a business. Can you put butts in the seats? In other words, can you draw? That's what is important. It's not about "winning" or "losing". The "winner" of a match can't exist without someone who will "lose". Everyone plays an important role. Duke didn't and still doesn't understand that. Duke was upset that he wasn't being used on TV much at one point. Well, instead of looking at others, he should have been looking at himself, his gimmick, his character, and what the problem was. He should have realized that he wasn't drawing. That's the only reason he wouldn't be used. If you can draw, you better believe the promoter will want to use you as much as possible because that makes MONEY. But here's the thing: If Duke was smart enough to understand the pro wrestling business, he wouldn't have had a problem, he would have been a draw and would have been on TV a lot more. He wouldn't have ever had to gone to another person like Bret for advice. It also doesn't help that he was not quite with it often due to the painkillers he was using frequently at the time. So it's not the fault of Bret or anyone else for Duke's problems. It's Duke's fault.

Since Dumpster was blitzed out of his mind (by own repeated admission) , I’m sure he didn’t execute it well - but the advice wasn’t bad. Maybe Bret WAS messing with him, but here's another possibility: Bret was in a far, far better position then him when it came to clout in WWF. From Bret's POV, that's what HE would have done. Maybe he couldn't conceive things from Duke Droese's POV as, essentially, a jobber. Bret was probably going by what he would do, not recognizing that Droese was in a far lower bargaining position. How was Duke supposed to know that wasn’t how things worked. For all Drose knew, Bret elevated himself by putting his foot down. My point is, for years Ive heard Bret pat himself on the back and say that he was the leader backstage who helped all the young guys while the kliq were the ones who played games with peoples’ careers. Every wrestler, even the kliq guys, have said that Undertaker was the backstage leader, and there’s stories from Duke to Sid to Vader to Bundy to Del Wilkes to Rougeau that say that Bret was often difficult to work with and that he wasn’t the beloved guy backstage that he always proclaims. Bret is a unique guy. He’s one of the few people that is quick to pat himself on the back. Flair is really the only other guy I can think of who does it on a regular basis. People that are good usually don’t have to constantly announce it, because others will do it for them. Ive never once heard HBK, Undertaker, Savage, or Steamboat brag that they were the greatest. Constantly bragging on oneself typically rubs people the wrong way, but Bret’s fans are an odd bunch. They eat everything he says up with a golden spoon. They think everything he says is the gospel truth and they hang on to everything he does as if he was a god. Ive met very, very few objective Bret Hart fans.

You just know that some folks are going to use this for the Montreal debate, that is still going on, no matter how Bret, Shawn, Vince etc. might want to put it behind them. "Bret told him to refuse the job? There you are, that proves he's a selfish mark who bought on the Montreal screwjob himself". Actually I think I've only seen one of Duke's matches, the IYH 6(Feb. '96) match with Hunter, the one Duke was talking about I think, which he lost and as far as I know, wasn't on WWF PPV again. All I really remember is Duke doing a good-looking spinebuster on Hunter and even using his "trash-compactor" finishing move. Maybe that was a compromise of sorts, Hunter beat him, but he had Hunter beat at one point. But it didn't exactly make me think "Oh man, they should've kept this guy on PPV". Actually the whole gimmick seems like a jobber gimmick, I mean someone has to dispose of trash, but if you come into wrestling as an ex-trashman, you could probably only go as far as jobbing on PPV. I remember reading of Bob Holly not wanting to keep wrestling as Thurman "Sparky" Plugg, keeping the racing gimmick, but becoming Bob "Spark Plug" Holly. And of course Steve Austin, wanting to replace the jobber-bound gimmick The Ringmaster with something else. Oh and also Mick Foley in his first book, talks about "Mason the Mutilator" a gimmick he knew was going to fail, so he came up with "Mankind the Mutilator" instead, which for some reason ended up shortened to Mankind, before actually beginning, appearing more mysterious, less gimmicky. Still I remember Matt Borne saying that he was determined to make something out of the "Doink the Clown" gimmick when Vince gave it to him. He even said that Vince invited him to come up with a better gimmick if he could, but apparently Matt liked the Doink the evil clown idea and believed in it, even when other wrestlers said that it was stupid. Doink of course did alright(for a clown) in WWF, beating Crush at WrestleMania and wrestling Bret Hart at Summerslam(though he wasn't billed as Bret's opponent). I honestly don't know how far a clown wrestler with a name like "Doink" could go though. Any wrestler has to be concerned when they take on a jobber role or a gimmick that is more than likely going to end up a jobber gimmick, like if you change your name and gimmick are people still going to say "Hey I recognize him, he's that jobber!".

Seems to me Bret had dukes best interest at heart, and trying to get him to give HIMSELF his push. I liked Duke back in the day he worked well and as far as I know never injured no one and was professional when it came to jobbing for someone. But there’s only so many times that you can do that. But saying that I didn’t once hear him knock Bret he just says Bret gave him advice and he took it

although it's funny to think that the hitman was ribbing him Bret might have been giving him some good advice. It worked the first time and if Bruce Prichard got worried that he was mad, then that meant that he was being taken advantage of. Duke should have asserted himself in the conversation about the HHH match. Droese's gimmick killed him because he was seen as just a trash man... but had he survived in the wwf just a few more months then he could have cut an angle as a blue collar worker turned rebel alongside Stone Cold Steve Austin. another trash man turned into a crazy Rock Star ... Seems like a nice guy, the crowd liked him but his ring and mic work were generic as hell. He just wasn't going to get a top spot no matter what. However, if he had been able to stick with it for a few more years, he could have had his heel run and made a nice pay day.
