I think you need to also understand Arthur it’s more of a woodsman than a classy outlaw. Dutch kind of puts on the front, but in reality they’re all just living in tents in the woods. So Arthur’s stature, fashion, and hygiene all stem more from canonically being on the road/trail for weeks and weeks and less townhopping
@dukemeiser196 ай бұрын

@datguy84606 ай бұрын
ironically I think hes less knowledgeable about being an outdoorsman than the average person was back then. first off hes a thief, so he can just buy or steal his food when he wanted to. he also isn't as well versed in outdoorsing as we think if he needs to be told that fish and berries attracts bears and hunts rabbits with shotguns. nor could he shoot a bow (which tbf prob wasnt common either), essentially is worse at fishing than everyone else he fishes with, and just isnt generally focused on hunting and outdoorsing when theres already people around him that do that. I think his work ethic is more in line of a blue collar worker who would just buy food and only hunt when necessary than somone who actively goes out in the wilderness all day (hes already drained from being enforcer in every criminal activity, hes not gonna spend the other half of his day walking in the woods)
@themadtitan76036 ай бұрын
@@datguy8460 I think that's an interesting take with a lot of truth to it. The hunting mechanics give off the wrong idea about Arthur's prowess as a hunter. While we're given the ability to use different baits and craft various ointments, in-universe, I imagine he isn't well-versed in these areas unlike maybe a Hosea. Who hands him a crafted tonic early on & and tells him it's better than "that stuff he gets from the stores", to paraphrase and guides him in the bear hunting mission where he makes a snide remark on Arthur's style of just shooting rabbits with a shotgun. He probably only knows as much as he does because of the gang's lifestyle based on Dutch's affinity and life philosophy of living a free life in the wilderness and fighting for a savage utopia. Which might've naturally led to his bulkier build as well since he goes out for resources and does chores like wood chopping to maintain camp. Otherwise, he might've just stuck to town hopping and been thinner (as Mary says he was) like other outlaws of the time if Dutch hadn't took him under his wing.

@@themadtitan7603 yeah the whole trapper thing and hunting mechanics got people thinking arthur is an unkempt mountain man with a half foot long beard lmao. he's just a hard worker is all
@themadtitan76036 ай бұрын
@@datguy8460 Yeah, while I occasionally sport him such a look when I'm out for days outside of towns or camp grinding hunting challenges/quests, I'm generally not very partial to Arthur looking some homeless 1800s hippie with a big, unkempt beard and wearing animal hats and trinkets. I prefer him looking like a simple blue-collar working man with outlaw-y coats, vests, boots. Which is one reason I'm disappointed the more stereotypically western outfits were sort of lacking compared to the first game and the focus seemed more on the crafted hunting garments/sets that make Arthur look ridiculous walking around towns and even at camp.

You've got to remember, the average life expectancy wasn't because people only ever lived to 50, it's because infant/child mortality was insanely high. People over 50 would not have been a rarity, if you made it past childhood you had a good chance of making it into your 70's or older, just like today.

There is some inaccuracy in Arthur's "gunslinger outfits." Like his hat being made from leather which would be uncommon due to leather being a material that conducts heat and hats were usually made from cotton or some other fabric that wouldn't conduct as much heat since most working class people worked in the sun and didn't want to get hot. And his shirt being a full button down style would have been seen mostly in Europe, most shirts in 1890s America were half button down/pullovers style, aside from that Arthur's clothing is pretty accurate

A note on Arthur's formal outfits: When Arthur wears a tuxedo it would actually be almost a faux pas, because the tuxedo was considered a semi-fornal suit at the time (the name tuxedo didn't come into use until the 1900s). The socially expected outfit for a formal evening dinner/ball/party - especially one hosted by a prominent figure - would be black shoes with spats, black trousers, a white shirt with starched cuffs and bib, a low-cut waistcoat, a high starched collar (separate to the shirt, as it would be buttoned on), a white bowtie, and a tophat. also gonna add some radical facts to the clothes section, going over each of the 3 main gunslinger outfits (also Ik some nerd is gonna ask, yes the closed coat variant of the winter gunslinger worn during chapter 1 is counted as part of the winter gunslinger) Starting with just the Gunslinger-Many people at the time would've considered an outfit like this to be made for harsher weather, such as rain or light snow. Jackets were considered often to be a luxury to the middle and low class. Even a thin and beaten up one like Arthur's could've sold for anywhere from 60 to 130ish dollars in today's money. Using this we can assume Arthur's coat is either a hand me down from his father or a gift from a gang member, as Arthur is not the kind of guy to spend 100 dollars on a clothing item. It's also the buggiest outfit in the game, with many instances players have with the blue undershirt and sometimes even Arthur's arms clipping through during cutscenes and the gameplay following them. The summer gunslinger is pretty well talked about, but I will add that neckerchiefs were fairly expensive at the time, and seen usually as a more high class purchase, and any person of Arthur's middle-class of living would only be able to purchase 1, hence why Arthur doubles his as a bandana. As for the Winter Gunslinger, although very accurate, especially so in the chapter 1 closed variant, the coat Arthur uses would actually be fairly expensive, having fur on the inside would be seen as a luxury on it's own, but in contrast, expensive winter coats at the time were furry outside as well, whereas Arthur's is a cloth instead of a fur. Meaning whoever made the coat must've been really confused on his target audience.

I would say that your breakdown of Arthur Morgan, when comparing with historical accuracy of that time-period, is pretty spot on, given my own research of how times were back then and what life was like. There is one area that I will disagree on, and that is Arthur's size. You say he is supposed to be 180lbs, but from my estimation, based on his wider build, I would say he is probably more around 230lbs - 250lbs, especially if you get him up to weight level 6.5 - 7.5, which to be honest I wish they'd actually given us pounds when showing Arthur's weight in the general stats area, instead of what they did. If you want another character to review, and I do not know if you've already covered him as I am new to your channel, but I would reccomend John Marston, seeing as you cover Arthur Morgan here, covering john next seems very appropriate.

to put it short, Arthur Morgan is a character and the main playable protagonist of the video game Red Dead Redemption 2. A high-ranking member of the Van der Linde gang, Arthur must deal with the decline of the Wild West while attempting to survive against government forces and other adversaries in a fictionalized representation of the American frontier. He is portrayed by Roger Clark through performance capture. Rockstar Games decided to focus Red Dead Redemption 2 on one character, in order to follow him more personally. They felt this was more appropriate for the narrative structure of a Western. Clark wanted to play Arthur in a manner that was complex enough for the player to choose any path and still have the character make sense. He took inspiration from actors such as Toshiro Mifune, John Wayne, and Rob Wiethoff, who played John Marston in the game and its predecessor. Arthur has received acclaim from critics, with his complexity and path to redemption most frequently the subject of praise. Reviewers also lauded him for bringing the world and other characters to life, and ranked him among the most iconic video game characters. For his work, Clark accrued numerous nominations and was awarded Best Performance at the Game Awards.

One big thing that people should keep in mind is that Arthur, and by extension the game and its world as a whole, are more inspired by westerns then the true 'wild west' of 1899. So a lot of it is a glamorized, and obviously unrealistic for the sake of good ol' fashioned fun. Because it's Rockstar it feels more like a GTA in the wild west than it does a classic western: the action is WAY over the top, Arthur kills more people than the populations of certain towns, and just the sheer amount of what he does and explores in the span of a year is enough for the lifetimes of at least 2 men. the one other thing I'll add is Arthur's height of 6'1. Being an outlier makes sense; part of the reason that Dutch uses him as the muscle of the group is because of his large stature and brooding nature. The giant horse that Hosea gives you at the beginning of the game is supposed to be a reflection of that, but since horses are living creatures in RDR, anyone can be tamed and ridden, they decided to make it optional rather than mandatory that you keep/use it.

@@jonicthehedgehog9379 hm, fair point, I would contend that they've known and raised/taught Arthur since he was a child, while Charles is a relatively recent addition to the group. Also Charles seems the type to be more hesitant to just rob and kill people for no reason, and I believe he's less inclined to use guns, maybe not as skilled or experienced. I'm not saying Arthur's stature is solely why he's the breadwinner or "Bodygaurd" of the group (technically Javier, Bill, Lenny, John etc. are supposed to be pulling their weight to but alas), but I think that was just a factor in why the character's designers made the choice to make him as tall as they did

Arthur is not 6'1". It should be noted that Benjamin Byron Davis, Dutch's voice actor, claims that Dutch is 6'0". And if you watch the cutscenes, it's clear that Dutch is a little taller than Arthur, making him around 5'10" - 5'11". So you are about as tall as Arthur.

As said by Dutch's character in a interview, is R* canon that Dutch is 6'0, Javier 5'8 and Arthur in between, averaging 5,10 and not the 6'1 many talk about based in no reliable source I've seen; even different fan wikie pages can't agree if he's 6'2, 6'1 or 5'11. But I'll take it like as more of a reliable source the words of the man acting as Dutch van der Linde over speculation till R* ret-con it and really states Arthur's height at 6'1 and 6'2 once and for all; or not.
@ChromeKnives2 ай бұрын
may i mention the inaccuracy of the vanderlinde gang is because their goal before it started falling apart was justice for the people, so having a familial structure where women are heard would be in the idea of “we will prevail and secure a good future”, no matter how rare it was back then, certainly helped dutch gain people’s trust by being a golden tongue to everyone, arthur latched onto this idea and i’m willing to bet most of the gang also did

Arthur is not 6’1 and the source is wrong He’s not that taller than other characters in the cutscenes (since everyone are the same same height regardless bc of the models) Dutch is 6’0 according to his voice actor Arthur seems to be at least 2 inches shorter (or more) than Dutch That sets Arthur at around a maximum of 5’10 Javier is confirmed to be 5’8 and looking at them in rdr2 The listing makes sense Average American was 5’7 back then, and Arthur wouldn’t tower over the average dude in anyway His weight also depends on the player But my estimate is he’d be around 190-200 since he’s on the stockier side

@@dukemeiser19 In fact that's not true. People of the 1950's in average were ways smaller than latter century borns or XXIst century off springs. Just consult any Statistics Bureau no matter if in the US, countries in Europe and Asia. One good example is why, being the same original people, North Koreans and South Koreans are so different in heights, being the South ones much taller and this just after the War that started in the 1050's. SK people have food, nutrients and healthcare and genetically they evolved and become taller (a trend that averages since the beginning of times, as a Medieval european - 1200/1400's - height would not surpass 1,50m or 4,11 feet), as North Koreans lack the nutrients to keep their bodies developing, skeleton included ofc, as in a kind of darwinistic "natural selection" or similar evolutionist theories that showed up to be quite correct in these genetic aspects so far. I'm comparing two original same biological kinship people; this kind of measurement is inaccurate when applied to say south Europeans and Northern ones, just like South and North Americans. But we do know for sure we got taller since the first civilizations to nowadays in about 50 to 70 cms average. A very simply way to notice it is to compare, again in average, the height of a grandson and a grandfather with the father in between. The normal path is to get taller in every newer generation.

People saying that 180 is too light forgetting individual differences. Not all tissue has the same density and for someone the size of Arthur it’s plausible that his build could be around 180-185. Course there’s some variation with how much you feed him but for his average size, I.e. not underweight or overweight I could see 180 being accurate, especially considering we don’t ever really see his legs and they likely wouldn’t be too big considering the activities he does.

I was reading somewhere recently about tuberculosis and how in real life it's nowhere near as lethal as it seems to be in the game. Doc Holliday was diagnosed with it in his early twenties and died at 36 years old, for example. Also many people either didn't even get properly sick or recovered naturally (antibiotics hadn't been invented yet) and then just lived normally. Realistically Arthur could have survived for many years with TB, but his dying so quickly could be plausible because of the the physical traumas he goes through after getting infected-camping in a swamp for extended periods, being tortured, surviving a tram crash, surviving a boat crash, starvation, sleeping on a pile of rocks in a jungle, being tortured again, constant gun and knife injuries, extreme psychological stress, being bashed by a coward. Even so, dying of tuberculosis within only a few months of being infected is very unusual and Arthur most probably died of the physical injuries he suffers just before, with the TB only having weakened him to the point that he was unable to push through. He likely died with TB instead of dying from TB, similarly to how someone dies with AIDS because it weakens them so that a simple cold or a minor cut is lethal, as a opposed to dying from AIDS which implies that AIDS killed them directly. Anyway, I loved the video-I really enjoy discussions about how plausible things in entertainment media are, despite some people going "it's just a movie, it doesn't have to be realistic." Recognising whether something is or isn't realistic does not detract from my enjoyment of the media if it is made with care and internal consistency, it's just fun to compare with reality.

He was an orphan adopted by a gang, turned outlaw after failing to be a rancher, (cowpoke) and one of the gang members turned rat and guess for who? THE PINKERTON DETECTIVE AGENCY! Look it up, it will blow your mind, his story also takes place in Texas which is close to where the rdr2 story is, you can see cities like “Amarillo” and “new Austin” on the map. Sam bass died in round rock, a town about 30 minutes maybe less outside of Austin Texas… it’ll blow your mind, I’m telling you. Anyone who’s a red dead 2 fan, check out the story of Sam bass here on KZbin
