New Expanse Reactor? LET'S GO!!! FYI: 'Sasa' means know/understand in Belter, 'ke' at the end of a sentence forms a question e.g. 'sasa ke' means 'do you understand?' and 'mi sasa' means I understand. 'XO' is a term for Executive Officer. :) Some no-spoiler info that might help you understand the world below. The United Nations of Earth & Luna and The Congressional Republic of Mars are 'Inner Planets' and have set up stations through the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter to mine the Belt and the Outer Planets beyond it. It takes weeks to months to traverse the system. It is worth it as there are tremendous resources to be gained, however, the wealth is not shared equally and the people who live on those stations (Belters) live in poor conditions (e.g. rationed air and water) with diminished rights. Over a century the Belter's bodies have changed from living in low gravity and they have developed their own hybrid language and culture. A group called the Outer Planets Alliance (OPA) has formed to fight for Belter rights/sovereignty but the Belter are a diaspora with many factions, so the OPA has divided political and milititant agendas. Inner Planets generally see OPA as a terrorist organisation. The show is largely a retelling of European Colonialism on Earth except the ocean is space and the tall ships are have rockets. The Cantebury was hauling ice to Ceres station to provide water for the people there so it exploding is pretty bad news, not just because of the deaths. With regards to the rockets, gravity is generally created on the ships through Thrust Gravity. The ships are like buildings with floor running along the width, not the length of the ship so the rockets are below you. They then accelerate (usually at 1/3 Earth's gravity) constantly to maintain the push into the soles of your feet. when they get halfway, they cut the engines then 'flip and burn', which is essentially a 180 degree spin and then flying backwards using their thrusters to decelerate at 1/3 G for the 2nd half of the ship. This means that the direction of the rockets (drives as they call them) don't actually tell you which direction the ship is headed in. If two ships are headed in the same direction with drives facing opposite ways, one will will fly past the other but its more like 2 cars on the highway where one is braking and the other is flooring it. When they turn off their drives, they lose gravity and use magnetic boots(magboots). Hope that made sense! Enjoy!

The original concept for The Expanse was for an MMPRPG, but after doing immense and impeccable research the co-authors, Ty Frank and Daniel Abraham, realized that wasn't going to happen due to funding, so they turned it into a tabletop RPG. After playing the tabletop game with friends, including George R.R. Martin, (Ty Frank was his assistant), they had a cool storyline and characters, so they turned it into a novel series, (9 novels, 7 novellas, and 2 short stories.) The novel series was so popular it was made into a TV series, which was so popular it was made into the Telltale RPG you are playing, bringing itfull circle back to original concept. (The game, btw, takes place before the events in the books/show.) "Sa-Sa" - "to know." There are variations of this, such as "Sabe" ("you know") and "Sabez" ("I know"). The bird looks odd because it is flying in 1/3 gravity of Earth. Detective Josephus Aloisus Miller was born and raised on Ceres Station, but wears an Earther hat to be more like Earthers... less Belter. Therefore other Belters hassle him about it, calling him "wellwalla" ie "well lover," meaning the gravity wells of Earth and Mars. He says he wears the hat to, "Keep the rain off my head," but there's no rain in space.

Welcome to The Expanse! This story began as a role-playing game (guess the roles later). Then it became a hit novel series, and finally this excellent television series. The creators of the game and novel are also on the screenwriting team, so it follows the novels closely. Like a novel, it lays out the story carefully and in detail. But it demands an intelligent audience. There is no fluff, no filler. Everything said, everything shown is important to the study. Even voices in the background and information on computer screens is important. It will pose to you a lot of questions, but it will also give you the answers...if you're paying attention. (Sometimes it gives you the answers before it poses the questions). But you will find this to be time well spent. Except for one question...one question they don't answer.

It is wonderful to see a new reactor to The Expanse. I think you will enjoy it. Don't worry about not picking everything up - you're not supposed to and you don't need to. A large amount of the show, at the beginning certainly, is from characters' points of view, so we rarely know much more than they do as they slowly uncover new information. It's a little more naturalistic this way. We don't understand the Belter Creole or culture much at first - the same as Havelock, the (Earther) rookie cop/security partner to Joe Miller. Trust in the writers to build up your understanding by gradual immersion. They will lay a trail of breadcrumbs for you and by the time you really need to know or understand something you will. There will be twists and turns too, but that's all part of the fun. Enjoy!

The vibe Miller is giving, that you mentioned he is "hiding something," is mostly from being a Belter, but working for an Earth security company. The Earth corporations and the Earth government (The U.N.) operate in the Belt in a manner that exploits the Belt's resources and oppresses the Belters. Miller is a Belter working for Earth; he is a pariah to his own people. He is uncomfortable among them (though his occupation as a cop gives him power over them). Havelock asks, "What's with the hat?" Miller answers, "Keeps the rain off my head." But, there is no rain in space. Only on Earth. Miller's sarcastic. But, then why would he wear a hat? To your point, what is he hiding? Whether Miller is hiding something else, beyond his regret for his life choices... well, who knows?

@@andiecphSo, here’s the thing about reacting to The Expanse. It doesn’t often stop to tell you about the world-building. They expect you to pay attention, notice things, ask questions, and formulate answers. As well, each character has prejudices and no one sees the entire big picture. There will be no Oracle to explain everything. Even the Deputy UN Undersecretary (aka Torture Grandma), the head of Intelligence for all of Earth, doesn’t have the whole picture. So, sometimes the characters say unreliable things. You, the viewer, must discern the truth. Who is lying? Who is mistaken? Are they all making the right decisions but coming to different conclusions? And all the while, the plot is moving forward. And by the time you figure out (or the story actually shows you) the answer to a big question, another question is raised. The show will keep your brain active, in every single episode. All of the above can make it hard for reactors to comment during scenes without missing critical information. But we watch reactions to hear your thoughts. It’s quite a conundrum. So, have fun walking that tightrope!

As you've seen in this episode, there is a large settlement of humans on, or better said, inside Ceres. which is a very large asteroid, maybe even a mini-planet, in the asteroid belt. It was hollowed out and then spun artificially to create spin gravity for those who dwell inside. We are not informed as to who footed the bill for all that construction work. My guess is that mining corporations obtained large loans from banks on Earth to fund the projects. It is expensive to live in outer space. Those loans all have to be repaid. The corporation obliged to repay them will apply their mining revenue first to the loans, then to their shareholders. The Belters view that as exploitation. It is analagous to current political battles where workers are demanding a "living wage", and a manifestation of the age-old struggle between capital and labor.

Although this is never stated explicitly, I would guess that the birds on Ceres (however many there are, and there probably aren't many) have probably been pretty well domesticated, since they're really living outside of their natural ecosystem. Their survival likely depends largely on getting food and water from friendly humans, so they have adapted to lose some of their natural fear of people. Kind of like pigeons in urban areas on Earth. That's my theory, anyway.

No hyperspace in this show. Ships accelerate towards their target and then, halfway there, "flip and burn," using their thrust to decelerate. Never seen your channel before, but you're reacting to "The Expanse" so I am now here. :) This is one of the best shows ever, a very interesting and intelligent show, filled with amazing ideas and incredible characters. I am jealous of you honestly, just starting out on your journey with this show! You are in for one hell of a ride! Just a little bit of info for you on the universe of this show: Belters are the people who live and work in the asteroid belt and outer planets of our solar system(mostly on the many moons of Jupiter and Saturn). They spend most of their lives in zero-gravity, which means their bones and hearts are very weak compared to those of us who live on Earth. On Earth, our bones have to be strong enough to hold us up, and our hearts have to be strong enough to pump blood from the bottom of our feet to the top of our heads against the force of gravity. In zero-G, your body doesn't have to work nearly as hard to do those things, so it results in your body being much weaker. This is why Avasarala(the politician lady with the husky voice) could torture a Belter by just hanging him from his armpits. Earth's gravity is extremely painful for him. Also, Belters have been treated like shit by the people of Earth and Mars for centuries. The Belt is basically the third-world nation of the solar system. Belters are often poor and have to do dangerous, thankless jobs for very little pay which the "Inners" (aka people of the inner planets, Earth and Mars) benefit from the most. So there is a lot of social and economical injustice in this world. I hope you keep going with this show! You will not regret it! It's going to be an incredible and mind-blowing journey!

There are actually 3 major powers in the solar system of the Expanse: Earth, Mars, and The Belt. Mars is currently devoted to a terraforming project that will still take decades, if not more than a century, to complete. The Belt, as in the asteroid belt, is full of people who were only able to afford more healthcare during their childhood development, and gets a lot of work done to keep the solar system running (mining or gathering resources, processing materials, etc). The Belt is home to an organization called the OPA, or Outer Planet Alliance (technically, anyone from beyond the belt is lumped in with the Belters). The OPA has been responsible for terrorist acts in the past--as well as labor stoppages and strikes--so Earth and Mars don't have a high opinion of the group. But the OPA is also the closest thing to any kind of government body the belt has, loose as it is. Depending on where in the belt you live, the OPA can be your greatest ally or worst enemy. Then there's Earth. Earth in the next three centuries isn't really a whole lot different than now. Sure, the basic level of technology is higher, but the polar ice caps have almost completely melted and water levels have risen (there's a shot of the Statue of Liberty being artificially kept dry). The world is united under one government, headed by the UN. There's a basic income for all legal residents (and illegal residents have to scrape by or break the laws that don't even recognize them just to survive), but it's barely enough to keep a roof over most peoples' heads. There's also still a wealth of resources on Earth, which both Mars and the Belt see as an unearned gift that the people of Earth barely appreciates. let alone deserves. In short, things are very complicated between Earth, Mars, and the Belt, with an uneasy peace having risen and every group looking for just the right excuse to spark a war. On Earth, people are either unbelieveably poor, or living off of the residuals of inherited wealth of the past few centuries (which can range between being barely enough to keep you and yours provided for, or more wealth and luxury that you can dream of, today). The term "X-O" is short for "Executive Officer," basically the member of crew in charge of making sure everyone does their jobs, and keeps the people of the ship operating properly, so the ship can run smoothly. Holden doesn't want the job because of the amount of responsibility and paperwork (electronic paperwork) it requires. He was happy as the previous X-O's second, because there usually wasn't much for him to do on a ship the size of the *Canterbury*. Now he has actual work to do.

This is all very kind and enthusiastic, but most of this info will be presented in the show as it unfolds. Sure, answer the question about what is an X-O, but perhaps consider leaving out the huge and unnecessary information dump. There is a beauty in the gradual, mostly show-don't-tell, storytelling and you are denying Andie the joy of experiencing that. I know that you mean well, but think first. The poor lady has been hit with an Encyclopedia Britannica in the comments already and she's only on Ep1.

If you want to be less confused, definitely check out some videos on the solar system, like Crash Course Astronomy. But the Asteroid belt is mostly between Mars and Jupiter, so it's farther than Mars. (Eros is an exception, it's a near-earth asteroid). Ceres, where the detective is, is a dwarf planet (like Pluto), in the asteroid belt, it's the largest asteroid by far, and has similar gravity to Earth's moon. In The Expanse, it's been turned into a giant rotating space station.

Plus even with that many rewatches, the show is so detail-rich that theres always something to discover new, though watching it for the first time is just something special with all the twist and turns + the top-notch cliffhangers

This show is renowned for its attention to detail and being highly faithful to real physics. The "gravity" on the ships comes from being under constant thrust (meaning constant acceleration and ever increasing speed). This means that they need to flip over half way to their destination and decelerate the rest of the way so they can slow down enough to match speeds with their destination. Likewise when changing course they needed to "flip and burn" to quickly change their direction and speed to create an intercept course with the other vessel. This required increasing the acceleration so it was a "high g" maneuver. The liquid injected helps their bodies withstand the strain of the increased weight.

Just adding another welcome to the chorus. You'll find a welcoming and enthusiastic fan base here who are generally pretty good about avoiding spoilers. The worst you'll get will probably be someone who says something like "if you like what happened to ____ in this episode, just wait until season 3!" Or, you know, stuff like that. Most spoilers you'll hear from Expanse fans will be mild and may not even bother you that much (some people are stricter about that stuff than others). They usually come from a place of excitement and love for the material... and sometimes enthusiasm can go a little too far. What everyone says about paying attention is true, though I think sometimes people say it in such a way that makes it sound intimidating when it really doesn't have to be. It is true that this is not a show to watch while texting on your phone or even folding your laundry, but since you're watching it on camera, it's already pretty much a given that you won't be doing that. Another thing that happens sometimes with new reactors is that they end up talking over important information and then all the fans will yell at you in the comments 😏.... just remember that people are just enthusiastic and want you to love the show as much as they do, especially their favorite lines or plot points. So when they see you talk over a moment they've been anticipating, they get frustrated. But also, a lot of people, despite having watched tons of reactions (you are probably the 15th or 20th person I've watched this show "with"), don't seem to appreciate the fact that most reactors watch episodes two or three times; once initially, and at least one more time during editing. So usually the stuff people get upset about has already been addressed. Doesn't stop people from admonishing you about it though. Like I said, don't let that kind of thing get to you -- it's just passion for this show run a little bit amok. And honestly, it doesn't happen that often, but if and when it does, just ignore it. You'll do fine. Finally, you asked about "sasa," or, I think the captions have spelled it "sa sa" and sometimes "sa-sa." "Sasa" is the Belter language word for "to know." So when the guy who calls Miller "welwala" says "when the blood is on the wall, sasa ke which side you're on," he's asking him if he'll know which side he's on when the Belters rise up against the Earth people who run Ceres. Similar, Holden asks Naomi (don't worry, you'll get the names soon enough) if she knows where the XO is and she says "no sasa," she's saying she doesn't know (though, because this is the first first episode, she didn't pronounce it correctly; she said it as two sentences -- "No. Sasa." -- when it really should have been one). The thing about the Belter language (or creole, as it is properly called) is that you'll pick it up in no time, at least a good part of it. They never subtitle or caption it because they deliberately want it to feel foreign. But you'll get there, don't you worry. And if you really want, there are online dictionaries, a memrise course, people running classes at cons, even an entire subreddit devoted to "Lang Belta," the Belter Creole language. It has many passionate fans, just like Klingon. 😆 Last thing: Some people will tell you the show doesn't get good until Episode 4 (because of all the world building). Some say not until Season 2. Others loved it from the start and don't get what all that's about (that's me, mostly). And there's a small minority who think the show sucks and don't get what all the hoopla is about. But i already can tell you're not going to be in that last category. So all I can say is, stick with it, and feel free to ask all the questions you want -- people here will answer probably way more extensively than you expected (or maybe even wanted, LOL). Enjoy!

@tonycamas9747
@tonycamas9747 5 ай бұрын
@@y00t00b3r Yeah, I hear that, but I think sometimes we (and I include myself in this) lose sight of the point of reaction videos, which is to have reactors, you know, *react*. And sometimes those reactions involve things said out loud. It would be pretty dull if all reactors ever did was make a series of faces. And since they haven't seen the show, they can't always predict when someone on screen is going to start talking. They just can't always know. So sometimes they step on the line you think is important. It's unfortunate timing, I guess, but I don't think it's intentional, or reflective of a lack of interest in the material or a chronically short attention span. Sometimes, it just happens. I think over the course of a few seasons of the show, most reactors begin to develop a little bit of a sense of the show's rhythms and are thus less likely to trample on important dialog. But I feel like I've seen some commenters get way more exasperated than they really should be over that sort of thing. Shit, as we are often reminded, happens. And, repeating my point from above, while it's disappointing to not see a reaction to whatever it was we were waiting for, usually the reactor didn't miss it, because they watched the whole thing, or at least the critical scenes, a second time (and probably, in some cases, a third or even fourth time) while editing. I guess I'm just saying we, collectively, can be a pretty tough room sometimes, and it's a shame, because I know for a fact that Expanse fans are hands down the coolest people on Earth. And on Mars and in the Belt, too. 😀

@@tonycamas9747 A reactor doesn't have to have their mouth taped shut like a kidnapping victim, true. But some are an absolute motor mouth! There's an international maritime law that currently exists (that the show presumes will carry over into the future in space) that if you detect a ship in distress, you can be held liable if you don't offer assistance / the country the distressed ship is registered with can pursue legal action against you. The Captain here is clearly not getting paid enough to care and is hoping nothing comes of it so he can get the ship back to Ceres on time to get paid a bonus for the ice.

New Expanse Reactor, Yay! Welcome. To add to what others have said, the show is very dense, but you're not expected to catch everything the first time through. None of us did. There will be strategically placed conversations between characters where they try to figure out what is going on (S1 unfolds like a mystery). That exposition will help you catch up with the plot. The other tip is to use subtitles if you can; besides the strangeness of the Belter creole, the sound mix in S1 is a little wonky, so subtitles help a bunch. Mostly importantly, relax and enjoy one of the best sci-fi series ever made.

First of all, welcome to the Expanse and the fantastic journey that you have already started. Next, even though I have read some other comments to this effect, read ALL the computer screens, ship patches and other back ground art work. Also be aware that this shows loves to give you seemingly disparate pieces of information that later come together into one story line. Some reactors have trouble with understanding the outlier plots and how they effect the other parts of the plot, rather than waiting and seeing how they get bought into the overall plot later down the way. Miller [The Detective] wears the hat for his own reason that will be revealed in good time, however he does not talk about this. So, people make assumptions about why he wears it. Hats are useless in space as there is not any weather on stations and you need a helmet in vacuum so, most people see it as a fashion. They see a Belter wearing an item of Earth apparel and assume snobbery or a desire to be an Earther. Considering the context of abuse between Earther's and Belter's this is quite controversial. Enjoy and thanks for your reaction.

Miller was a 'ward of the station' - he was born on Ceres. Belters are born in space, or on small stations, so they never experience the gravity of Earth, or the slightly reduced gravity of Mars. That's why they're so tall, and they have health issues like Miller's spine. Gravity is extremely important in The Expanse!

Your introduction to The Expanse is very much a "sink-or-swim" experience. Not much is explained to you. The nature of the settings are shown to you, instead, and you have to log them and put the pieces together yourself. It helps a lot if you have read a lot of classis sci-fi books from the mid-20th century when authors tended to write stories based within our solar system and in the near future rather than interstellar in scope in a galaxy far, far away millenia into the future. People weaned on Star Wars or Star Trek when in comes to sci-fi entertainment will have the biggest learnng curve. It's been a while since viewers were served up a sci-fi series utilizing tech which is basically what we have today in the year 2023. I found the difference to be refreshing and the attention to science to be a wonderful part of the show. It also helps if you take some time to identify the places mentioned in the story. Some of the larger asteroids. The moons of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. They are real places within our solar system. Space is enormous. These places are far apart from each other. Season 1 is best described as detctive noir mystery set in space. Some viewers expecting space opera action lose interest. If you are an action junky, try to enjoy the unfolding mysteries until you get to s1.e4, where you will finally get the action you crave. I just turned 73. I've been watching TV since about 1958. Sci-fi is my favorite genre. With those disclosures having been stated, IMHO The Expanse is the greatest TV series of all time, any genre. You will eventually come around to agree with my opinion.

Sasa, is a filler word in Belter.... it basically means 'you know'. Belter is a creole language mixing bits of all of earth's major languages. There are three 'factions' in the Expanse. Earth and Mars, and they both use and exploit the resources and labour of the Belters. Miller the detective is a Belter. XO is short for Executive officer, basically second in command to the captain. The fluid on the Cant is the 'juice' It is.a cocktail of drugs to keep people awake and from having a stroke during High-G manouvers . Don't feel bad about feeling abit lost, you are meant to. This show doesn't spoon feed the viewers, or have any empty filler. Even stuff in the background is their for a purpose. For expample when the Captian is talking to Holden about earth and Mars, on the screen behind there was a picture of Avarsarala (The Indian woman on Earth) and labelled her Deputy Security to the United Nations. Or her grandkid throwing a water balloon, meanwhile in the Belt, water is more precious than water. This show gives you plenty of questions early, but it delivers answers as the threads of the stories come together. Welcome to the Expanse.

A lot of people have commented on the bird. At this point in the story, it's just establishing that Ceres is rotating at a rate to simulate gravity, but not at a full G (IMHO). The treatment of gravity, acceleration, and vacuum in space is very thoughtfully done. You are so very lucky with so much amazing entertainment before you. Big yoo-hoo from Minneapolis! ❄️🌲🌞🌲❄️ SUBSCRIBED Sa-sa is the verb "to know" in Belter Creole, probably based on "saber" in Portuguese and Spanish. So "Mi sa-sa" is "I know." The producers employed a linguist for the series. Wikipedia calls Belter "a creole based on English, with influence of other languages from all around the world, including Romance languages such as Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian, Germanic languages such as German, Dutch and Swedish, Slavic languages such as Polish, Russian and Ukrainian, as well as Japanese, Chinese, Persian, Arabic, Hebrew, Zulu and others." As a polylingual person I'm sure you'll pick it up quickly. 😊

what an amazing coment ^^ thank you so much and yes I have picked up a few languages from the creole words and their sounds, so far I have picked up portuguese, scandinavian and french and it works very well. I'm only on episode two but it's amazing from the first one :D I hope you'll enjoy the reactions!

Good choice of a series to watch. Should get you lots of new fans. The series is based on a book series called "The Expanse". The authors of the books are heavily involved in the tv series so some really excellent writing in the show. This is one of the most accurate sci fi shows you'll find. There's no magic artificial gravity, there's no faster than light engines. Hence the magnetic boots you noticed before. I can't place your English accent. So out of curiosity where are you from?

I see you play games too. Can you PLEASE play some Kerbal Space Program too! This would go so well with this series! It’s a game about building and launching rockets into orbit and to other planets. It uses really good physics and will teach you A TON about how and why the ships both in KSP and in The Expanse actually maneuver in realistic ways! Plus you’d be the person I’ve seen to do both of these!

Sa-sa is Belter for "to know". Think Latin roots of Romance languages - Yo se. Mi sa-sa.
